Oh my gosh! Sushi isn't that bad! Rice is high-GI but it's pretty much the only thing that'll give you substantial calories out of it (that and the fish, if there's a lot of it. I tend to just 'write off' calories from such a super-healthy ingredient as fish).
When going for sushi the number 1 rule would be--no fried fillings! No tempura rolls, no spider rolls. Try a
veggie futomaki roll, they're so delicious, like California rolls with additional veggies. Futomaki-style rolls are the big fat ones(think about the width of a cucumber), so they're really filling. I checked a few different sources and 6 pieces of VEGGIE futomaki is around ~300 calories.
