Pregnant and low carb???

Hi guys, i am new here and have a question. Last year i lost a ton of weight on atkins and felt great, then blew it at the holidays and have been struggling ever since. Well i am now seeking support to get back on the wagon. I am hoping to become pregnant by the end of the year and was wondering if anyone maintained a lowcarb lifestyle while pregnant and how the experience was? Low carb magazines say its fine while pregnant (but they are a little biased) so i thought i would pick your brains!!!!

Hello and welcome !!

I can so relate to the holiday sabotage :(

Everyone is different so what I would do is check with your doctor first. You can't believe everything you read.

I don't know anyone who has maintained a lc diet while pregnant unless they had some medical reasons.

IMHO, babies need all the nutrients they can get, if I were to get pregnant again I would not be on any sort of restricted diet unless the doctor called for it. To me, a healthy baby is worth the weight I gain. I would eat a diet full of fruits, veggies, healthy whole grains, lean meats and stay away from the junk. Taking a prenatal vitamin is soooo important as well. But thats just MY opinion. Remember most of all, folic acid is SOOOOOO important to take even before you get pregnant as well as during your pregnancy.

HUGS TO YOU !!!!!!!

Welcome!!! :balloons:

I agree with Leenie!! If you want to lc while your pregnant, I would only stay away from the "white" foods. White flour, sugar, pasta etc. Since your a pasta lover  go with the whole wheat instead. But I wouldnt restrict the fruits and veggies while pregnant regardless as to their carb content. Stay away from the empty calories, like juice, and have an apple instead.

I hope to see you around more, join us on the daily (weekly) :)

One nutrient that is really important before and during the beginning of pregnancy is folic acid, and that is one of the B vitamins mostly found in grains. I would make sure that you start (now!), if you aren't already, taking a daily supplement that contains at least 100% of the RDA, and try to identify some whole grains you can eat that are high in folic acid.

Thanks for all your advice! Yeah i have been taking prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid for about 3 months or so now.

Thats great Pastalover, I'm glad to hear that. Its amazing what folic acid can prevent and the beauty is, its so easy and simple to take. I would also stay away from diet soda...that stuff IMHO is not good for babies/kids (or adults really). I love the stuff but when I was pregnant I wanted a healthy baby in the worst way. I gave it up right b/4 and during my pregnancy. Reading what that stuff "can" do, especially to kids who are developing is pretty scary.

My advice would just eat healthy and natural, staying way from as much chemical laced foods as possible.
