Can't Believe This!!!

Well ladies and gentlemen, after getting to an estimated 25lb weight loss, it appears as if all this healthiness has brought on a case of the preggo! Looks like my new goal will be towards maintaining for now, as I am afraid of losing while pregnant.
Any advice about diet, exercise, or general "take that deer in headlights look off your face" would be most appreciated!

Congratulations!!!! I wish you the happiest, healthiest pregnancy. And of course, baby too!

You can still continue to exercise throughout the pregnancy. You may need to alter the intensity as you grow, but for right now, even light aerobic exercise is okay. There are some people out there who water-ski, rock climb and so forth. I was never one of those people, but I did go to Lamaze classes and did trimester appropriate exercises. Walking is ALWAYS acceptable. I had toxemia aka pre-eclampsia with the first two, which cause MASSIVE weight gain and couldn't do much of anything toward the end. I enjoyed my 3rd much more with a gain of about 30 lbs.

I think as far as food goes, eat when you are hungry but definitely stick to more healthy, whole foods. Try and stay away from sodium as much as you can. This doesn't mean X it out altogether, but you will see a lot more swelling during the end of the second and all throughout the 3rd trimester if it is not kept in check.

These things will all help you maintain, and hopefully gain only the recommended 20-30 lbs. Some gain more, some gain less. I was always told by my GYN that no less than 15 and no more than 40 is a sign of a very healthy pregnancy.

I never did this with any of mine, but I have read that slathering yourself up with cocoa butter everday several times a day helps with the stretchmarks and prevents the loose skin. I don't know if I actually believe it. I think it depends on how much you gain and in my case, the weight gain could not be avoided with the first 2, and also depends on genes in general. But some people swear by it.

Most of all, just enjoy this time! Again, congratulations :)

Congratulations!!!! When are you due?

If you have a family doctor, they should be able to give you advice on diet and exercise. Also, I would recommend picking up a good pregnancy book (my boyfriend bought me 'The Joy of Pregnancy' as a gift). Make sure that if you're getting information off the internet, it's either from a reliable source, or you take it with a grain of salt and/or get a second opinion. There is some misleading stuff out there!

Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months!

Oh, yeah. I forgot about the books. The one dreamy mentioned is good, as is "What to Expect While Expecting". I read this one during my first, and the revised version during my 3rd. Of course, no pregnancy is ever "textbook" but it helps.

Pardon me while I turn GREEN with envy. Lol.

Congratulations!

From what I understand you should be eating around 2000 calories during the first trimester and 2300 or so after that. You should gain some weight during pregnancy, it's healthy. Remember that approx. 15 lbs will be baby and placenta, not fat gain.

... and what fat you DO gain is needed for milk production!

Talk with your OB about where you should be weight wise. The health of you and your child is worth having a bit more to lose later.

Thanks everyone! Definitely have a list of questions for my doc. I'm due at the end of January, can someone say Happy New Year?!

harrismm 06-08-2009 10:51 PM

Yea for you.I loved being pg and having my 3 babies.Enjoy!!

utgirl09 06-08-2009 10:53 PM

Yay! Congrats. Happy New Year yes! I was actually a New Years baby. My parents had to leave a New Years Eve Party because she went into labor! Best of luck with you in the next several months and beyond!

Congrats!

As I'm so not ready for kids of my own, the best advice I can give comes from my health-nut mom: Exercise, exercise. She ran about 4 miles everyday until she was about 6 months and then she swam a mile a day pretty much right until she went into labor. She was so fit that apparently my birth was a "breeze" (and all natural). Of course, every pregnancy is different, check with your doctor, and all that jazz. :) Congrats again!
