Do you count in raw/steamed veggies?
I just began my calorie counting and I have decided not to count any raw or steamed veggies (I count everything single thing except the veggies).Does anyone else do this?
I decided not to count them because it is my understanding that weight watchers does not count them. Any thoughts? |
When I did WW, I didn't count them. Once I switched to calorie counting, I counted everything. I know they are not going to make a huge dent, but I like to have a grand total.

I count them, not because I eat so many that they add up to hundreds of calories, but because I like make sure I'm eating enough of them and getting enough fiber. And because for things like potatoes I have to weigh and count them because that would be easy to eat an extra couple of hundred if I'm just "guessing."
Weight Watchers doesn't count them because they give you a point limit that s about 200 calories below what they think you should eat and then assume you'll eat about 200 calorie of fruits and veggies. |
I'm counting them, but I'm not strict about weighing them out, so for the most part it's just an estimate. Like there's 5 servings in one bag of baby carrots. I grab a handful and count it as a serving. Some veggies do have high calorie count though, like peas. One serving of peas has 70 calories! So those I do measure out.

Having done calorie counting in the past and WW now, I honestly don't think you need to. I have HUGE servings of veggies (steamed, roasted etc) that don't count towards my daily WW goal with no negative effects. It encourages healthy eating while not making you feel guilty for eating that extra 60 calorie serving of veggies.

If I have a giant serving, I just tack on 50 calories to the meal's count. I'm much too lazy to start figuring everything out.
My salads generally just get bundled with whatever else I'm eating because I don't use dressing on them anyway. When I did sit down and figure them out, they came out to around 35 calories. So I wasn't going to go crazy over that. I round up most things anyway, so I think it evens out when I'm not exact with other things. |

I have not been counting lettuce, carrots (I use a little in salads), and broccoli. I have stayed away from potatoes. I think now I will look at the calories per serving so that I am at least aware of how many calories they have. |
WW has built 5 servings of fruits and veg into the daily target so they are counted behind the scenes. I count everything. It adds up faster than you think.

I also count them but not weigh them out, but rather make a rough guess as to how much I'm having. :D

The only things I DON'T count are cooking spray and sugar-free gum. I eat a lot of veggies, and it adds up! Looking at my meals for today, veggies account for about 250 calories and thats pretty average for me. Not counting 250 calories per day would really add up.

Yes, I do count. My logic is this: 80g of green beans is only 20 cals or so, but if I didn't count that it might give me license to eat 240g (oh, I really could, quite easily :D), which would add 60 cals. If I did that at even two meals a day, which I may be tempted to if I wasn't counting them, I'd be eating an extra 120 cals per day, and if I did that every day an extra 840 cals per week ...mm, that would be just under a quarter of a pound in weight ? So, I count!

I'm with everyone else, I count them. I eat a ton of them right now and it would add up but just like seagirl said I like to make sure I'm eating enouh and getting my daily amount of fiber. Not to mention if you don't record them and then go back to see what you were doing in the past, say you get stalled or what have you, you wond know how much you were eating then vs what you're eating now, just a thought

I'm counting them but don't mind guesstimating the green leafy stuff. If it's a more calorific veg I'll weigh it.

I count them as well. Sometimes I estimate when I make a salad, but do count them. With the new WW plan calories aren't even a factor when coming up with points (I am sure they are on the back end, but not part of the info that people plug in when coming up with a points value)

I don't count veggies or fruits. I am back on Weight Watchers and losing nicely. Weight Watchers definitely IS a "calorie counting" way of eating, only you count points instead of actual calories. But points ARE calories - just a different way of counting. Weight Watchers theorizes fruits and veggies never made us fat. I agree. And they are the lowest caloric density foods on the planet.
It's such a relief not to count every little thing that goes in my mouth. All I know is fruits and veggies never made me fat, but everyone's mileage varies, and in the end we all have to work our programs to our advantage. |
I count them all. Some things like salad greens don't amount to much, but tomatoes and beans can surprise you. I also think it's important to see my nutrients. In the past when I had a stall it was helpful to see where my calories were coming from and tweak the levels of carbs/sugars/etc.

I count them, but just to make sure my diet is well balanced. If I have already had 1800 calories for the day and I feel like snacking on broccoli and cucumber, I will snack on them :) I gladly take in the extra 100 of nature's goodness.

I count them, but I just estimate on the low calorie ones.
