confused about what I read

  • in a book by Leslie S(?) called Walk Away The Pounds.I've had it for years, just never really "read" it.I read that she doesn't require you to go on any diet plan, just walk everyday. No mention of watching what you eat or calories cuz you can walk it all off.I wonder how well that'll work?I believe I'd still have to watch what I eat.
  • I do believe it is a mix of what/how much you eat along with exercise.

I am a calorie counter. It is simple and FREE. You can learn more on calorie counting and other eating plans at our Diet Central here - http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/#diet-central

    Good luck!
  • Diet is 80% of weightloss, exercise is 20%. Walking alone wont work well.
  • I wish I could scan in the page that had...don't worry about that chocolate cake your inlaws brought, you can walk it off...I'd have to walk 50 miles to do that! She talks about the water & stuff, but not about calories.

onederchic,I hope calorie counting is as good to me,you have done awesome!I've been doing this(off&on) since Feb.
  • diet is 100% IMO

You cant outexercise poor eating habits
  • Eat less, move more , it works !
  • I think the idea with "walk away the pounds" is that if you maintain your eating habits but add walking you'll lose the weight. It's an good idea in theory but not very realistic imho. I've nver been able to lose weight without watching my intake and I've never really been able to stay with a healthy weight loss way of eating -trying not to say diet- without excercise of some sort.

What have you found? Has anyone really lost weight with only walking?

the 'testimonials' in the book everyone used Weight Watchers also.I've discovered that I have to watch my calories along with my walking.
  • Exercise only would work, very slowly, if two things happened:

    1) You didn't start eating more. VERY hard not to do this, because you feel like you deserve to eat, and because you are hungrier. And it doesn't have to be a lot more: a few more french fries, an extra half-serving spoon of mashed potatoes, a slightly heavier hand with the peanut butter knife, and boom, all the burn you accomplished that day is canceled out.

    2) You weren't currently gaining. I think most people who aren't watching their weight are gaining weight, even if it's slowly--that's what "middle age spread" is, that extra 100 calories a day that adds just a little every day but adds up to 10 lbs a year. For a lot of people, exercise may cancel out the slow gain they didn't even know was going on, but it's not going to be enough to cancel out that gain and create a loss.
