Of all the stupid things!

I found this on CNN the other day. Can you believe it?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Coca-Cola Co. said Monday it will launch a soft-drink with half the carbohydrates of traditional colas this summer as the world's largest soft-drink firm looks to capitalize on the low-carb diet craze.

"Consumers are the true architects of this idea," said Coke's (KO: Research, Estimates) CEO Doug Daft in a statement. "Coca-Cola C2 was created to specifically address their desire for a lower-calorie cola."

A Coca-Cola spokesman would not give specific dates for the roll-out of the new drink, but told Reuters it would appear in stores across the United States before the planned late summer launch of Pepsi Edge, PepsiCo Inc.'s (PEP: Research, Estimates) low calorie cola.

The Atlanta-based company said it will release Coca-Cola C2 first in Japan and then in the United States.

Industry newsletter Beverage Digest, which was first to report the roll-out of Coca-Cola C2 Monday, said the drink would make its U.S. debut on June 16. Coca-Cola C2 will arrive at a time when Coca-Cola is working feverishly to revitalize sluggish soft drink sales in North America, the largest and most important market for Coca-Cola and its nearest rival PepsiCo.

Over the past few years, Coca-Cola has broadened the scope of its flagship product with Vanilla Coke, Diet Coke with Lemon and Diet Coke with Lime.

It's also made a push into the non-carbonated sector with products like Dasani water, Minute Maid fruit juices and Powerade sports drinks.

HELLO!!! Do these nuts forget that Diet Coke is carb-free? Why go to a "mid-carb" drink?

StorybookMama 04-21-2004 12:16 PM

Hello? Did you forget it is all about how much money they can separate consumers from?

They couldn't care less about a low-carb cola - it is just one more product to sell and make money on. Yes, Diet Coke is carb-free - but it has been around for ages. This will be "new" and new products sell.

I'll keep drinking my Diet Rite and my Diet Coke, thank you very much.

StarPrincess 04-21-2004 12:29 PM

But half the carbs is still about 13 grams of carbs for a soda. That's insane! I really don't think it will sell. It just seems so stupid!

Hoot 04-21-2004 12:29 PM

I saw that, too, and thought the same thing. But I guess one good thing about it is that Diet Coke, like a lot of other diet drinks, has that aspartame stuff that Atkins discourages (supposedly inhibits weight loss, and such). Hopefully, this low carb coke will contain a sweetener that will allow Coke fans to stay on Atkins w/o repercussions.

Personally, I don't drink Diet Coke b/c I don't like the aftertaste--I stick with Diet Mountain Dew--but I'll give C2 a try.

Hoot 04-21-2004 12:30 PM

Oh, scratch that last comment of mine. I didn't see the part about HALF the carbs. I just ASSUMED that it would be carb-free. 13 carbs? Blech. Back to Diet Dew.

Leenie 04-21-2004 01:02 PM

It's very ingenious from a business end, wish I was THAT stupid (I'd be RICH). This is good for folks that are not on atkins/south beach/etc.. and are just watching carbs but can't stand the taste of diet soda's. For them this would be good but what are they going to sweeten it with I wonder and is it going to taste funky.

Star......business' will do anything to rape the public, you should be used to this kind of stuff, I know I am, I'm actually growing numb from all the nonsense ;)

I'm glad the FDA is going to start soon to regulate the label of "low carb," I think they said if its not 25% or below manufactures can not claim its low carb, so I thought I read.

marie. 04-21-2004 01:26 PM

I wont buy it...Im not that dumb. However, when low carb water comes out....I'm all over it

Leenie 04-21-2004 01:38 PM

Marie, how would you like to go into business w/me :s:

RobinW 04-21-2004 02:03 PM

My 1st thought was OMG how many carbs were in the diet vanilla coke I just drank...then I checked the label.....my 2nd thought was....do they think we're stupid???????? I guess so.....Im so glad to be in such a smart group of chickies!! :dizzy:

marie. 04-21-2004 02:16 PM

goddessholly 04-21-2004 03:52 PM

Yeah it is stupid, but it's so typical.
It's all about the money...and some people will be dumb enough to buy it.

jdoggmartin 04-21-2004 04:20 PM

LOL, Marie.

I heard about this, and I thought it was ridiculous, too. It's just setting people up to fail. Uniformed people see things with a "low-carb" label and think it's OK to eat. Then, they assume low-carb diets or Atkins don't work. I'm glad we're all so smart! :D

StarPrincess 04-21-2004 04:41 PM

I wish the FDA would hurry up! By their rules, under 7 carbs is low carb and higher than that but at least 1/3 less carbs than "normal" will be reduced carb. And sugar alcohols count (hopefully!) :D

lady_adnerb 04-21-2004 05:06 PM

Well, what do you expect from someone that says "looks to capitalize on the low-carb diet craze"?? And what's with the "craze" word? jeez!!

jane8760 04-22-2004 10:41 AM

But wait! There's more!

Marie: How do I order some?

Leenie 04-22-2004 04:05 PM

Jane, send cash to the Leenie & Marie Fund (sounds like donny & marie haaaaaaaaaa) :D

StorybookMama 04-22-2004 04:45 PM

Or, you could call is Carb-Free Liquid Dihydrogen Monoxide... Sounds so pretentious!!!

RavenL33 04-22-2004 08:04 PM

Brenda, there's two types of low-carbers in the marketplace: Genuine WOLers like you and I (and the peeps on this board!) then there are the *fad dieters* - the people who jump onto Atkins, South Beach etc because they heard it's a quick fix...this second market is the one Coca-Cola is aiming for with their C2 product. People that don't have a clue, couldn't be bothered reading the book, and are suckers for anything labelled "low-carb", regardless of what the nutritional panel says.

/end rant
:D

Boy, nice stereotyping there, huh?

lady_adnerb 04-22-2004 10:29 PM

Well, God willing I'll be on this "craze" for the rest of my life. Unless there's a medical necessity (or I can't make my own food anymore) that I have to eat carbs I see no reason this WOE can't be a lifetime commitment.
*and this is where we all say "I do" and "if anyone objects..shut your :censored: mouth!"*

Mrs H 04-22-2004 11:19 PM

I do......I really hope to be on this the rest of my life. I see no reason why that can't happen!!!!

Lisa

Froufy 04-23-2004 12:22 AM

Don't people realize it's a "no sugar" thing??? Not just low carb...jeez how pathetic - Next thing you know they'll be advertising low carb Krispy Kreme donuts...only half the sugar and carbs.

We need a "promotional offer" - free atkins book with every dozen - READ IT!:):)

Froufy:)

RavenL33 04-23-2004 02:43 AM

Oh, sugarfree Krispy Kremes...I WISH!!!!

*waits patiently*

StarPrincess 04-23-2004 10:41 AM

Wish granted, Raven, they're gonna be doing it. I'll find the article in a few.

Silly me! It's on the 3FC main page :)

lady_adnerb 04-23-2004 02:03 PM

Well, they're probably rephrasing from when they called it the "meat and cheese" diet. Doubt they'll ever get it right.

GreenEyedLady 04-29-2004 10:08 PM

Yeah, I read that too. I thought the same thing....diet coke has no carbs so why would I buy a can of coke with 13 nasty ones? Talk about preying on the desperate. It's really an insult to your intelligence. How stupid does coke think the American public is? Apparently, they think we're VERY stupid. Nice!

Amyjo01 04-29-2004 10:27 PM

Nothing personal but the American public is pretty stupid.....

RavenL33 04-29-2004 10:31 PM

As the token Aussie, I'd have to agree there...nothing personal against any of you wonderful chicas, but the general opinion out here in the "rest of the world" is that the American public is (collectively) dumb as a box of hammers.

Again, I repeat, nothing personal. Y'all rock :)

StarPrincess 04-30-2004 10:56 AM

Of course, I know my share of not-so-bright people, but note that they're launching it first in Japan! So maybe we dumb Americans will be spared the insult of having them try to market it to us.

RavenL33 05-01-2004 04:04 AM

*shrugs*
The Japanese seem to react to fads more rapidly than any other market in the world, especially the youth market.

lady_adnerb 05-01-2004 09:01 AM

Does that mean we're "slow" to react also? Jeez, they already say that Japan is smarter than us. Or does that just mean we're pickier about our products??

Amyjo01 05-01-2004 02:45 PM

Maybe I should rephrase what I said.... From what I have seen in my life time sometimes the people I have dealt with have been easily lead or mis-lead. The whole low-carb phenomena is an example, for those who are un-educated (and are unaware that they are uneducated) it is easy to influence them into buy things they think are better for them. Not talking about fad purchasing or such but think about the rage "low-fat" had/has promoted. When a great deal of low-fat products are no better for you than the regular versions.

I guess I should not of written "stupid" it should of been un-educated. But I do know some really stupid people, most of them frequent my emergency rooms on nights that I work.

StarPrincess 06-11-2004 01:41 PM

Well, it begins..........

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - McDonald's Corp., the No .1 fast-food chain that's been on a mission to its revamp its image, said it will offer Coca-Cola's new low-carb "C2" cola in a limited number of its restaurants.

Oak Brook- Ill.-based McDonald's (MCD: Research, Estimates), announced late Thursday that the company is sampling C2 in about 27 restaurants in five markets, including Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Orlando.

"We're responding again to what our consumers are telling us they want," Don Knauss, McDonald's chief operating officer of its North America division, said in a statement.

Added Knauss, "Today's consumers are looking for choices that fit their lifestyles. They want to keep enjoying the special cola taste that Coca-Cola delivers, but with the option of a lower-carb, lower-calorie soft drink. Coca-Cola C2 gives that freedom of choice."

McDonald's and other fast food chains have come under increasing attack from health and nutrition experts -- and have been the target of class-action lawsuits -- alleging their hamburgers and french fries are a major cause of obesity.

Coca-Cola's new low-carb "C2" cola debuted nationwide this week.
The company said it's sampling the new drink from Friday through Sunday at participating locations where customers will be offered either a free C2 with any purchase or a 12 ounce can of C2 with the purchase of a McDonald's extra value meal.

A limited number of restaurants will offer C2 as a fountain beverage beginning June 11.

McDonald's will decide whether or not to make C2 a permanent addition to its fountain beverage choices once it completes the test phase.

Coca-Cola (KO: Research, Estimates), the world's largest beverage company, launched C2 nationwide this week. According to Coke, the new cola has about half the carbohydrates, calories and sugar of regular cola.

dragnlady 06-12-2004 10:49 AM

lady_adnerb 06-13-2004 11:22 AM

My sister was commenting on this. She thought because mom and I are still on Atkins we'd just LOVE to know this. Mom looks at her and says "diet pepsi's ALWAYS been no carbs." I told her it was for people that wanted lowER carb but not diet.
