Has anyone had their Resting Metabolic Rate measured by a machine?

Hi all,

I heard a personal trainer on the radio yesterday talking about having your RMR measured by an instrument that you breathe into for 10 minutes
and then it tells you how many calories your body burns at rest in a 24 hr period.
He does it at his gym and it's $60, I believe.

Has anyone ever had this measured? Is it worth it? or are the online calculators good enough?

Thanks :dizzy:

Never heard of that (but, that's not saying much, I must admit!) but fitbit is coming out in August for around $100. It will monitor your food eaten, calories burned, sleep each night, and several other body functions. (sort of like a bodybugg but without the monthly subscription fee) It will automatically upload your data to your computer just by being close enough to the unit for it to be read electronically.

Unfortunately, this device is still not out yet. On the good side, the people who are making it are real tech people from cnet and they are trying to make sure that the product is perfected before selling it.

To me, $60 seems kind of pricey because you would want to go several times to get an updated reading. If you are exercising, adequately hydrated and building muscle, this information will be changing.

Dont know whether its the same but I just had my basic calorie requirement mentioned at a health fair this weekend. They used a really high-tech looking tanita scale.

Thanks for the info shelterwatch. I'll be on the lookout for it.
I've been tempted to get a bodybugg. Mainly because it seems like a cool gadget.

Stella, this instrument you blow into it. It kind of looks like a ventilator.
So, I don't think it's the same.

Thanks :)

I just had my Metabolic Rate measured and it was within 100 calories from my daily plate calculation.

I have a good friend who did this at her local gym. She's been really pleased with the information she received. Apparently, she was informed that she was eating too little (and thus not losing) and working out too hard -- outside the fat burning zone. Now she has restructured workouts and meals and is finally dropping her stubborn pregnancy weight with far less effort and more food.

Of course, everyone is different but I think the information you get could be worth it...
