Veggie Burger
Wow!
So I just had my first veggie burger today with fresh spinach leaves, onion and lettuce. I have to say that I was really suprised by the flavor. I think I have found a new favorite food. :carrot: |
I love Boca Burgers (heck I love burgers! :dizzy: ) but the Boca is a great replacement. I just tried them a couple of months ago and was pleasantly surprised.
|
I found something even better than Boca. The brand name is Yves and they're called Veggie Cuisine and omg, they're so good. They're more firm than Boca, not mushy, and they taste like a real flame-broiled beef patty.
Blows Boca away. I think some varieties of Yves are frozen, but I get mine from the produce dept. |
Do you eat them in a bun? I've always been afraid to try veggie burgers (good grief, what the heck am I "afraid" of?). When you add a bun and ketchup or whatever condiment you like, do you lose the benefits of it being a veggie burger, as opposed to a beef burger?

I'm going to put in a pitch for Morningstar Farms burgers. I love the spicy black bean burgers, and last week just tried the tomato basil pizza burgers. They are more calories than Boca, but I love them! THese two don't specifically taste like hamburgers... they are something else entirely (and it's yummy). My DH tried the All AMerican Flame Grillers (or something like that) and those really did taste okay. We do them up in low cal buns with condiments...

Yves Veggie Cuisine is amazing! I use their veggie bacon, veggie sausages and ground round (ground beef substitute) They have a great website and you can do nutritional comparisons of the meat substitutes vs. actual meat and it is amazing the difference!

I'm going to agree with wyllen--I LOVE the MorningStar farms veggie burgers! Like she said, they are more calories than the Boca brand, but I think they taste leagues better and are a better texture.
Lena--you'll still have less fat with the veggie burger than the beef burger, plus you'll typically find more nutrients. I still eat them on buns, but I use whole-wheat hamburger buns (actually, I use whole-wheat potato rolls, which have 80 calories each). Then I just add some spinach and some Miracle Whip--YUM! |
MMmmm, I as well will vouch for the Morningstar burgers. I'll have them between wheat buns or wheat bread. I sometimes cook the burger then ground it up with a bit of salsa and fold it up between a piece of wheat bread. The taste of spice almost make me think of a taco.
I also buy the Morningstar sausage patties. I'll cook one up, grind it, and mix the ground sausage into my omelet every now and then. |
I've been a vegetarian for almost thirty years and I have tried many, many veggie burgers. My all time favorite so far are Amy's Texas Burgers. They have a slight barbecue flavor. Excellent! All of the Amy's frozen veggie burgers are delicious. Personally, I don't like Boca burgers but maybe that is because of the long term vegetarianism. While we are on the subject of fake meat, my favorite high protein, fat free diet snack is Yves Canadian Bacon (this is vegetarian). You can cook it or eat it cold like cold cuts, and they are 80 calories for three slices, no carbs, all protein, no fat. Delicious but pricey at 2.99 for 6 ounces.

Then sometimes I just eat them bunless. I'll cook it and put it on a plate with onions and just drizzle ketchup and mustard over top. Depends on my day and what I've eaten so far, I try and balance my breads and stuff. I don't like eating a whole lot of bread in one day. |

Do you prefer the veggie burgers that attempt to taste like "real" meat burgers or the ones that emphasize on the flavor of the veggies?
I think I like the ones that taste like veggies.... mmm.... eating one right now... lol |
The only time i had a veggie burger was at McDonald's a few years ago. My friend and i split one, just to try it and see how it was (not a good choice for a first time haha) It didn't have any flavour at all.
I'm glad this thread was started, now i have some ideas of what kind of veggie burgers would be good! I've always been afraid of them too, but people rave about them, so they must be good! |
I haven't had a bad veggie burger! I do remember my mom buying the nastiest tvp that came in a can and resembled dog food. :p
My favorite is the tomato basil burger, but I can't remember who makes it. :D |
I can remember trying a veggie burger about 3 years ago and it was the worst thing that I had ever tasted! The quality of "meat substitutes" has really gone up since then. I was glad I tried them again. :)
