GI Counts

Do any of the calorie counter websites also give GI (Glycemic index) counts as well? I currently use "my plate" and like it just fine but I'd love to know the GI count for what I eat.

Failing that, can anyone here recommend a website with a fairly comprehensive list of GI counts. All the ones I've found are pretty basic.

I don't have a source for you, but before you go looking up the GI of a food, take a look at the difference between GI and Glycemic Load. I believe (if I remember this correctly) that the glycemic load is a much more accurate.

I use Sparkpeople but I don't see GI counts for foods and I found low GI recipes but not GI rates for the foods in their database. I did though find that there is a database here:

Just not any associated tool for daily tracking.

Agree with Eumie re: glycemic load being the more important number, since it's based on the amount of food you actually eat.

the good example is carrots - the GI is based on 50 gr of carbs. But 1 carrot only contains a few gr of carbs (depending on size), so unless you plan to eat a dozen carrots at a time, the GI doesn't mean that much.

I bought this book, it has a fairly comprehensive list of foods, I opened it maybe 5 times. I finding using the GI fairly easy. If one high fibre pasta is low GI then most are. Low fat dairy, lean protien, high fibre breads/pastas, fruits (no watermelon), veggies. That's my take on it anyway.

I couldn't get the search function to work at the Glycemic Index website and didn't really want to scroll through a hundred pages of items. Perhaps I'll mess around with it a bit more, I'm probably doing something ditzy.

I did order a couple books from paperbackswap - not as new as buying from amazon but free and good enough to get me started understanding GI a bit better.

thanks for the replies everyone!

Love this site.

I've always been a little overwhelmed by the ND site but I just went and really spent some time with it. It's still more information than I'm ready to be able to use yet but I can see how it'll be very helpful as I get better at making healthy food choices.

Thanks for recommending it so I went back to visit!
