Calorie counting exercisE and missed period

  • So my periods are usually like clock work. I have an app for my phone that tracks it and it's never been late in the past 3 years. A couple of months ago I started calorie counting and walking. I was eating 1600 calories a day and burning roughly 200 calories a day every day. I am 5'8, 216 lbs and 30 years old.

Couple weeks after I started my period showed up two days early with no regular symptoms.

About a week later I started the couch to 5k program with walk days in between and still consuming 1600 calories.

My period was due 7 days ago and hasn't showed up. I've had severe pms, cramping, the usual pre period panic attacks and anxiety but no period. Hubby is snipped and has been tested as infertile. I've taken two tests and both
negative. Three days ago I increased my calories to 2100 wondering if I was too low and I've also started p90x because I find mOre rigorous exercise is good for y anxiety. But this pms for a week thing is pissing me off. My periods are horrible so I have to wear a pad now it in case because it's like a flood when it starts

My calories weren't very low and my exercise at te time of my missed period weren't strenuous so I don't know what's going on. I called to make a doctors appointment and I can get in to see her again in late September. Grrrr

    Any ideas????
  • Any ideas from me would be pure speculation. I've heard both ends of the straw- getting more regular and becoming irregular. However, the fact that you suffer so much before TOM sounds to me like a doctor's help would be useful anyway.

Just wanted to apologize for the lack of advice and say let us know when you find out something! Try not to worry too much!
  • This happened to me as well. I am 45 though, so I thought it was possibly because of perimenopause, but I have thought it was possibly due to my weightloss and working out. I was 9 days late...I NEVER am. Since then, my periods are a little different then before.
  • How much fat are you getting?

If I don't eat enough fat, I lose my period.
  • I have my maros set at 30% and I am usually very close. Runs me about 60 g of fat a day.

Hmmm... What is your diet like, what kinds of foods do you eat?
  • Hmm well most days are very similar. Here was today:

Breakfast. 2 sl whole wheat toast, 2 tbsp pb, 1 tbsp sugar free jam, nectarine
Post workout. Scoop protein powder, cup of 1% milk. Coffee with cream
Lunch. 2 scrambled eggs, 10 baby carrots, 1/4 banana
Snack. Energy bar, marble cheese stick
Dinner. 4 oz pork roast, 2 tbsp BBQ sauce, whole wheat bun, up f watermelon cubes, 1/2 cup coleslaw
Snack: scoop protein powder, cup 1% milk and 1 cup frozen Mango chunks
  • 60 grams of fat a day? Are you losing on that? I'm just curious, my nutritionist told me not to eat more than 30 grams a day and I've lost 11 lbs in 3 weeks so far.

Where did your nutritionist go to school? Genuinely curious.

I lose better on high fat/low carb. I'm slowing down considerably now, but when I was losing at a good clip I regularly ate close to 100 grams of fat a day, from whole sources.

    She is absolutely fantastic.
  • You bet! I've lost 14 lbs and 21 inches in 6 weeks!
  • when i put added stress on my body in any form, i tend to lose my period...this includes ruptured discs in my back, DH drama, harder exercise, changing foods that i eat majorly, decreased calories, etc....thankfully none of that has happened all at the same time, just examples...but as i've gotten older i've found that any major sources of mental or emotional or physical stress will take away my period...i'm on birth control and know i've not been pregnant, and i get all the symptoms of a period, just no actual one

That's awesome! I was just wondering bc I hadn't heard of eating high fat--but whatever works! I guess different diets work for different people, glad you are seeing results. Anyway, sorry for changing the topic

Dietary fat does not translate to body fat any more than calories from any other source do. Regardless of macro profile weight loss is all about calorie deficit .
