For me at least, exercise is critical. Even watching my calories, I have the metabolism of a slug. Over a year ago, myself and some other moms from School (Hi -L

) joined a local gym. Most weeks we go 4 times a week (we have coffee on the fifth day

). It really makes a difference, both to weight loss and how you feel about yourself. I spent the first year just on the treadmill, getting back in shape and adding time, incline & speed. This fall I've started doing the elliptical trainer. I'm up to 30 minutes (at low settings) and then I do another 20-30 on the treadmill.
I've been reading Dr. Phil's book and he recommends 5 hours of "intentional" exercise a week and another 2-3 hours of lifestyle exercising (gardening, cleaning, walk the dog kinda stuff). I really only get about 4 hours a week so I need to figure out a way to add some more in. My treadmill at home has given up the ghost so I need to replace it so I can get an hour or two in on the weekend when I'm not at the gym. *sigh* I definitely wish exercise were optional but I know it's not so I'm working hard to make it a habit.
BTW: I agree 100% that good sneakers are critical!! I have a pair of Ryka's and love them. They are designed specifically for women's feet - they are wide at the ball of the foot and narrow (compared to men's shoes) at the heel. I have to buy a bigger size (9 instead of 8) but they are a great fit and well worth the money.
