I am not sure if this is the right place to post this or not, it is my first time posting a new message...
My question is this, I have lost 75lbs since September of last year. My only complaint about this weightloss is that I seem to always, always, always be cold. Often, it is an uncomfortable cold, like a feeling of being chilled to the bone. I eat between 1200 and 1600 calories per day, as I would like to still lose about ten more pounds. I drink at least a gallon of water a day. I know when I was overweight I was often hot and I realize that in losing the fat I have lost a lot of "insulation", but this is ridiculous. Unless I am outside basking in the sun in 80 degree weather, I have to have on long sleeves under a sweater - in the summer. Any thoughts on what causes this and what I can do to change it? |
I'm in the same boat....I wear sweaters unless it's like 80 degrees or more. A small price to pay to look great even in sweaters if ya ask me. :D

I know, and I really feel silly complaining, but sometimes it is actually uncomfortable and I HATE being the girly-girly girl shivering with my sweater all the time.
I just thought I might be low on some type of nutrient or something. |

Before, when I lost a lot of weight, I was always cold, too. And now that I've only lost about 40 pounds, I am already freezing all the time!

I have the exact same experience. Air conditioning really kills me. I keep a sweater in the car all the time and wear socks around the house. I really hustle through the freezer/refrigerated section of the grocery store! I don't remember being so painfully cold all the time before the weight loss.

Oh yes, I'm still wearing my winter coat, and dread to think how cold I'll find it when we actually go back to winter!

FWIW: the first year I was freezing. The second year it was better. I'm still a little on cold side, but nothing like it was. I don't know if that is because I got used to it, or somehow my body made some thermal adjustments.

It is summer and I still am wearing socks to bed, my feet are always freezing now. I use to wear a light jacket in the winter and it was open. This past winter I couldn't get warm enough. In the house I'm cold. I do find now that if I'm in the sun I get too hot.. I think the fat protected me from the sun ;) I don't know lol. My body temperature is screwed up.

I'm not "reduced obese" but I've always been cold, maybe because i have anemia. But the funny thing is that I'm a lot less cold (and less tired) now that I excercise more. I guess my metabolism was low, and is stoked up a bit by the excercise. Rabbit |
Before losing weight, I used to freeze everyone else in my house. Now they complain that I keep it too warm. I am cold all the time. I have noticed that I can go outside and do yard work in 100 degree heat and it doesn't bother me. Before, I couldn't even go get the mail when it was that hot. I used to keep thermostat at 68 degrees winter or summer. Now I need it at least 76 to even feel remotely comfortable. I get fully dressed as soon as I get up, otherwise I am cold.

Pregnancy has turned me into a furnace, but usually, when not pregnant I am freezing ALL the time!!
I think with me it is a mix of the weight-loss and of genetics. My dad is cold all the time and so is his mom. My brother is also cold all the time (we think it is circulation issues). Take care! Ali |
An odd thing I've noticed: eating meaty things (especially tuna) actually makes me warmer. An hour after tuna-and-crackers is about the only time my hands aren't cold!
Then again, I've always been cold. I'm not sure if the always-cold and the newly-cold are different. -Amy |
I find it ironic that at over 210 pounds I was more likely to get hypothermia and at my weight now I shake like a leaf when it drops below 60 degrees. It's good to know that it's just the way it is and not a sign of a defficiency or anything.

This is CRAZY!!! I can't get warm!!! I'm sitting here in layers and I'm still cold!! The only time I was warm today was when I was in 101 degree weather in a SWEATER. I nearly fell asleep outside. It was such a relief. I know I've always had a low cold tolerance (even when I was really heavy), but this is insanity. It's gotten worse. Do you guys think this could be a symptom of an illness or just part of the slowing down of my metabolism?

You must be the envy of everyone around you if you can still keep cool in this heat! :hot: I'm guessing it's the combined effects of losing your insulation and lowered metabolism, but a thyroid problem can make you feel cold all the time too. Have you had your TSH tested lately (or ever?)
Over the past five years, my body seems to have adapted to the weight loss and I'm not nearly as cold as I was right after I lost the weight. Darn it! :lol: |

It's always a good idea to get your thyroid tested. It's kind of scary how many women develop thyroid problems.
I've become one of those people who bring sweaters to restaurants and movies in the middle of the summer when it's 100 degrees outside. I can't deal with the air conditioning! And the other thing I have a hard time with is shopping in the frozen food aisle at the grocery store--it's so cold! I even brought a light sweatshirt into the store one time when I knew I'd be in the frozen food section. Felt silly, but at least I was warm. :) |
I haven't got my thyroid checked ever. But if I had hypothyroidism, wouldn't I struggle to lose weight?
I actually can't stand the air conditioning either ~ everyone I know keeps their places freezing. I hope it gets better ~ weight loss does so many weird things to our bodies. I'm actually dreading the upcoming winter; it wasn't too bad this past winter because I was still over 200, but I can't imagine what it will be like this winter. I already bought a new wool coat, which I couldn't fit into when I bought it, but now I do :) Actually I bought another coat too ~ on clearance for $20!! I love off-season bargains. |
The symptoms of hypothyroidism can be subtle and vary from person to person, so I don't think it can be automatically ruled out just because you've been able to lose weight. And remember that weight loss itself (especially massive weight loss) can trigger some significant hormonal upheavals! Many hormones are stored in fat (especially in abdominal fat, which is why it's called toxic fat) and get dumped into your system when you start burning stored fat. I stopped having periods as soon as I started losing weight and boom, was in menopause at age 46. My doctor is certain it was due to a massive estrogen dump from the 122 pounds of lost fat totally disrupting my hormones.
Anyway, I had only vague symtoms of fatigue before I was diagnosed. Yeah, I was obese, but honestly -- I earned that the old-fashioned way by eating too much and not exercising. :o Being medicated didn't help with weight loss for the first six years until I made some drastic changes in how I was living my life. It might be worth checking out since it's a simple blood test. I agree with Sheila -- a shocking number of women have thyroid problems and don't even know it. |

I have the same freezing problem lately and I actually had blood drawn yesterday for a thyroid test (among other things). Apparently hypothyroidism can also lead to carpal tunnel and related problems, and I have had major problems with my wrists, so that's another contributing factor (and my thinning hair, which could be due to that, or the weight loss, or just genetics). I'm actually hoping I am hypothyroid because all the other stuff they are testing me for is a lot scarier!

:crossed: that it's nothing serious. The nice thing about being hypo is that you can fix it by popping a pill. Let us know what you find out, OK? :hug:

Thanks Meg. I got my results today and it turns out there is nothing wrong with me after all, other than tendonitis. No hypothyroid, no rheumatoid arthritis, no lupus, and no fibromyalgia. Phew! Apparently I am supposed to see a dermatologist about the hair, and count how many hairs come out of my head every day for four days and keep them in a baggie. Ew! But I guess I will just have to keep extra sweaters at the office, it must be due to the weight loss instead of something else. :^:

And good luck on counting your hairs - if it were me, I'd undoubtedly end up with a bag of cat hair (we have three cats) and get diagnosed with fleas or something. :lol: |
The "emergency hoodie" 's come out of the drawer for the first time this summer! BBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I could've done with it yesterday but I'd taken it home for the summer! :lol: Yesterday I wore 2 T-shirts. :doh:
Paperclippy - glad everything's ok. Counting hairs... :chin: Sounds, interesting ;) Just go for an OUTRAGEOUS wig and you'll be fine! Or shave it all off - I'm tempted to do that with mine anyways! :D |
