Two Weeks in Vegas and need HELP!

Hi All,
I have not posted much here, but I am coming up to a challenge that I really need some ideas about. I have to go to Las Vegas for 2 weeks for work. We are staying on the strip. I have a rental car, but no where to cook. I have been doing so well, I am afraid I will go off the deep end in that environment. I have lost 49 lb. since 1/2/06 and don't want to gain any back. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!:?: Thanks

I would advise that, unless you are 100% certain about your resolve and strength against temptation and portion-non-control, avoid the buffets like the plague. I'm not one to usually suggest people to run away from any challenge, to find a way to live through it instead, but you would have to be made of steel to survive those seductive horrors.

I looked up "Las Vegas Healthy Dining" in Google (My Best Friend tm) and came up with this address:

http://cityguide.aol.com/lasvegas/besthealthydining/

I don't endorse anything there, as I haven't eaten at any of the places listed, but it might be a start? There were some other promising-looking pages, you might want to replicate my search.

Otherwise, do you know if your accomodations will have a fridge? Even if you can't cook, you can eat pretty well- sandwiches, salads, fruit, veggies, cold drinks, etc. That might be a good option if you don't want to eat out for every meal. And, you can always search for the most "traditional" restaurants you can find and just order the way you would at home- search for the healthiest things on the menu and be prepared to not eat everything if the portions are too big.

Otherwise, if you are made of steel- most of the buffets I have been to offer plenty of healthy options. I just wish they were in a different building then the "others".

Good Luck! I hope you find some time for fun as well as business.

Most hotels in vegas have amazing gyms as well, especially the big ones on the strip. If you can't be as diligent about your calorie intake, maybe up your exercise to compensate? Who knows, 2 weeks might be enough to start you on a new exercise habit (or help you continue an old one!).

I think there are healthy options to be found almost everywhere...one doesn't have to go to a "All healthy" restaurant to eat decently healthy food. Just watch the portions, go for items which appear as healthy as possible on paper, and try to keep calories in mind. I've eaten at the Canyon Ranch in the venetian...its tasty, and reasonably portions of healthy food. Might be worth a visit or two in two weeks.

Also keep in mind that many Vegas hotels now have chain restaurants and/or fast food franchises that will have nutrition info online. Granted, fast food isn't the best option, especially for two weeks, but you will have access to the nutrition information you need to make the best choices you can. I know the Venetian has a food court with a lot of national chains...and I know of at least 2 Subways on the strip, so its possible.

Hope that helps!

Vegas

Congrats on your weight loss. Never been to Vegas but a few of my friends have. There should be lots of buffets from what my friends tell me. The one thing about buffets that most people forget is that they can be healthy if you pick the right choices. Usually they have roasted chicken and vegetables and salads. Most also have fruit you can eat for dessert instead of the higher calorie fares. And drink plenty of water before and during so you get full faster.

I did weight watchers and lost my weight before I had a baby and now I am still working on the last 10 or so lbs of baby weight. Everybody used to laugh when I was on WW because one of my favorite places to eat was the Golden Corral buffet, but I could always find something healthy there.

Good luck to you and have a great time!!!!;)

HI Teresa...I just got back about a few weeks ago from a weeks vacation in Vegas. We really enjoyed it and I actually lost 2 lbs while there. We ended up walking everywhere. Even when you drive the car somewhere the parking garage is still so far away...so we walked and walked and walked( the casinos are huge). I averaged over 17000 steps everyday. The other thing that I found was if I ate my oatmeal and fruit for breakfast (or other healthy stuff) then we really didn't eat much again til dinner so I think that my calories were pretty reasonable. We even ate at several buffets and I would look over my choices...decide what my splurge would be then eat everything else mostly healthy. Lastly...We had alot of FUN!....Good luck to you! and CoNGRATS! ON THE 49LBS GONE!! Blyn:D

I'm with andoreth, buffets are my nemesis! I think working out in the casino, bringing your own breakfast, and maybe aim for salads/sandwiches for as many meals as possible are excellent ideas. It's not going to be perfect, but remember you'll have a full 2 weeks there so none of your meals is the "last meal" (okay, that's kind of my own problem here, not saying it's yours). So enjoy yourself but like BlynC said do lots of walking! I am sure you will do fine if you are vigilant :D

What a GREAT group to take the time to help. You all have such great ideas and I know I will use some form of all.
1. If I buffet, plan what I will eat salad- vegtables- rosted chicken- fruit!
2. I will buy my breakfest at the grocery store - yoguart, oatmeal, fruit
3. I WILL walk alot.
4. Subway is a great idea!
Again Thanks to all who resonded!
