What is your biggest source of protein?

Hello all, I am now tracking my macro nutrients, and was wondering what is your biggest contributing factor to protein? I was astonished to discover just how many carbs I was taking in, and found most of my sources of protein also largely contribute to my carbs.

Chicken, lean beef, pork tenderloin, ground turkey breast, greek yogurt, and egg beaters/egg whites...all of these are big parts of the protein in my diet.

mariarose 08-10-2008 08:54 PM

I'm not a big meat eater so on a daily basis plain yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, whole wheat products, and nuts and legumes provide most of my protein. I do have either a chicken breast, some shrimp, salmon, or sardines 1-2x a week.
If I were seriously trying to build muscle, I'd probably need more protein.

Beverlyjoy 08-10-2008 08:55 PM

Mine are egg whites, turkey, chicken, tuna (and other fish), ff cottage cheese, ff yogurt, lf cheese, lean pork , some whole grains and some beans. I also love peanut butter and almond butter. (eat both daily).

Horo 08-10-2008 09:06 PM

Boneless skinless chicken breasts, turkey breast, ground turkey, soy burgers, seafood, yogurt, eggs, beans, nuts.

Salmon, meat replacements like tofu and seitan, cheese and peanut butter to a lesser extent. Hey, mariarose, I noticed you included whole wheat products. Is there really that much protein in it? I'm afraid I have never looked. How curious!

mariarose 08-11-2008 10:04 AM

Not a TON of protein, but it seems like most of the breads I eat have 4-5 grams a slice, and the english muffins I like have 6 grams. Whole wheat pasta has protein too. None of them have a whole lot, but it all adds up.

EDITED to add: oatmeal, many cereals (kashi go lean especially!), quinoa, barley, and other grains have protein too!

Seafood, definitely. Turkey breast runs a close second. My protein grams are generally 100+ per day. When I run short I do a protein shake. I'm burnt out on chicken at the moment. Bawk!

paris81 08-11-2008 10:51 AM

Seafood, chicken, yogurt!

fiberlover 08-11-2008 12:53 PM

soy protein, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt and sometimes meat.

Spoz 08-11-2008 01:28 PM

Yoghurt, Egg and Tofu.

Rain Dancer 08-11-2008 10:36 PM

Lean beef, chicken, turkey, tuna, eggs, fat free yoghurt, low fat cottage cheese. I crave protein and try to get plenty in, every day. :D

My protein intake looks like everyone else's -- poultry, seafood, beef, nuts, dairy, soy...but there is one thing which I LOVE which I didn't see mentioned!! It must be because I'm in the Mile High City but I love a good Bison burger. They have less fat than regular beef and as a result are incredibly lean and rich in iron! So yummy! If you can...check them out...it makes for an interesting BBQ!

cdiem4994 08-12-2008 03:46 PM

You know what I want to keep in the car as a protein snack? Salmon jerkey! It sounds sooooo yummy. But I can't find it anywhere around me and the prices on-line are crazy high.

turkey breast, chicken white meat, halibut, salmon, yogurt, cottage cheese, chick peas (in hummus), and apparently according to others I get bonus protein points with whole grains! *blush* I didn't know that!

Tofu "meats" and a low calorie-protein fortified weight loss shake. I have beans and other legumes too.

I'm pretty sure I don't get enough protein. Being a lowcalorie vegetarian, its hard to come across things that fit in my plan. =/

I have this problem too. I've been tracking my nutrients etc. on The Daily Plate, and I've noticed if I don't really make an effort to consume protein, I don't get much. I don't drink much milk, and I don't eat much cheese. I used to not eat eggs either but now I do egg beaters (I'd prefer, ethically speaking, true cage-free eggs, but that's another topic).

I also use textured vegetable protein, it's pretty versatile and has a long shelf life.

Same as everyone else:
  • chicken, lots and lots of chicken
  • fish
  • pork tenderloin
  • turkey sausage
  • ground turkey, lean ground beef, ground pork
  • bacon and turkey bacon
  • lean deli meats
  • canned tuna and salmon
  • sardines
  • Greek yogurt
  • cottage cheese
  • reduced fat cheese
  • eggs, egg whites, and egg beaters
  • egg white salad (Trader Joe's sells it in three flavors)
  • tofu
  • flax seed bread
  • multi-grain cereal (similar to oatmeal but a little higher in protein)
  • SnacLite Power PB
  • La Tortilla Wraps
  • beans

Just recently I've added Textured Vegetable Protein to the mix.

I have just started using some whey protein added to yogurt, shakes iced coffee. I am new at the calorie counting and trying to balance all the carb, protein, and fats to a healthy ratio. I first started using the South Beach diet and kind of start my menu off that way. Each review of the day, I learn from my menu.

Vladadog 08-13-2008 10:37 PM

whey protein in iced coffee.... oooh girl, you may be on to something there. I'll have to give that a try!

InWonderland 08-24-2008 04:57 PM

Turkey/chicken (especially ground in chili, made into burgers, etc.), frozen pre-cooked shrimp, fake crabmeat (kinda carby but I love it), eggs, pb, veggie burgers, black beans

CreatingANewMe 08-26-2008 04:09 PM

Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Milk, Fish

zenor77 08-26-2008 04:38 PM

Tofu, yogurt, beans, eggs, nuts, whole grains, cheese. I also eat fish occasionally.

Most foods have some protein in them, even veggies. In fact, if you eat a variety of foods and enough of them, it's nearly impossible to not get enough protein. Now, before anyone gets on my case when I say "enough", I mean for basic body function. Besides, most Americans eat too much protein. If you are getting 10-20% of your calories from protein you are getting enough. I've never seen my number drop below 10%, ever. I rarely eat meat.

That being said, everyone's body is different, so if you feel better eating more protein then that, by all means go for it.
