Best Counting App?
Hello All! I am finally back in the land of the living, as far as cell phones are concerned, and can now start tracking calories again. I gave up mobile tracking a few months ago as my poor, pitiful iphone 4 couldn't handle the pressure..So, I've got a shiny new phone that needs a counting app..I've used MyFitnessPal and SparkPeople in the past..Which one do y'all like?
Since I eat variations on the same thing most days I used to keep an excel spreadsheet on my PC. It worked out far easier that way.
I swear by MyFitnessPal. Its helped me lose weight in the past and I know plenty of people its helped as well.
I use the free weight loss app called lose it. It has most foods nutrition facts available via Internet connection and puts me at a daily average of 500cal below my natural burn weight to lose 1lb/wk
I've tried them all but find My Net Diary to work best for me. I also use a spreadsheet to analyze the data over time.
I like the fitbit website. My fitbit broke, but I still prefer their site for tracking.
I use an app called Fatsecret. I really like it, I'm not sure how accurate it is (I hope they're calories burned for exercise isn't TOO off!) I've only been using it about three weeks though, so it's hard to tell. I almost got MyFitnessPal but went with this instead. It allowed me to customize my info (a lot like my fitness) it has a barcode scanner for food and I can easily add foods.
I have a sort of loose counting policy. I don't want to obsess (I have a tendancy to do that) so I aim for 1400-1700 calories a day, leave room for treats and haven't changed what I eat so much as spread out my meals, drastically dropped my carb intake, upped my veggie intake and slightly increased my protein intake. |
I have something called the "simple calorie count". You input your meals or snacks via your own math or calculations. You can also add in exercise.
I use My Fitness Pal & love it. Simple, easy, & can sync up with some fitness tools & apps.
my favorite counting app is FatSecret
I always go back to FatSecret when I'm tracking. It lets me create and store favorite "meals" and it has an extensive inventory of foods to pick from. I have friends who use-and love-LoseIt. The thing I didn't like about LoseIt was that I couldn't enter things in advance...I like to plan the night before and then if I don't eat something, I can remove or change it. I think it's what you get used to.
I vote for My Fitness Pal too! I love it!
My Fitness Pal. Hands down, no question.
I use to use fit day but now use my fitness pal because it syncs with my Fitbit. Also, I love that I can scan so many foods and it immediately enters the info.
Love that!! |
I've started using the ap Lose it and I really like it. Easy to add my meals and keep track of progress.
Love MyFitnessPal. Their database is huge (though usually good to double-check since it's all user generated).
I also have an ap (free) called WeightRecord that I use to track my weight, as the MFP tracker is one of the few things I don't love about the ap. |

I use MyNetDiary. I think it is the fastest one to use.
I use to use Friday and just installed it but it is really slow, going lot TRY some of the suggestions here.
I find MyFitnessPal works the best for me and has the best database.
Hey! Just wanted to chime in. My favorite app is MyNetDiary. While it doesn't have as large of a database as said, Myfitnesspal & whatnot, it's growing... what I like about it is if you weigh food on a scale like I do, it automatically knows the calories by grams / oz / etc. No hassle like I had with MFP.
It's pretty nice! And as you lose it changes your recommended calorie intake for you so you don't need to worry about it. |
i didn't know that MFP syncs with fitbit! I'm excited about that I stopped using it soley because I got a fit bit and dont like keeping a lot of seperate logs.
Im new today posting anyway Twish, Im with you height weight wise glad Im not alone at this i could use some support. i use fitness pal also enjoy every ones posts i lost 21 since jan7. i do not know how to use this site well but am hope full someone will reach out a hand up i will try to do the same

I tried several apps - after some while of testing I can recommend the YAZIO app.
The basic functions are completely free, and I like the design much more than the MyFitnessPal app… At https://www.yazio.com/en you get a first impression. At the beginning I was just curious if food tracking would work for me but after two weeks I was definitely convinced. I don’t see that it is necessary anymore to pay for a special diet. I could lose 3 pounds within two weeks just with controlling my eating habits. |
MyFitnessPal
My Fitness Pal on my iPhone. I like the barcode reader feature.
My Fitness Pal! I keep my stuff logged every day!
Huge MFP fan here. It's so easy to use with it's huge database and recipe import module. I LOVE it! All of my sisters and a number of friends are on it also and we can all encourage each other.
I was a sucker for Spark People, until I discovered My Fitness Pal. Still go to Spark people once in awhile, but the mobile version of MFP is great!
I'm also a "Lose it" fan - it syncs with my fitbit, it's easy to enter food and you can tell it to repeat meals easily.
I was using Lose It until reading this thread and I decided to try My Fitness Pal. I think I like MFP better because food search results are more accurate and they seem to have a bigger database. I also like that I can log into my account anywhere (cellphone or computer) to input calories :)
I tried Spark, Lose It, My Fitness pal and one other one, too, but there's so much to wade through and you can't count micros.
My Net Diary is so much better. You get DETAILED nutrition info. There is an Ask The Dietician section so you can get reliable answers to serious questions. There are plans and all kinds of extra things that you just don't get with Spark and Fitness Pal. On the Food Diary part, they put a little picture of your food next to the line it's on, which isn't necessary, but is cute. :) It's more intuitive, too, which would be hard and take forever to explain, but it makes logging that food much easier. It's not free, though. It's like $60 for a year. If you see a doctor or dietician, they can probably get you a discount. I got one. :) To me, all the extra stuff was worth paying for. If you're counting calories, I highly recommend it. :) |

I use the MFP app and enjoy it because the have a large database of gluten free food that I eat.
I use the Livestrong MyPlate app and love it. I often think about changing to MyFitnessPal because I've heard so many good things about it, but want to keep on with Livestrong because it's got all my data on it from so long ago! So will keep on trucking with that.
There is a free version of My Net Diary, which is the one I started with years ago. I now pay the $60 per year for My Net Diary Pro. Both are good.
I too have tried many. I used to use SparkPeople, and like it. I liked FitBit's quite a lot. Never got into MFP. Currently I'm using LoseIt and I'm enjoying the format and how it syncs to things I use. It's only been a week, so I'm still working on customizing a lot of my own foods.
I love Loseit. I wish there was a better way to guesstimate the calorie content of restaurant meals. Now that I'm on a diet, I can't really tell calorie content by my level of hunger.
