Daily Plate help

I think I am finally going to take the plunge and switch from Fitday to daily plate. After a year of using Fitday, I am not happy with it. I have made suggestions to the administrator but I have seen no improvements. I even bought the PC version but the food database is so poor.

I am trying to find my way around daily plate. I don't see an option to add a custom food to my log and I think I would have to have this option in order to feel comfortable using the site. Is there an option to create a custom food that can be saved for later use? For example, I have recipes that have already been calculated using spark people. I just want to take the nutritional information for one serving and make a custom entry without having to recalculate my recipes all over again. Is this possible?

Thanks for the help ;)

Yes, there is. I had to add something to it a while ago that wasn't in there because it was a seasonal item. Hang on and I'll look so I can tell you exactly what to click on and stuff.

well I was thinking you'd use the "meal" option and use that...but that would require you to enter all the ingredients to set it up. After it's set up it would be there forever, but I understand you just wnat to be able to enter the numbers without putting in all the ingredients again.

you can use the "enter calories manually" option but that will only track calories, not other things. This is what I do if I am in a hurry and I know how many calories something was...but it doesn't track fat and sodium and fiber and all that fun stuff. I'm going to keep looking...

I've either done "create a recipe" or "create a meal" neither of which will be the shortcut you're looking for. You can just "enter calories manually" but that doesn't allow you to put in carbs/fats/proteins. Currently "add a new food" isn't working while they do some upgrades.

Myplate does have a pretty active forum area and they seem to take suggestions for upgrades pretty seriously. I use myplate daily and while it isn't perfect I like it much better than fitday (which I started with).

Yeah that's the conclusion I came to as well. I have used both fitday and tdp so I know exactly what she is looking for but currently it's not working on tdp. Fitday drove me to inanity, that's where I started as well.

Thanks girls. Hum..decisions. I am checking out spark people as well. It seems a little tedious but I am not used it it yet. I thought about switching once before but I ended up sticking with fitday despite the fact that I hate the database LOL. I will play around with these new programs and see what I come up with ;)

I think I did try that one once. Their database is similar to fitday and they seem to really focus on fast foods. I guess I am being too picky lol. I think that part of the problem is that I am Canadian and most calorie counting sites are based on American products that we don't have here. I wish we had Trader Joes!

I used sparkpeople for a long time and just grew so fed up with them. I witched to Livestrong and i love it!

lifeasme 01-08-2011 02:03 PM

Yes that's why I don't use lose it, their database wasn't extensive enough for me :)

sweetnlow28 01-08-2011 04:07 PM

So, with Livestrong (daily plate) what do you do when a food is not in the database?

sweetnlow28 01-08-2011 05:36 PM

I gave the daily plate a shot all day today and I think I like it ;). Most of my foods were already in the database except my salad dressing. I think I can live with that LOL. I am not really micro managing my calorie anyway so I can just throw in a random calorie amount when my item is not available. It will require me to keep fitday on hand for now to calculate any strange foods I have in my log that daily plate doesn't have yet. I really hope they make a custom food option soon. Other than that, I like the site, especially how each meal is divided so I can see what I am eating and when :)
Thanks for the help again

If you have all of the nutritional information, you can enter it as a recipe with the only ingredients being "generic calories" and "generic fat" and "generic protein," etc. Things like fat and protein added as an ingredient will add the appropriate number of grams to the nutritional information, but will not add calories - so you use generic calories for that and generic nutrients for everything else. If that didn't make sense, I can walk you through it in more detail :).

Try Fat Secret. I don't know about how easy it would be to add recipes, but I've found every food I've looked for...save one obscure vegan protein bar. It also will sync with your phone. I used Fitday for years, but I really like this better.
