Hair loss?

  • After I started calorie counting my hair starting falling out. NOW I can actually see my scalp and theres balding spots. Has anybody else dealt with this? I stay between 1200-1500 calories a day, I have vitamins for hair and nails but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any advice?
  • I doubt it's the dieting. It's probably just a coincidence. See a doctor. He'll tell you what's up.
  • Lots of things could be causing it. Too much of certain vitamins (e.g. A) can cause that. Not enough protein could cause that. The list goes on. I agree that you should check with your doctor--and tell him or her what you've been eating, supplements you're taking, etc.

  • Well I have always had thin hair and the doctor said it was because of dry scalp, blah blah blah. Its just so much worse now that I started dieting.
  • That happens to me when I'm losing weigh to fast. Once I get to a stable weigh it starts to grow back (I have thin hair too). Make sure your getting enough protein. Omega's are good too. I would also suggest talking to your doctor, maybe there's something else going on.

  • What is your fat intake like, currently, on average? Sometimes if you eat too LITTLE fat or protein, it can cause issues with hair loss, etc.

This is why it is important not to just follow a low calorie diet, but to be careful about WHAT is in that low calorie diet.

When the low fat/nonfat craze of the early 90's hit...hair loss was a big side effect, etc.
  • CALORIES CARBS FAT PROTEIN 970 85 25 65
  • Oh and I had more calories then that.... I had a snack (YOGURT) after I shut the computer down and it 110 calories
  • Hmmm...maybe up your fat intake a little. For easy math reference, eating 30% of your calories from fat equals about 3 grams of fat per 100 calories. So, if you eat 1500 calories, you would want about 45 grams of fat. If you eat 1200 calories, you would want about 36.

Some people are not as sensitive to eating very low fat, but I am one of them. If I let me fat intake get to low, it affects my hair and nails. I have to make sure that I eat at least 30 grams a day. One of the ways that I have been doing this, is by eating 1 oz. of almonds (or similar) a day, or olive oil, or a serving of nut butter.
  • Thank you so much!!!! I'll try to get myself together on all of this info lol I'm still trying to get used to tracking all of the calories and now getting in to the fat/carbs etc.
