Diet Plateau

  • I've been reading up on dieting plateaus. Has anyone tried eating more for a day or two to trick your body into letting go of the weight? When I say more, I mean eating what you want within reason. I was thinking of trying this. I have already tried lowering my calories more and increasing my exercise, both with no success. I should state that the plateau has been going on for three weeks.
  • I would say that it's worth a try, as long as you don't think that eating "what you want" will set off cravings and make it too difficult to get back on track when it's time to lower the calories again. That's always my problem; there are just some foods that are triggers for me, and that's all there is to it.
  • have you tried drinking a diet juice, you do it for 2 days, don't eat any fruits, breads, rice, milk, no carbs!!! i get it at walmart for 14.95, it will flush your system and is great to bust your metabolism!!! try it, I'm on the LA Weight loss plan and so far is has work, you don't mentioned how long you have een on your diet, so maybe this will help, good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Try putting calorie cycling in the search here. It is advocated by some of the best.
  • Well, ive been stuck on a plauteau for 5 months now (uurrrggg). Ive kinda gotten off my diet for the past couple dayz, but tomorrow i start up again so well see if i loose any weight within the next week. If you happen to try it and it works for you pleeze write about it in this topic or PM me cuz id really like to know if it works or not.
  • I started my lifestlye change in Jun 2006 and weighed 231. I was doing body for life so I was working out too. One day a week I would eat anything I wanted (that would be our mexican eat out night where I would have a mexican version of chicken nachos). I lost consistently until Thanksgiving (weight 188) when I got off track working out less and having a lot more eat anything I want days. This pretty much lasted until January first (weighed 191) when I started back on watching what I eat. I am currently 188 again and just started this week really focusing on working out again (I did go between Novemeber and January but only 2-3 days a week and my time spent there seemed to be getting less and less). I plan on having an eat anything I want day again but I think this time I will try to do it once every two week. I must say I reaaly think that the reason I have stuck with my new lifestyle is because I have planned eat anything I want day that I look forward to and when I do have them I do not feel like I cheated or that I blew anything because it was planned. It totally helps to keep my additude positive. Hope that what ever you chose to do that it works for you because in the end that is what it is all about. Finding what will work for you.

Sorry, but I don't recommend this at all. All it is pretty much, is consuming only about 400 calories per day in watered down juice...not healthy at all. You do not lose any "fat" you lose water weight, and you will be lighter because after two days of no food, your intestinal tract is holding less.

I also don't understand the "no carbs" thing with this...because juice IS a carb.
  • I would also like to add that a plateau of three weeks is VERY normal. How long has it been since you changed your calories/increased your exercise? (Since the plateau has only been for three weeks.)
  • Have you really evaluated what you're eating? I did recently and discovered that my plateau was because I'm eating far more calories than I realized! I shoot for 1200-1400 per day but am coming in around 1800 on weekdays and up to 2500 on weekends! No wonder I'm not losing! Thankfully I haven't gained in the past 5 weeks!!!

I sat down and put together a 2 week menu that should keep me closer to 1400 calories per day. Yesterday, I was close, but still a little high. I don't like diets that tell me what to eat at each meal, but if I figure out my own meal plan, I am much better at sticking to it (I think it is the control freak in me--No one tells ME what to do!!!).
  • I dont eat whatever I want. I pretend I am done losing weight and move into maintenance mode for 2-3 weeks increasing calories by 100-250/day. Then I go back to the diet mode.

It takes longer but it seems to work very well and gives me an opportunity to practice maintenance which is almost harder than dieting.

I only do this if I am stuck on a hard plateau and always try this before I try dropping my calories further.
  • Thanks for all your input ladies! I don't know if the plateau is over, but I finally dropped a pound after three weeks of nothing. I'd been counting calories for over five months now, with a steady weight loss the whole time, so I knew a plateau would eventually happen. Earlier I had decreased my calories and increased my exercise with no change in results. I don't know if the eating a higher amount of calories for a few days caused the change, but the scale did finally move today.
