Thoughts on candy?

My dh bought me some candy for Christmas. He has offered to separate it into "100 calorie snack packs" for me.
Do you think it's wise?
I gave up candy back in November, but my daily calorie limit certainly leaves rooms for snacks.

i'd look at the reason you gave up candy...was it for the calories? was it because it's processed junk? was it because sugar triggers major overeating? etc....

i dont have the answer because i dont know why you gave up candy....however, good for you! lol i doubt i could ever give something up 100%...i tend towards attempting moderation...it's a work in progress

It depends how much of a trigger it is for you. I guess best thing to do if you want, is take hubby up on his offer, and if it is causing too many cravings you can decide what to do from there.

personally, i can't do it! i have trouble controlling my sugar intake once I start.

I think anything in moderation is fine, if you can indeed moderate.

I gave up candy just to get rid of unnecessary calories and a tendency to over eat junk.

I know I can do it in moderation... If its pre-proportioned.

That's so nice of him! I think if you have the spare calories and it doesn't make you crave more, go for it. Maybe have one or two a week.

Thats really sweet of your husband. I would have him separate it and hide it (bc I am not to be trusted) that way I could just ask for some when I wanted it. Having to say it out loud/make someone else aware would help me keep myself in check. Because otherwise I'd eat 4+ 100cal packs in a sitting.

You, however, seem to have more of a handle on your eating. So it sounds like a fine idea for satisfying the occasional sweet tooth without over-consuming.

I agree.

I always have pre-portioned candy or treats around. For me, moderation is completely sustainable. Completely cutting out that stuff is not.

If you have the self control, go for it. I personally try to keep candy out of the house because I do not!

Thanks for the advice y'all!

I just interviewed a leading Canadian dietitian today. She said she tells her clients to have up to 100 cals of added sugar per day if they enjoy it, so your husband's snack packs fall within her recommended range (as long as you don't add sugar to your coffee or tea on those days).

If my husband knew I was avoiding candy then bought me candy for Christmas I'd be like, what the heck pal? lol

It's not easy for me to avoid foods that trigger me, so while I don't outright ban foods -- I do try not to have my worst trigger foods readily available. For me, 100 calorie packs wouldn't really help with my worst trigger foods. I'd just eat like 5 packs lol It just depends on whether you believe it will set you back or whether you feel you could eat one a night -- and only you can answer that. Good luck with whatever you decide!

If you can be satisfied with one serving, why not? Dieting shouldn't be about depriving yourself of something forever and ever, because that sucks. If you can handle it and not go off the deep end into an epic sugar search, go for it!

I'm one of those that can have one piece, be satisfied, and move on. I keep candy around and it will literally sit there for months before I finish it, but I do enjoy having it on the rare occasion that I do.

Of course, I only like the high quality stuff...Godiva chocolate and all that.
