What are your favorite substitutions?
In the spirit of the "given up" threads. What are your favorite substitutions be they replacements or just a lower calorie lower fat version.
I'll start Egg Beaters for regular eggs Kraft fat free swiss slices for regular cheese (it melts well) Ground lean turkey for ground lean beef fruit for junk food |
wholewheat pasta for the regular pasta
wholewheat pita bread for any kind of bread alpen muesli for any other breakfast cereal |

homemade whole wheat pizza crust for pizza hut deep dish meatlovers ours taste better!! no fat shredded cheddar cheese for regular shredded colby/jack cheese 100 calorie Klondike ice cream bars for regular Klondike bars |
I try to use spices instead of sauces.
Water instead of anything else. (Whenever I drink something else, I add an extra water before enjoying it.) I use ketchup on baked potatoes instead of butter and sour cream. Weighing instead of eyeballing. Exercise instead of excuses. A work in progress for sure. I hope I can make it to the end. |

- frozen banana, peach and berry smoothie w/ milk instead of ice cream - whole grain everything instead of processed grains - steamed vegetables instead of pan-fried - Hood calorie countdown milk in cooking/smoothies to cut half the calories compared to skim milk |
ground chicken/turkey in place of beef for every recipe
Splenda in place of sugar in my tea and recipes sweet potato in place of white raspberries and yogurt in place of icecream weight watchers wheat bread in place of larger wheat slices using a smaller divided plate in place of a large dinner plate |

Does anyone have a substitute for Ketchup? I've been eating it and finding its BURNING my tongue. Generally i do not eat salt ON things or put it in my food but thats the only thing... and i just about can't eat it anymore.. any suggestions?

I LOVE Shirataki "noodles" with a wedge of Laughing Cow melted over it - throw in a little chicken and a few mushrooms and I have chicken alfredo that is yummy and satisfying and hardly any calories at all.
Egg beaters are awesome too! |

Anything that's whole wheat
Skim milk for whole milk egg beaters for regular eggs yogurt instead of icecream Sweet-n-low/Equal/Splenda instead of sugar These are just a few of mine. |
Oatmeal for cheerios or corn flakes
Greek yogurt for yogurt, sour cream or mayo (in dips) Cottage cheese for other cheese in my salad Broccoli and other veggies for bread skinny cow instead of ben and jerry's Applesauce or pureed beets for oil in baked goods. (Seriously good beet chocolate cake I make for DH's b-day.) Evidently, most of by substitutions are dairy related!! |
