Diet Soda Question...
Hi I've just started counting calories and I've always wondered about diet sodas...although they have no calories I've heard that they should be omitted from your diet and they inhibit weight loss...something about tricking your body into thinking it's sugar? Just wondering if there's any truth to this?! How do you all feel about diet sodas if you're still getting your daily water intake???
Thanks all xoxo |
I drank diet soda all the while I was losing my weight and still drink 1 - 2 cans a day. So I guess it didn't slow my weight loss down! Some people feel that diet soda doesn't work for them -- others don't have a problem. The best thing to do is experiment and see if and how they affect you.

Me too, I have a diet Dr. pepper right now. I also drink a lot of crystal light, it all helps with the water count. The crystal light not the soda. I don't count soda in my daily intake of water.
Giving up sugar soda will get rid of a ton of calories, BUT if you can go cold turkey and give up soda all together, that shouldn't be too bad. Seltzer is good too. |
I know that some studies show that diet sodas increase your desire for sweets but for me, personally, that hasn't been the case. If anything, they give me a zero calorie way to have something sweet so I don't feel deprived of anything. I've lost 84 pounds in about 5 months so I don't think it's slowing me down any.
Some people will tell you that the sodium in diet soda will make you retain water but all you have to do is read the label to see that is not true. The can of caffeine free diet pepsi that I'm drinking right now has only 35 mg. of sodium. It's less than 1% of your RDA for sodium. That is virtually nothing and certainly not enough to effect whether you retain water. If you want to give them up, go ahead. But don't feel like you have to in order to lose successfully. |
Thanks for the replies....it really helps! I drink lots of water but I like soda and juices lots too so knowing that I can still have diet soda is great because I have to reduce my juice intake b/c of the cals! Thanks again and great job with all your loss!

If you love juice but hate the calories, try a little bit of juice (like 2 oz or so) and fill your glass up with Sprite Zero or Diet 7Up. You get the juice taste without nearly as many calories. :)

I pretty much quite diet soda because of the aspartame. Then I discovered Diet Rite. It's made with Splenda & has no caffeine. However, it's just too sweet.
Do any of you have problems with aspartame? I'm not allergic to it. I just heard and read too many negative things about it. I do miss soda,,,,,, |
CBMare - if you can find them, you can try PepsiOne and Diet Coke with Splenda. Both are aspartame free and not nearly as sweet as Diet Rite.
PepsiOne is a lot easier to find than Diet Coke with Splenda, though I prefer the diet coke's taste. I know this because aspartame makes me incredibly, violently ill. I think I'm just very sensitive to it. |

Coke Zero is made with Splenda (I think) :)

My can of Coke Zero says it's made with aspartame (Equal) but it's possible that there are different formulations in different areas of the country. Diet Coke with Splenda is readily available here, but I've never seen a caffeine free version.

I've also cut way back on diet soda's due to the bad things I've read about aspartamine.
I actually tried to go cold-turkey a few weeks ago and intended to have NO Diet Coke's (I don't like Diet Pepsi's either cbmare, I mean, why bother?), but I found myself hunting down anything sweet to take its place. Since I do have a sweet tooth, and if one eats too much dark chocolate (even though it IS good for you), one ends up eating too many calories... So far, I've been too lazy to investigate reasonable sweet item calorie options. :dizzy: (INSERT: I have to confess, I've been known to go into the kitchen and grab a few [SMALL] handfulls of chocolate chips from time to time.) So, I had to ask myself, "Self, which is worse? Eating sweetening things and sabotaging your efforts, or allow yourself a diet drink once or twice a week?"...so I've been averaging about 2 diet drinks a week. Also, I got some sugar free gum, which most likely has aspartamine in it (I need to check)...which kind of defeats the purpose of avoiding aspartamine. I may try Diet Rite or one sweetened with Spenda. Thanks for the suggestions! :D Cheree Hey, I just found the additional Smilies!!! :joker: |
Diet Rite
I think Diet Rite sodas have Splenda
