Does this sound right to you?

  • I've just switched over to CC'ing from SB and am learning as I go. I use Livestrong/thedailyplate to track. I cook a lot, so this weekend I started using the "My Recipe" function where Livestrong will calculate calories, etc based off of your recipe. It seemed to work fine for a dish I made for dinner last night. This morning I put it in my meatloaf recipe because thats what I was having for lunch today.

    Recipe:
    1.25 lbs 93/7 ground beef
    1/4 chopped red onion
1/4 cup ketchup (this may be an over estimate as I just squirted some in and forgot to measure. Definitely not more than 1/4 cup)
1/2 cup old fashioned quaker oats
    1 egg

This is split into 6 servings of approx. 4 ounces.

Livestrong says that 1 serving contains the following:
    363 calories
    7.9 grams of fat
    94 cholesterol
    1891 mg sodium
    43.3 carbs
    38.3 sugars

My biggest issue is with the sodium, carbs and sugars. I just don't see where these numbers are coming from. Even I ate the whole 1/2 cup of oats, thats only 22 carbs. And nothing in the recipe is high in sodium, yet 1/6 of the whole meatloaf almost has 2000 mg of sodium?

Does this sound correct to anyone else?
  • Ketchup type stuff can be a divvil for carbs and sodium; onions are surprisingly high carb, although I see you only used a 1/4 one.
With dailyplate, is there a way of entering the Actual ketchup you used, rather than just generic ketchup? Maybe yours was healthier.

ps, it's how I make meatloaf too and my mouth's watering!
  • I've looked at my ketchups nutrition label and there are 190/mg of sodium and 4 carbs in 1 tbsp. I'm estimating there are probably 6- 8 tbsps in 1/4 cup for the whole meatloaf. Divide that by 6 for a serving and your are back down to 190 sodium and 4 carbs. It is just not adding up to me. 4ounces of ground beef has 85mg of sodium and 0 carbs. So with the Ketchup and Ground beef, that is 275 mg of sodium and 4 carbs. Add in the oatmeal, which has ZERO mg of sodium...

It just does not add up...
  • I tried it in Sparkpeople, and this is the answer I got - very different!

  • Thats in the whole meatloaf? That makes much more sense. I just did each ingrediant individually with the appropriate serving sizes and it dropped to:

    Cals - 249
    fat - 10.2
    sodium - 460
    carbs - 13

There must be an issue with the recipe function on livestrong. I triple checked the recipe for accuracy on my part.
  • I think that website has issues. It told me I'd have to eat no more than 1,035 calories per day to lose 1 pound a week. That's just insane.
  • I don't trust online calculators. I just add it up myself so I know for sure it's accurate.
