scales
so when do people weigh themselves? and how??
my scales are digital, but i always get a different result. i do it at the same time, morning-naked, but if i stand on it 3 times, in the same place i start off very low in weight, and slowely gain a few pounds... weird? what do you guys do? do u take only one weighing? do u get the same result each time? do u think i need new scales lol? |
I take mine 3 times and generally go with the lowest weight! Mine usually only fluctuates by 1.5 lbs.
|
My scale is possessed! I just started back on the calorie counting myself but in the past I weighed everyday to basically keep myself in check and remind myself that everything I put in my mouth would have some effect on that number. I would usually weigh until I get the exact number twice. Mine is digital also with the body fat thingy on it (total waste though cause theres no way it can tell me how much body fat I have) I think it's time I get rid of it and get just a basic scale..I had one years ago and it was never as wishy washy as this thing is. LOL
|
I also have a digital scale that also will give me different weights if I step on it three different times in a row, and also also also the first one is usually the lowest. The lowest one or not, I tend to stick with whatever the first result says.
You probably need new scales and the same goes for me too :faint: |
lol well if i do go by the first result then this morning i had lost 5lbs over night, but its went up by 2 then another 2 each time i weighed, HOW FUSTRATING!
|
Chickies, stop jumping on and off the scales! :drill: For heavens sake, you look like a bunch of jack-in-the-boxes!
Weigh ONE TIME, in the morning, after you have pee'd, wearing the same clothes each time (or no clothes), with the scale in the same place. That is IT! Do not keep trying to get a better reading, or weighing several times a day, or any of that silliness! For even better results, record your weight on the same day every week. Weight goes up and down during the day naturally, and no scale is completely accurate. If your scale seems completely wrong, it may need new batteries (if it's digital) or you may need a new scale. But enough of this hopping business! Jay |
LOL JayEll.....I'm a former Jack-in-the-box weigher. :joker:
But to answer your question Free- I do my official weigh in on Sunday morning after I've done my bathroom stuff, and I weigh in naked. I also strive to weigh in at the same time each time. I take whatever number I see and go with it. Also my scale is digital and I try to replace the batteries every 3-4 months since my BF weighs himself everyday and also it has a cool blue led screen, which I'm sure sucks up some of the life of the scale. So you might need new batteries. :smug: |
Hello, I'm Angela and I'm a jack in the box LOL!!!!
Seriously though I am. Try this one. Step on the scale with your left foot first then try it again with your right foot first ..... different? It's friggin mindboggling isn't it. I weigh everyday but I only log fridays. It is, what it is, first reading on fridays. |
This has been a real issue for me.. Truth be told I allow the scale to effect my mood for the whole day. There have even been days where I don't like the number and I don't go into work because I feel so depressed I want to sleep all day! It's pretty bad I know, as I do have a real issue with my self image. But I am going to start weighing myself only once a week. I think its best for everyone, because weight fluctuates so much.
|
Yeah, well my digital scale has brand new batteries and it still weighs me differently every time. So I slid the scale under the cabinet and put a sign on it that reads "Don't even think about it!" and then my next weigh in date, which is Jan 30th.
Today I fit into smaller jeans AND I can actually sit down in them. That's all that matters. |
I weigh myself most mornings, naked, and after bathroom business. I have an old fashioned analog dial-type scale. Digitals are inconsistent unless you buy the top of the line (can we say expensive!) At least that's been my experience.
|
I weigh every Wednesday morning and am always terrified to do so. So I do it fast and get outta there as quickly as possible!
|
Every single morning, nude, after i've peed.
|
i weigh in every monday morning. I used to weigh in everyday, but i became way too obsessive about it, and was letting the numbers effect my day. So, now its only once a week. I use a digital too, and it also gives me slightly different numbers, and this is if i weigh myself seconds apart. I weigh myself 3x, up and off, up and off the scale, and get the average. yeah, that way i dont get the lowest or the highest number. I feel that this way im not lying to myself about losing weight or gaining weight.
|
obsessed
True obsession is when you weigh yourself in the morning before you pee, after you pee, after you eat to see how much your food weighed, later in the day to see if you lost the weight your food weighed, and again before you go to bed so that you can see how much you lose while you sleep LOL. O.K. that WAS me.:o But no more. Hopefully I'm a mature weigher now and I only weigh once a day, naked in the morning, digital scale, and I only weigh once and stick with that number! Jackie

This is a strange confession, but I was watching "Bridezilla" one evening and the bride in question was desperate to lose weight before her wedding. She and her mom went out to eat in a diner and the bride actually brought her scale along. I kid you not, she weighed herself before she ate and then directly afterwards and then huffed about having "gained a pound" over lunch. :dizzy:

Can anyone suggest a good scale? and which is better digital or the other?
|
good scales
The best ones are the old kind that they used in Doc's offices. I don't like digitals. I don't like digital Blood Pressure cuffs either. We had an EXPENSIVE digital scale at work the kind you can use a wheelchair with. I don't know how much it was probably close to 5 grand. It was a piece of crap, and worse if the weight was off you had to go through all this stuff ( usually over a screwey reading) The hand weight scales you can adjust them which is nice and unless they're dropped or rusty they work great. I have no idea where to get them though or how much they are but if you want accurate thats my 2 cents worth.

Geez, I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing OCD with my scale! I keep telling myself I am only going to weigh once a week..... but I just can't. I even put it up and away where it is difficult to get to. Next up, I'll have to get my hubby to hide it from me! I have started only recording it once a week so I guess that's an improvement.
Yes- I constantly get different readings up to 3 lbs different. And yes, they typically start out low and get higher. BOO. Also in the market for a new scale so I'll be interested to see if anyone else has feedback in regards to a specific kind to get. |
hello i use a Taylor 5582 Wireless Body Fat Analyzer Scale. i really like it. i did weigh myself three times this morning and i got the same thing all three times. here is some specs on it. i did look in stores for it with not alot of luck but did get it off ebay really cheep and was new still in box.

I too am OCD, I have a 5 or 6 year old Taylor that I was convinced was off, so I bought a new one, a WW scale. Both give almost identical readings (the WW is a bit different since it reads to 1/10th of a pound and the Taylor does 1/2 pound increments).
Both scales are reliable, since they're giving the same weights, and I'm now a happy weigher! Both were at or under $30.00. The Taylor sometimes annoys me because I live in a very old drafty cold house (I love it) and when the temperatures are lower it needs to be warmed up or it won't work- I get a 'lo' message if it's too cold and I know it's not talking about my weight! That's the big other reason why I wanted a new one. I must look like a double fool in the mornings shivering, stark naked and holding that scale up to a heating vent. |
I have a WW scale too. It measures to 1/10th of a pound and is very reliable. I get the same number each time I step on it (well, in a row. Unfortunately, it still shows fluctuations throughout the day. :) )

I do tend to weigh every day, once in the morning... after said activity lol. I find the fluctuations help keep me on track (if i'm up a couple lbs i know i didn't do so well on my sodium intake, and i'll keep a better eye on it.. i tend to suck up water weight quickly) |
I work on Sundays at a Exercise Facility. I keep the nursery, but get to work out for free by working one day a week. Anyways I weigh on their scales every Sunday, because their scales seems more acurate than mine.
|
Ooops, I never even thought about weighing myself more than once! And I won't start now :) Is this normal?
I have a digital too. And I can go entire weeks without weighing, but now I'm on a challenge so I just do it to keep track. I always "look" at the way I feel in my clothes, not at the weight. |
UPDATE!
Wednesday is my weighing day anyway, so I went and did the deed. Girls, it looks like I have the best digital scale around, because it showed the same weight (194.9) 3 times in a row. It's the WW scale they have now at Costco. Great for me!!! More than 3 pounds in a week! And I'm also at my TOM, and I retain a ton of water (that's why I didn't weigh early in the morning - I thought I should try in 2 days). |
LOL! I have a digital scale that does the same thing.
What I have found is mine often does the same readings if I put my feet apart towards the edges. I can get off and on and it always reads the same. If I stand with my feet in the center I usually weigh a couple pounds less but I can never get the same reading twice. It widely flies all over the place by as much as 20 lbs. I can't see that as accurate at all. So this week I faced it. If I want a true reading I need to see that little higher weight and face the fact. Now this may not be true for everyone else scale but it is for mine. The good news is I faced the fact and I am down 2 lbs this week. So, I know its really 2 lbs that I have lost. |
LOL - Tomorrow morning I will be weighing in with 10 different foot positions just to see what the scale says.
|
I have a digital scale, too. I thought I was the only one with a nutty scale! I try to weigh myself once a week or less, because I see it affects me when the numbers are higher than they are supposed to be. This morning I weighed myself and it showed a huge loss. I couldn't believe it, so I hopped on again and it showed a 5 lb. gain. Huh? I got on it one more time and it said I plateaued. I figured it must be the battery, so I bought a new one. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
|
This mature weigher let the scale impact her so much that she has put it away. I've been sticking 100% to plan since January 1 and the flucutating scale was freaking me out. I'm peri-menopause so I really only show a weight loss maybe two weeks out of each cycle. Using the scale was making me really depressed and I was not enjoying the small day to day successes of eating on plan and excercising. I might hop on in a few months if I see a big difference in how I'm looking but right now...I'm scared that not seeing a loss every week after working so darn hard will throw me off.
|
mature weigher lol! i am with you there. I am 49 and holding and my weight is wacky. You have a good idea, I think I'll put mine in the basement and step on it once a month. The only concern I have it that I won't know if what I am doing isn't working so I may do every 2 weeks. I admit to being addicted to my scale. When I was doing Medifast (last month) I lived and died by it because the program was so hard and I wasn't seeing great results. On a healthy eating plan it's not so bad if it doesn't move down every day or two. :p

I have this scale too. LOVE it. It always seems to be pretty "on." ...I weigh myself randomly really, but my official weigh in is on Tuesdays at about 5:15pm. I do this at Mayo Clinic with my trainers... I've found that the scale I have at home is almost perfectly accurate. I can step on and off and get the same number each time. I can shower, get back on it...and still get the same number--down to the tenth of a pound even! I recommend this one. No idea where it came from though, I think my grandparents got it at Sam's Club probably... |
I am absolutely obsessed with my scale. I hate it, I knew I shouldn't have bought it but I wanted to have a measure of how I was doing. But it seems everytime I am in the bathroom I jump on it...even though I know I get the best reading in the morning after a shower. Ah, free me from this obsession!
|
I have an analog that's quite old and therefore probably quite inaccurate. I plan to get a new digital one when I, you know, have time.
I weigh myself on Tuesday mornings after the bathroom, before breakfast. |
I have a health-o-meter digital. $30 at wally world and weighs in .5 lb increments. I have always liked these scales and they generally rank well in Consumer Reports. That said, I have to line it up along the same 2 grout lines on my tile floor, and stand on it with my toes just touching the seam between the foot pad and metal side, and make sure my calves are just touching. Then I get mostly the same weight over and over.
Can you say OCD? LOL I have recently stopped updating my tickers daily, only weekly will I report my weight, but I weigh in every day to remind myself what my goals are. Great thread! |
I have a health-o-meter scale and it seems to be pretty accurate. At first I would weigh myself three times in a row just to make sure the readings were the same. I have stopped doing that now since it was always the same. The only time I re-weigh is if i forget the number before I log it. Mine has a body fat analyzer and that seems to be all over the place. Anyone else notice this with the body fat analyzers?
I used to not weigh at all when I dieted, I just looked for differences in my clothing. Now I am weighing every morning and it seems to be keeping me focused. |
That Darn Scale!
OMG! That's me! I thought I was the only obsessive person alive. I have been trying my best to stay off the scale except for my once a week weigh-in because that darn little number messes with my head . I never realized that a digital scale will give you different readings every time. I'll need to investigate this scientific phenomenon further.

THE Scale To Buy
Recently, we realized we were without a scale and happened to find a digital one on clearance at Wal-Mart. I hopped on and it said I weighed 124 pounds - probably about 70 pounds less than I did! I told DH we were buying it! Of course, we didn't. Soon after that, I found a SOLID old scale at an estate sale. That thing is one heavy mug! It will vary my weight a pound or so.
I generally weigh myself first thing in the morning before drinking or eating anything, but after going to the restroom. I figure that gives me the most consistent reading. For curiosity, I have gotten on the scale at other times of day and it can be many pounds difference! But, I know that and just weigh those times to see how much they vary. I also don't fret about daily variations in my weight too much. I know that will happen, too. In fact, the last two times I was up a pound, I was down TWO the next day! :) |
