Nutritional Information Label - Can't figure this one out.

  • I am thinking about making some popcorn. But I can't figure it out. And caloriking is not giving the right info. either.

It is: Pop Secret 94% Fat Free Butter Saturated Fat Free

The label says a serving is 3 tbsp unpopped but then just below that it says (makes 6 cups popped). Just like that. So when you go down and read the different info. ....

3 tbsp unpopped..... 6 cups popped..... 1 cup popped
    120 calories............ 110 calories......... 20 calories

Each way (fat, fiber, protien, carbs, etc) only gives percentages for everything except the calories. So how would I calculate this on fitday so I can put it in there if I eat it?

    TIA
  • Everything I read in fitday says that plain popcorn with no fat at all has 30 cals per cup ..... So I'm doubting the labelling. I believe they are allowed to fudge just a smidge. As in some dressings that have no calories as long as you only eat one teaspoon but if you eat enough, it has calories indeed.

Theoretically 1 gm of fat has 9 cals, 1 gm of carbs has 4 cals as does one gram of protein. If you'd like to figure it out for yourself, that would be the way to go.
I'd probably just use one that is in fitday already.

Microwave popcorn varies depending on the brand-so Fitday probably just "averages" the calories of it. Different brands use different recipes, different amounts of oil, etc.

The popcorn listing isn't really all that difficult. If you eat the entire bag-approximately 6 cups of popcorn, then you count it as 110 calories. If you only measure out 1 or 2 cups of it, then count it as 20 calories a cup.

If your question is, why is it 120 calories for the whole thing unpopped, but 110 for it popped, it is because there are always a few kernels that are left unpopped in the bag, and they are assuming that you aren't going to eat them.
  • Thanks you guys! That sure helps. I couldn't figure out what to do. I like to eat 2 or 3 cups (roughly - never measured really before now) sometimes at night while watching tv. It is hard to watch tv because normally I am smoking or eating during that time. Without both I fall asleep lol. So this might be helpful. It seems to be low in points so it might be good. Thanks again!
