Starting Again..any tips for me?

Hi everyone,

I was on the Atkins diet and lost about 65 pounds.. I've been off for a long time and gained 10 pounds back.

I've decided to go back on it because I remember how I felt like I was in control of what I was eating when I was following Atkins. Also, I'd really like to lose the remainder of my weight (around 30 pounds).

Its been awhile so if anyone has any tips for me, I'd be really happy to hear them!

Thanks!

Hi Lamby, welcome! My advice is to do a completely clean induction meaning only eat whole natural foods with no sugars (even artificial ones) I have been doing this since june 17th 05, I started very clean then I added bars and shakes in and started having cravings again although I still lost/am losing weight the purpose of induction is to break sugar cravings so as hard as it has been I have eliminated them and I am starting to feel detoxed and great again. If you dont have the book you need to get it "Dr.Atkins New Diet Revolution" its updated from the original one. Watch your sodium intake and products containg nitrates they may make you retain water, Drink tons of water throughout the day and to avoid sugar spikes spread your carbs through the day dont use all your carbs for one meal etc... I am still new at this but you will find great support here and people who are veterans to this Way Of Eating will guide you through your success! hth and best wishes for your health!

I agree with what Mom2... suggested. Since you've done Atkins before and only have 30 pounds to lose, I suggest doing 2 to 4 weeks of induction (by the book, of course). Then begin doing OWL so you can see how introducing new foods impact your weightloss and cravings.

Also, remember that since you are 55 pounds lighter than you were when you did Atkins before, you will not be able to eat as many calories as you did then because your BMR is lower. Since you are starting at a lower weight, you also probably will have a lower initial weight loss. Assuming you lose 10% of what you need to lose during the first couple of weeks, that will be 3 pounds, where as before that 10% was 8.5 pounds. Don't let that discourage you -- it's all relative.

The first 2/3 of one's weight comes off much faster than the last 1/3. It took me 11 months to lose 45 pounds; I expect it will take that long to lose the last 20.

Lastly, remember that Dr. Atkins said that if you aren't exercising, you aren't doing his program. Make sure you are doing both cardio -- to burn fat, and resistance/strength training -- to build muscle.

Good luck!
