Default Bacon! Bacon! Bacon!

I love bacon and I found out something veeery interesting~~

"Traditional cured pork bacon cooked in the microwave has 25 calories per slice, while pan-frying the same product yields bacon with 42 calories per slice, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture." ~~taken from Livestrong

Hooray for microwaved BACON!

Elliemar,

It seems that microwaving pulls more fat out of the bacon? I'm not sure but I know I have a microwave bacon tray from the 80s hidden somewhere in my cupboards!

-goes hunting it-

I think I may add a package of those pre-cooked bacon slices to my shopping list ...

I microwave my bacon on paper towels - wrap it up with 2 layers of paper towel beneath and 2 layers above, put it on a plate, microwave on high for 1 min and 20 seconds for the first slice, and 1 additional minute for each additional slice, up to 3 slices (3 min, 20 seconds)

The paper towel absorbs much more of the fat. If you're pan cooking, the bacon is sitting in the grease that is rendered, and some of that fat clings to the slices when they're cooked. Microwaved bacon is much less oily, since the paper towel picks up that grease that would normally cling to the slice, so the calorie count is lower.

Thanks for pointing that out, EatMoreCelery. My DH has had me cooking bacon in the microwave using paper towels for quite a while, but I prefer my bacon "softer" (in other words, with less of the fat cooked out.) I'm trying to adjust my mindset to a more Mediterranean style of eating -- today is Day One! -- I probably shouldn't be eating bacon at all ...

correction, Livestrong says 70 calories in 3 slices of pre-cooked bacon. Hormel brand is 80 calories for 2 slices.

thanks, Kellie

Wonder if you drain bacon fat from a pan fried with paper towels how that works for calories? We ALWAYS drain anything we fry with oil on paper towels - above and below and it gets a LOT of grease (like schnitzel).

Not sure, Melissa.
Microwaved bacon seems much less greasy than pan-fried bacon (even with draining the pan-fried).
I like the texture of fried bacon best but the calorie difference has me thinking...
