What would the N/I be for this?
I am thinking about making taco salad for dinner tomorrow. Our taco salad consists of: ground chuck, taco bell taco seasoning mix, lettuce, sour cream, shredded mild cheddar cheese, tomatoes, sometimes onions. Sometimes I also smash up doritoes in the lettuce and meat mixture... but I don't think that would be a good idea. I like to do that though because it gives it that taco crunch.
Anyway, I have no idea how to figure the calories and stuff for this. Ground chuck does not have N/I info. on the package. And the taco seasoning mix packet, I am sure that N/I is based on the seasoning only, not the meat. The rest of the ingrediants I can figure out. But I am stuck about the meat part. Any info. would be appreciated. TIA! |
Try here Tracy .... there's too many choices for me to guess what your chuck is like
http://www.calorieking.com/foods/cat...category_id=47 Sounds a bit naughty, doesn't it .... guess what your chuck is like  |
Does sound naughty lol.
I can't find anything on ground chuck or hamburger or anything. They gave me links to McDonalds, wendys, and other places sandwiches but that was it. I put in ground meat and it still came up with nothing. What else can ground chuck or hamburger be called? Lol. |
I find it on fitday by putting in patty.. lol It only specify's ground beef though. I weigh my meat before I eat it too. Then use websites to tally up oz's.
|
Thats it! Ground beef or beef duhh me lol.
Well going by beef lean pan fried... it is over 200 calories for 3 oz! That seems like a lot!! Not sure if taco salad is worth it! :( |
I used to love eating the huge taco bowl shaped shell stuffed with bunches of hamburger, sour cream (the only way I eat it), ect. Im usually a white meat only person. Since red meat is harder on the body to digest. I think I need to see if my scales are right by weighing something in it.. I had meatloaf yesterday and I think 2 oz's was like 260 calories. Again though I thought that was "alot" of meat too.
|
Yeah right! Gotta have it with extra sour cream!!! But I was going to do normal servings of it though. We probably will not have that for dinner. That is high in calories! Not worth it much to me! However, I might check into the calories for chicken (shredded or cubed chicken) salad with taco seasoning. I have done that before! It is yummy too! That might be less on the calories. I will try to remember to check out the calories for that today.
I never new that red meat was harder on our body. Sounds yucky lol. I bought a food scale from walmart.... it was digital. It was a waste. I smashed it and thru it away not to long ago. It never measured right. Now I just use the scale I bought off of ebay to sell on ebay lol. It works really good. It is just a normal scale. But I do mostly measuring cups... that is easier too most of the time. 2 oz. equals ¼ of a cup. If that helps. :) |
Tracy, there's all kinds of ground beef at the bottom of the link I gave you. I think it works. But if you've found something at fitday ... that's much easier.
How did you make out? |
Lol.... blonde moment! I went back in there and seen it this time!! Duhhh me! I don't see ground chuck anywhere though. I found something simuliar yesterday on calorieking and it was higher in calories. So I might skip that though. :(
|
One more thing just as a thought. Krogers will send you a nutrients chart through email for any of there meats. If you bought the meat there. Then you can add it to your fitday or even maybe write it down.
|
One way to lower the calories in hamburger (reguardless of the kind) is to drain it after you cook it, pour in a cup of water, heat to boiling and strain. Gets rid of a lot of fat!
|
Also, I forgot toadd, how about baked chips in the salad? You would still have that crunch. Or the WOW ones? Dieting is not about depriving yourself. It's about changing the way you eat and think about food. You can have anything, just not as much. Change the way you cook and look for new ideals. Lots of good recipes here!
|
Now I do that! I didn't know that would make a difference. I am going to do that more often when I cook that. Thanks!
|
I cound't agree more. But those kind of chips cost to much for my house. And our local grocer don't sell those kind anyway. Small country town... very limited unless you travel. But when those chips do go on sale I would love to try them out! They look yummy! I will have to walk that isle in the store lol. I don't even go down that isle in the regular big grocery store anymore. ;)

Yes they are awsome! Also, like butterball products they do the same thing for you. |
How awesome! I am going to remember that and do that!
By the way... I got a bunch of boneless chicken breasts today. They were not really skinless... but I pulled and cut all of the skin off. I cooked it almost all the way, then I cut it all up into cube like peices, now I am finishing cooking it up and then I am going to add some taco seasoning mix to it. Then I will just throw that on top of a salad. :) Oh, I found LIGHT sour cream today!!!! It was like HALF the calories!!! I sure hope it tastes good! Lol. |
WOW lite sour cream? I hope it tastes good to! Please let me know. lol
I have tried the low fat cottage cheese (I love cottage cheese) and it was ronchy! Perhaps I should try to experiment with it by adding fruits. I bought some chicken (wasnt boneless but I perfer it) today too. I always cut the fat off. Which was a very hard thing to do when I first started to diet cause I love to batter fry them and take the skin off and put it into a sandwhich. Now I just eat everything with lemon pepper. Im learning though as you are. Ive tried smuckers low fat jelly in oats.. That was pretty awsome if your a oat eater. Let me know how your salad turns out!! :D |
what about a chicken taco salad mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
|
I know this is late, and you've probably already had your taco salad, but what about turkey burger? It tastes pretty much the same, and is much lower in calories. Its really not that much more (at least here where I shop) and I did get it on sale this week (buy 1 get 1 free)... so maybe that could be an option for you for next time?
~Liz |
Now I am bad!! I totally forgot I had 2 rolls of ground turkey in my freezer!!! This would have been the perfect time to try that out!!! I am defintely going to have to try this next time!!! :) Liz... thanks for reminding me about this! :)
|
mama2aredhead............ that is what I did. :) It is just alot of work. :)
|
Jewelz,
It tasted pretty real!! I didn't have any problem with it at all! :) You gotta check it out. I will buy it again. I don't like any kind of cottage cheese. Every once in a blue moon I will have a little at a resturante but that is about it. Now that sandwich you used to make sounds so yummy!!! I love eating the skins. But I am not even ordering fried chicken anymore because there is no way I would throw the skin away instead of eat it. I know myself way to well lol. I have never heard of smuckers low fat jelly in oats, or anything like it. I know they came out will low sugar jellies and stuff like that, but I never new about what your talking about. What is it? Dinner was yummy! And it was so filling! Sour cream was great! :) |
I have to say ground turkey is sooooooooooooooooooooo yummy!! I buy that too! When I was doing WW's that is what we would eat. I still have a hangup on it still. I cook mine alittle weird though.
Im "sorry" I miss wrote that is sugar free smuckers jelly. Its really low in calories.. I never ate it before until my mom gave me a jar of it and ever since then I was in love. Even the 40 cal tbl for the 100% fruit kind. Both are delicious. I kinda wonder I have a grill that drains off any excess oils off the hamburger if it could lower the cal intake. Hubby loves from me to use the inside grill. I figured it was more healthier anyways. I got me a new pedometer yesterday. It talks to me! lol It has me in a decent mood today. This thing will time your walking and if you stop it stops counting time. Its really neato! Walmart special lol. Ill have to try the sourcream out then. I dont eat it much but it would be nice to have it around when I do eat it. Plus, hubby eats it like crazy.. so if its good Id rather him eat that. |
When my husband and kids want taco salad, I do the following:
~I don't make it all up in a huge bowl and serve out of it. I make everyone's plates of the seperate ingredients, and let them "mix it up". The reason being, is because I will use very little meat and cheese, and make the bulk of MY salad lettuce and salsa instead-with just enough meat and cheese to taste it-but it is mostly veggies. ~I don't use regular hamburger or ground chuck-the most caloric and fatty cuts of ground beef. I use either ground sirloin, or extra lean ground beef-my favorite is Laura's Lean, which they sell at Kroger-and it is only about 140-160 calories for 1/4 of a package. ~I don't use sour cream. I use salsa to flavor mine for more veggies and less calories. ~I use TONS of the lettuce, tomato, onion, and salsa...and very little beef and cheese for mine-measuring them out. This is also how I add up the calories-by measuring my items out individually and adding them up. |
Aphil,
That is what I do too. I make all plates seperately. I want to measure out everything that goes on my plate so have an accurate calorie count. :D I have been doing that for a while now. It really helps. Laura's Lean... where is that found? In the fresh meats or in the frozen area? I don't think I have ever seen that before. I was always led to believe that ground chuck was the best to eat!!! Guess that was wrong too! I really think I have to forget EVERYTHING I have learned in the past and just remember what I have learned recently! I was thinking about salsa too!!! But no one (except my son) eats it here. So I skipped that again. I was told that is good for you though! I do like my sour cream for taco foods. The lite stuff I found was not bad at all! It actually tasted real! Lol... I try to do mostly lettuce too! I was not sure what other veggies could go in there besides tomatoes of course. So that is all it was, was lettuce and tomatoes for the veggies. Aphil.... you are awesome!! I always seem to learn something from your posts. :D |
Jewelz,
I will reply to your posts to me soon. I am making a big breakfast today! :^: But I will reply shortly. |

It tastes just as good... but it is not as bad for you as real sugar and for sure it is less calories.:D Originally Posted by Jewelz76: Originally Posted by Jewelz76: Originally Posted by Jewelz76: |

George Forman~ Yes! thats it! The family wanted hamburgers yesterday so I brought it back out. Lots of excess grease! I would assume it should mean less calories. Ill have to look around online until I find some data about it. Pedometer~ It was like $15.00 I think. It was hard for me to set it up until I got online and they explained how to set your stride up. That was the hardest for me to figure out. Next step is to get me a speed o meter. I have found if you dont have it set level with your britches it will cause it to over count your steps. Its pretty neat it said I had walked 10,000 steps today. Which is a pretty slacky day. lol Oh yeah the pedometer is black. I didnt see any other color.. but maybe there is in your area though. |
I make a taco salad with ground turkey (a fewer less calories than ground beef and much less fat), seasoning(0 calories), a combo of spinach and romaine, tomatoes, black olives, sprinkling of lowfat cheese. For dressing I use lowfat ranch dressing and salsa mix. 1:3 ratio with more salsa than ranch. Tastes great and you don't miss the fat!
|
MMMMMMM..... I love kraft mac and cheese with (or even without) tomato sauce! Kind of like italian. It is so awesome!! I grew up on it. My husband hates it lol.
Let me know what you find out about the George Foreman. I would sure think it would make for a lot less calories! The podometer sounds really neat! And like a pain at the same time lol. I always wonder if it is accurate. But it sounds like if you set it up right (which I probably didn't do when I had one!) it would work better! I am defintely going to have to check into that one day! A speedometer would be awesome too!! Lol. |
Hi Again, Lots of good tips here. I've used the low fat sour cream for years, don't really miss the other. And did you know that Peter pan made a "whipped" peanut butter? Its about 1/2 the calories of regular and much less than the low fat. Kind of hard to find, but I asked my grocer to order it for me. I told him I would buy the whole case if it didn't sell! I haven't had to but I would have. I love peanut butter and it's so healthy.
I love my george forman grill. I make lots of things on it. My chicken breast for my salads, hamburgers, fish. If it's something very lean I spray it with pam. Another great invention. One more way to get some of the grease off hamburger patties: I just put it between 2 paper towels and press. Every little bit helps. Turkey makes great chili. By the time you get all the seasoning in there you can hardly taste the difference. I make it often. Another tip: I never tell my husband i'm dieting and making diet food. That way he doesn't complaine about eating what i make or call it "diet food". It's just food and it wouldn't hurt him either. |
I had no idea about the peter pan peanut butter! I am going to have to check into that!
I was going to pull my george foreman out, but I have to wait till my kitchen if fixed (discussed on another board) first now. I might have to get a smaller one to because if I remember right the cord and outlet on the wall got really warm last time I used it. Not sure why. Lol.... not many complain about the foods here lol. But they want the junk still lol. |
