What's giving me heartburn?

  • I've been experiencing some heartburn as of late.

My daily diet usually goes like this:

    Breakfast
3 scrambled egg whites (fried in 1 teaspoon of olive oil)
2 slices of toasted wheat bread
2 slices of turkey bacon (microwaved to remove excess fat)
    Cup of water

    Snack
    Cup of Cheerios (no milk)
    Cup of water

    Lunch

Tuna sandwich (2 slices of toasted wheat bread, 3oz of tuna (canned, light, in water), 1 tablespoon of light mayo from Hellmann's, chopped onions, red and green bell peppers)
1 strawberry yogurt (Dannon Lght & Fit)
    Cup of water

    Snack

2 tablespoons of fat-free Kraft ranch dressing
1/2 cup of peeled, mini carrots
    Cup of water

    Dinner

1/4 cup brown rice (1/4 cup raw, 1 cup cooked) cooked with 2 teaspoons of olive oil
1/2 cup of Perdue Short Cuts Carved Chicken Breasts cooked in 2 teaspoons of olive oil.
1 cup of chopped iceberg lettuce
1 tablespoon of fat-free Kraft ranch dressing
    Cup of water

Okay... looking at that, there's a whole lot of olive oil'ing going on lol but I thought olive oil was good for you.

I also notice lack of fruits. It's funny because I bought some bananas, apples and tangerines last time I went grocery shopping but I'm scared of the sugar.
  • Maybe your dairy? My mom always has heartburn after dairy. Its not lactose intolerance...but dairy just gives her issues. Yogurt, ranch...

Also, I know eggs are trigger foods for heartburn as well. And raw veggies...like onions and peppers can cause heartburn. Try eliminating one food group at a time (dairy, raw vegs, etc) and see if it goes away.
  • You don't need to be afraid of the sugar in fruit. It has nothing to do with sugar you put in beverages or sweets. Fruit is good for you.
  • Are you getting plenty of water in? You wrote down a cup at breakfast - are you drinking more than that during the day? I have found that getting plenty of water really helps with heartburn.

As for the menu - I don't know if it will help your heartburn, but I think you should eat the fruits, and about 10x more vegetables too. The veggies chopped into your tuna salad - is that even one full serving of vegetables? Then the carrots - but none at all with dinner ... vegetables are your friend. Really, really your friend. Let them be MOST of the volume of your food, not a tiny little grudging accompaniment to your food.

Also, I don't think there is anything wrong with olive oil, but I wonder if you need to use so much of it in your cooking. I can't even imagine how you fit 2 tablespoons of it into 1/4 cup of rice. 4 tablespoons in your dinner alone, that's about 500 calories just in oil. Why not spend 400 of those calories on something else? Like those fruits.
  • Oh gosh! I meant teaspoon! Teaspoons of oil! Yea, let me go correct that lol.

I started Power90 on Monday and I've been trying to get in 2 liters everyday so yea I've been drinking a lot more during the day than what I have up there.

Veggies in my tuna? I have no idea if it's a cup. I just cut it up into the bowl and stop when it "looks right" for the amount of tuna I'm eating

I'm not big on veggies though. I just "discovered" carrots 2-3 weeks ago. I'm still in the beginning stage when it comes to veggies.
  • Try omitting the green pepper.
  • Hi:
Could be the green pepper, or preservatives in the turkey bacon (salty too) or yes, if you are lactose intolerant or have the tendency, that could cause the HB. I had to give up yogurt as a snack until I had my gall bladder out. For some reason when I tried it after that I was fine!
  • Im going to take a guess and say Onions..they are known to cause heartburn..
  • Bread can be a problem for me sometimes!
  • The peppers and onions will do it to me.
  • But I love onions! I put onions in my scrambled eggs... in my tuna... in my ri... ahh okay. Yea, it's probably the onions.
  • I have no idea what is causing your heartburn. I would suggest seeing a doctor.

I can tell you what causes my heartburn. I have a hiatal hernia and the only time I get heartburn is when I am overeating. As long as I follow my diet, no heartburn, go off my diet and I get it every time without exception.

I started this weightloss on January 6th of this year and despite having a hiatel hernia I have experienced zero heartburn in the past 8 weeks.

    Larry,
  • Freaky as this is going to sound, my Mother gets heartburn from water. She drinks teas instead of drinking the water "straight". Weird, huh?
