Water weirdness/thirst issues

  • Water, water everywhere and many drops to drink... I am trying to be vigilant about drinking water--this is a new thing for me as I am a Diet Coke fiend. Since I started, I've noticed that drinking water often makes me feel hungrier and sometimes even a bit nauseated/crampy. Is this psychosomatic? Is my body just adjusting to the new intake? This happens at varying temperatures--from ice water to cold to slightly above room temperature. Does anyone else find that water doesn't always sit well with them/makes them feel a bit off and/or hungrier?

Also, starting since last night, I have been constantly thirsty. It's almost a cotton-mouth feeling (though I do not actually have a dry mouth). I can't imagine it is because I am dehydrated--I've had 96 ounces of water since arriving at work this morning (so over the course of about 6-7 hours) and am considering having more because I am so fricking thirsty.

In the interest of full disclosure, I still drink diet sodas--probably 3 or so a day, though I am slowly cutting down (I'll get hideous headaches if I go cold turkey) and I am a smoker, though I've only had two cigarettes today.

I was having trouble sleeping last night, so I took a couple of sleeping pills... Maybe that could be playing into it? I know constant thirst is a symptom of diabetes, but I was good there as of my last check-up and this really just seemed to start within the past 18 hours or so.
  • When I first started drinking just water I was thirsty all the time. Now 2 months later this has subsided a bit. Someone told me that in the beginning of drinking just water your body will feel more thirsty or dehydrated as it re-balances its water levels inside your body. Once the levels balance out you will feel less thirsty and drink more normally.
  • Fascinating. Thanks much!
  • Hey there! I'm not a doctor or nurse, but I think it's just your body adjusting to the changes you've thrown at it. Not to worry! Give it some time--keep drinking enough water (8 to 10 8-oz. glasses is enough) and following your program... see where it leads!
