I forgot what I originally came to post....senior moment? :dunno:

I took a rest day today to try and get my knee back to normal...hopefully I can walk normally and get back to my workout tomorrow.

shaunarae2 01-03-2006 07:26 AM

Gina- Thanks for digging that up. That is exactly what I needed to hear. I think I may try the DVD today and add on cardio or another circuit if I still feel up to it. I will give you my opinion of the DVD vs. the book when done, but I won't be able to workout for almost 12 more hours! Gotta go to work!

ledom 01-03-2006 11:47 AM

week 10, day 2 done - enjoyed today's workout a lot

shaunarae2 01-03-2006 06:58 PM

Well, I did Jillian's Shape Up Front DVD today for the first time. I made it through the entire thing, but was too tired to "add on". She gets your heart rate up right at the beginning and keeps it there throughout the whole DVD. It is a very intense fast-paced workout. I forgot to wear my heart rate monitor, so I'm sad that I couldn't compare it to the book's workout. I feel like with the book, I can take the time to do the exercises at my pace with correct form. Sometimes on the DVD I felt like I was going to fast and sacrificing my form to keep up with the rest of the gang. I also have the flexibility to change weights out to maximize my sculpting when I do the book. There isn't time to do this with the DVD. I think I will stick with the circuit workouts from the book unless I am pressed for time. I can continue to do the Cardio Kickbox for cardio days though.

:o Holy crap i nearly killed myself last night. Had a blonde moment while i was working out doing "lateral raises while doing jumping jacks"... I tried to do it with the same size weights (7.5 kg) i would usually use...its freaking impossible! Maybe she should have said that i needed to reduce the amount of weight i was lifting!

Welcome to dork central!

chick_in_the_hat 01-03-2006 11:10 PM

Gina, queen of dorks....
Day 2 of Week 10 for me, too....I liked it, too - ledom!! I did cut it a little short - I didn't want my knee pain back.

shaunarae - I envision the trying to keep up thing if I was trying to follow a video. I find I still need more practice to feel more comfortable with my form. It's enough for me to be keeping my heart rate up without having to follow someone.

navynerd - I think the think that might have done something to my knee was when I thought I was being bright trying to do hip adductions (too big of a wuss to hold a sumo squat for a minute) at the same time as DB chest flys...I thought I was being brilliant at the time...:p

SmartButt 01-04-2006 11:56 AM

I usually use 3 lb weights when doing the raises/jumping jacks thing. You definitely shouldn't use anything too heavy, you're not trying to go for max. on those.

Chick - if it's any comfort, you should see how much pain Jillian herself is in after holding the sumo squat for an entire minute on the DVD! It's one of the few parts that makes me chuckle. (Other than the previously mentioned guy who's a little too excited to be exercising!)

I could only do 20 mins of the front workout yesterday but I did them at a much higher intensity than I have been. One problem I notice is when I start doing step plyos I feel like I'm getting shin splints. I wish I knew what I was doing wrong.

chick_in_the_hat 01-04-2006 11:01 PM

Jillian in the same pain as me? This alone is worth the price of the DVD.

You might try posting your shin splint question in the Ladies who lift forum - there are professional trainers (Meg & Mel the moderators) that give great advice in there.

I took a rest day - just dog walking for me...

kathyhegg 01-05-2006 05:49 AM

Week 1 day 1 done. Yeouch. I'm sore.

ledom 01-05-2006 06:18 PM

Kathy - well done. You have embarked on a wonderful plan.

Week 10, day 3 for me today. This week I feel myself really embracing the workouts. I am just ready for some good hard workouts and lots of sweat and I am getting it. Today, the one legged squats! I liked that. It was hard, but doable and I am enjoying the balance aspect. Very yogic. The 1 minute sumos. Lordy, the first one I can hold about 50 sec., before the ciricuit is over I am doing 4 15 sec. ones but I know I am building endurance on this one.

Holy crap, girl - I'm impressed...I can't hold them more than like 15 seconds...I usually start falling over.

I did the same workout today - I need a lot more practice on the balance stuff. I am really liking step plyos now - except for that I'm really noisy...:o

Oh well - the gym is full these days - I've taken to getting to work early to get to the gym by 4. That seems to work. I'm not a morning person - but I can manage a half an hour earlier...

How long does it take for the New Years Resolution types to burn out? Actually they are mostly just taking all the cardio machines - and filling up the classes...not to many extra people in the free weight zones...:D

kathyhegg 01-06-2006 06:38 AM

I am so sore today, I spent half of it in bed, does the pain ever go away?

Being very negative here, but I felt horrid all day after that work out. Is it worth doing while I'm so unfit and full of fat? Or should I work on the cardio for a while.

ledom 01-06-2006 07:34 AM

Oh Kathy, I'd stick with it. You might find ways to lower the intensity a bit and still get everything possible out of it. I am 52 and have some concerns about some of the high impact stuff and have found ways around it while maintaining elevated heart rate. When I first started I was especially concerned about my knees. Not just the jumping around, but all the squats and lunges. Know what? My knees have gotten so much stronger! Do I still get sore? You know, I missed a week and when I went back I got sore again but for the most part I have moved through that. For muscle soreness you might try taking glucosimine. It really works. Soreness will prevail for a couple weeks but you eventually move away from it being a bad sort of thing. You begin to almost crave that soreness because it means you are building those muscles.

As I have moved to almost 11 weeks of this workout I can honestly say it has not always been easy. It sometimes takes me 1 hr. 15 min., sometimes it just feels too hard and sometimes I just resent the time. It is getting better for me though. This week I have actually been looking forward to the workouts because of how they make me feel.

If you haven't already you should go back and read through the ask Jillian thread. She admits that even she hates to work out. Sometimes it is just a pain in the a$$, literally and figuratively, but the rewards are many if you stay the course.

You ask if it is worth it while you are still fat. I have been working out for a long time and this is the best fat blasting routine I have ever done. You bet it is worth it.

kathyhegg 01-06-2006 07:42 AM

Thanks Ledom, i appreciate the encouraging words. i'll try again tomorrow, this time with smaller weights.

SmartButt 01-06-2006 10:20 AM

Kathy - Look at it this way, all that pain means your muscles are building! I get very sore after workouts too (after the jumping jacks with weight raises I can barely straighten my arms out the next day) but I look at it like an ACCOMPLISHED soreness. It isn't that you are sore because you sat in one place too long - you are sore because you kicked some serious ***! Let that soreness make you feel proud and walk (or limp) a little taller knowing how hard you pushed yourself! :carrot:
