Same food with different calorie counts

  • I don't get this. I wanted to go buy some more kashi go lean cereal. For whatever reason, every brand the store had had oodles more calories and not as much fiber or protein. What is up with that! I have the same problem with soy milk. Why the heck isn't light soy milk the same calories no matter what. It drives me mad. I swear the same brand can be different calorie wise from week to week.
  • Are you saying the Kashi Go Lean is different from box to box? I know compared to other cereals you get a TON more bang for your buck but I've never seen a variance from box to box!

    Things like soy milk vary from product to product-- unfortunately for things with calories (like soy milk) there's only so much "diet" they can do it it before it starts to taste nasty. So you're not guaranteed a "0 Calorie" soy milk product the way you're guaranteed a 0-Calorie soda

    Also-- are you sure you're getting the exact same type as well as brand? I know when I send my boyfriend out for soymilk, he comes back with something different EVERY time! I'll get Plain, Vanilla, Vanilla +D, Plain +A&D... etc etc. All of which have different calorie counts
  • Well ... Kashi is a brand. If it's a similar type cereal, then it's not Kashi Go Lean. It's something else ... and there's no guarantee that the same ingredients are included.

    And even within the Kashi brand, there are different kinds of cereal. Just like Honey Nut Cheerios are differnt from regular Cheerios, Go Lean regular is going to be different from Go Lean Crunch, and so forth.

  • No, I mean kashi go lean. And I mean the same brand
    (whatever it is) of soy milk. I have no clue. I know the kashi I eat has only 140 calories 10 grams of fiber and 10 grans of protein. And it's yummy! The stuff I was looking at yesterday had 200 calories and less protein and fiber both. I think it's a different flavor or something, but it frustrates me. A 60 calorie difference is pretty big!

    I'm not sure if it was the same brand soy milk, but I have seen light soy milk range from 120 calories a cup to 70 calories, another huge difference.
  • That was probably the difference between the Kashi Go Lean and the Kashi Go Lean Crunch. I love the crunch and the calories are worth it to me . I eat half a serving over yogurt. YUM.

    But yeah... products will vary because their ingredients can vary drastically.

    That's why it takes me so long in the grocery store... I have to turn everything over and read it! It drives my husband bonkers.

    Yes, but that was my point.

    It's NOT the same cereal, so you cannot expect them to have the same calorie counts. That's like saying a fat free hot dog should have the same calories as a bratwurst because they're both sausages. It doesn't matter that they're both made by Oscar Meyer or whatever ... they're not the same product, so expecting them to have the same calorie counts is going to lead to disappointment.

    Unless you're comparing two of the EXACT SAME THING ... then you can't just assume that the same brand of a different kind of thing ... or the same thing in a different brand ... is going to be the same.
