I've been reading a bit about diet sodas stalling weight loss. I've been drinking the Vitamin Water Zero stuff. Does this have the same effect? It says it's "naturally sweetened" but who knows what that really means.. Thanks in advance for any insight!
I cant answer your question, but I can say that I have been drinking the same stuff too. I dont think it takes the place of real water, but it is better for you than diet sodas are and at least you know that you are getting alot of vitamins without sacrificing taste.
Personally, I dont think it stalls weight loss, but thats just my opinion
I drink diet soda, and I haven't noticed that it stalls. But I do notice that when I drink more water, I have better weeks.
I also love Vitamin Water Zero (XXX flavor is my fave), but have changed to water with a squirt of Mio Berry Pomegranate. Much cheaper and you can adjust the strength of flavor.
That article is generally terrifying, and I am thoroughly glad I've always naturally gone for a wholefood diet. While learning to calorie count did give me a few shocks - nuts are much higher in fats and lower in protein than I'd realised, for instance - at least I'm not dealing with this sort of thing. Eep.
I generally like drinking Vitamin Water Zero a lot as well, like you. I never get the regular, which is what that article is referring to, so I think it's not going to cause a stall unless it triggers you to eat certain foods (some people craves sweets.)
That being said, if you're worried about the artificial sweeteners, Sobe makes lifewater with 0 calories that is supposed to be a lot more natural and better for you (using stevia instead of aspartame) and I generally like the taste better. Try them out if you see them.
I've dieted with and without artificial sweeteners and diet sodas, and on "only water" and "water and other zero calorie beverages", and for me - no difference.
Some people have different experiences with low-calorie sweeteners. Maybe they help you stay on plan, maybe they increase your cravings for carbohydrates. The only way to know for sure, is to experiment.
As to the Vitamin Water Zero, it is sweetened with stevia and xylitol, both considered natural sweeteners. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol (made from fruit). The problem with the sugar alcohols, is that there's some evidence that some people can digest them (obtain more calories from them) and they also tend to have a laxative effect, so you want to be careful when trying one you're not familiar with, and be especially careful about multiple servings of anything containing a sugar alcohol - which all end in -ol: xylitol, manitol, sorbitol...
I was drinking a lot of the Zero vitamin water until I started using Mio and True Lemonade packets in my water. I've been losing an average of 3.5lbs a week, so it hasn't made me stall in any way.
