Bread, bread, bread!

  • I absolutely love it when I find low-calorie deli meats and cheeses and mayo and tuna to make very healthy sandwiches, but when I'm eating them through the week, the bread always does me in! What's the point, I wondered, of buying healthy meats and cheeses and mayo and tuna if the bread is doing the brunt of the damage?

Then I found some low calorie bread. 45 cals a slice. When it ran out, I found bread that was 40 calories per slice, AND had more slices in the bag! Woo hoo! Today, I found my best bread yet: Aunt Millie's Fiber for Life bread. At 35 calories and 3g of fiber per slice, I think I hit the jackpot! Now I can REALLY enjoy my sandwiches!

Is there something even better out there? I love my bread, and this is my favorite low-calorie find yet! :-D
  • Wow, I'm definitely going to look for that brand, sounds great! Did you find it at a regular store or a health food place?
  • I have just discovered that the Sahara pitas by Thomas' (the english muffin people). They make a white, wheat and whole grain pita. I love the whole grain one, and half a pita (enough for a sandwich) is 70 calories. Only 2 g of fiber though, making me doubt the "whole grain" claim a bit...

But I might try that Aunt Millie's bread next time!
  • So, does Aunt Millie's have any weight to it? I've tried a few low-carb breads and found they were so disappointly flimsy. It was like cotton candy. Looks like there's some substance, but melts in your mouth .

I like a bread with some heft to it, which is why switching to real "whole" wheat breads (not just a "wheat" bread) wasn't a big issue for me.

Lately, I've been using a whole wheat wrap (La Tortilla) which is pretty durn tasty. But I'd love to add a bread bread to my pantry. you think Aunt Millie's the one, then?
  • Where can I get this 35 cal bread! I am excited just thinking about it. I thought 50 was a miracle.
  • I've been using whole-wheat pita pockets lately, too. Mine (not sure what brand they are) have 140 calories, 4g fiber, 1.5g fat, and 6g protein. However, I did notice that they contain high fructose corn syrup, so I'd be glad to find a replacement! I have the whole-wheat La Tortilla tortillas (both large and small), but they sometimes have a funky texture to me--kinda chewy yet grainy...not really sure how to explain it.

So, is thia Aunt Millie's bread very expensive as compared to other breads? I hate that I can buy a huge loaf of regular white bread for like 89 cents, but trying to find a healthier bread can cost upwards of $3 for a smaller loaf
  • MMMMm....pitas. (Yes, that's all I had to say about that)
  • I'm allergic to bread, so I wrap my sandwich fillings in a large leaf of romaine lettuce -- that's only 2 calories. I do hamburgers that way too. Cuts way down on the calories.
  • Quote: I'm allergic to bread, so I wrap my sandwich fillings in a large leaf of romaine lettuce -- that's only 2 calories. I do hamburgers that way too. Cuts way down on the calories.
I did this when I was doing the South Beach diet a couple years ago. I REALLY liked doing fajitas this way--YUM! Nowadays, I don't use the lettuce fast enough and end up throwing at least half the head away all the time, so I don't bother anymore.
  • I used to use 45 calorie whole wheat bread. I got tired of it tasting like air. There is too much air in the bread to make it spread out more and they get to use half the amount for the same loaf (hence the low calories). Did that make sense?

I've switched back to 70 calorie whole wheat bread. There is more substance to it and just one slice for my sandwhich is enough.
  • low cal bread
Have you tried Butternut wheat light? It is really good bread, has the same texture as reg. bread and 40 calories per slice
  • Oh pitas are my new best friend!!! Those and Whole Wheat or Flax Seed Tortillas....I'm not really into bread so much. Thankfully! Now pasta on the other hand.... *sigh*
  • Wouldn't you know it? Got myself all psyched up for some good ol' Aunt Millie's, andmy store doesn't carry it. I'll have to check at a few other chains before I throw in the towel, but gee, what a disappointment!

I'll look for the Butternut, too. I know my local store carries that brand. Saw it there today.
  • Sorry I don't know their brand name, but I found some flavored wheat tortillas this week that I've really enjoyed using to make my sandwiches. One is garlic and herb and 50 cal for a (6in?) tortilla, the other rosemary and 100 cal for a (10in?) one.

I've been using garlic and herb whipped philly (1/2 serving: 30 cal) for the spread, turkey pastrami or ham, thinly sliced cheese, and then lots of veggies.

    Total for a sandwich: only 215 - 275 cal!
  • Yeah, this bread is very flimsy, but I don't mind it. I just got it at the grocery store... no special store involved.
