Jillian, I don't have your book yet (will have to wait until payday the last day of the month) but I've been following these threads. I'm sorry if this question is answered in your book but I'm wondering if you think medication can hinder weightloss? I'll lose six pounds and then gain them doing nothing different although since my hysterectomy in December - I'm stuck and the scale is not moving at all. I've been trying to lose weight for almost three years but in that time I was taking Prozac two weeks out of the month for PMS. About the time I stopped taking the Prozac, I have had two injections in my neck in the last year and half. I'm wondering if these things have messed up my metablism and what a person should do? When I stopped taking the birth control pill years and years ago, I gained weight. When I stopped taking Zoloft for depression for 9 months after having my daughter, I gained 30 pounds in 3 months. I took Allegra D for 9 months for unexplainable hives and gained weight after stopping that medication. I've been debating on whether or not I should have my Resting Metabalism tested (it's a lot of money and so I haven't had it done at this point).

Your book is on my list so if it's in there, I can wait until I get it.

Thank you so much for your wisdom, your teaching and taking the time to reach out to so many people through your book and your posts here. There are many, many diet books out there as every one knows, but you don't see too many of them reaching out even more like you are. Bless you.

Rachelle

Question about drinkies

Dear Jillian, you are SO my heroine. *hands you a trophy*

This morning I really didn't feel like going to the gym.. I mean, more than usual. Honestly I could have sworn that you were the other voice in my head and we were arguing all the way to the gym, as I dragged my feet up the stairs, and between sets for half the workout. Then I started thinking how gooood it was going to feel to be finished :) Sometimes it's just not easy. Luckily, getting results does not depend on feeling like doing it. It just depends on actually doing it, moody or not. Other days it just rocks from start to finish.

Anyway... the Australians here seem to have your book in the shops but I havn't seen it here. It's not like we are at the bottom of the world or anything! :p ok, we are, but so is Aus.

What is your take on alcohol? Is it ok, as long as it fits into the calorie limit? OR is it a no-no due to the metabolism stunting effect that it supposedly has?

One more question. When you got started on taking yourself from 'before' to 'now', how did it go? Did you just decide one day, do your research and then go like a rocket and get there in a few months?, or was it a bit stop-start, backward, forward, start, blow-it, restart, bomb-out, restart etc... as seems to be the case for so many of us.

Thankyou. I hope you realise how much we appreciate your time here and your bravery in posting your before pic. Mmm, that dress would not do anyone any favours. Whomever made you wear it was just mean!

Listen sister, we all have pictures in unfortunate dresses like that - I have been a bridesmaid for my four siblings numerous times (some multiple marriages). I agree with a previous poster, you were beautiful then, you are beautiful now. What makes you even more beautiful is the time and genuine caring and support you have shown to all of us. I wish I lived in LA and could hire you as my trainer!

Quite honestly, your picture hit home for me, because in your book you mention that your parents were going through an ugly divorce and you used food to comfort yourself (I am paraphrasing, forgive me if I am wrong). At 16 I experienced something similar, also the period in my life when my struggles with food began, so I see the sadness and hurt in that girl (ok, and the ugly dress) as I do in pictures of myself from that time in my life.

I also want to know, as sajadela asked, how did you go from before to after? Was it gradual or a sudden awakening one day? The reason I am asking is because I feel like I have taken it in stages (very LONG stages) and go two steps forward and one step back. You have been so honest all along, which is what I absolutely love about you, so I also would appreciate an answer to this question. Your honestly, from an LA living, ***-kicking diva has been such an amazing breath of fresh air, I look forward to more of it!

Hi Jillian!

I've been anxiously awaiting your book in the mail, and I finally received it and finished reading it yesterday!!! I really enjoyed reading it, and I am so excited to see you posting here in this forum--we greatly appreciate it!!!

I plan on rereading the science section of your book; however, I feel like I'm still at a loss for ideas for meals. I saw your sample menus you posted here, and I really liked having an example to look at; however, I'm unsure of substitutions. I think I'm a slow oxidizer, based on the tests in your book. What would you suggest as a substituition for a carb instead of oatmeal for breakfast? I'm sure oatmeal is probably the best for me to eat--maybe I can learn to like it; however, I have only been able to eat the kind of instant oatmeal that has the maple brown sugar flavoring already in it, and somehow I'm thinking that's not the type of oatmeal you were referring to! :lol:

I love watching you on BL, especially this second season! I'm looking forward to getting started on your program and getting this weight off; however, I'm a little nervous on planning my meals for my being a slow oxidizer. Would I be ok just using the recipies you have in your book, or are they geared to a specific type of oxidizer?

Thanks for all of your help!

Christy

Rachelle-I'm not Jillian but I am a doctor so I will try to answer your questions if you don't mind. Jillian can certainly add anything else she thinks is relevant. As for the antidepressants you took, Prozac typically does not make people gain weight and in fact when it first came out, family doctors were prescribing it as a weight loss agent. Zoloft tends to be what we call "weight neutral" meaning people neither gain nor lose on this medication. However, I have had a few people and I mean FEW swear to me that these medications made them gain weight. There are some psychiatric medications that really make people pack on pounds but these are not among them. As for the Allegra D-the "D" is Pseudofed which is what they make illegal crank out of. You've probably noticed that they've moved all the Sudafed behind the counter at your local drugstores and department stores. Most people feel hyper when they take Sudafed containing compounds and probably have some appetite suppression from it as well. I avoid the stuff because I can't sleep when I take it. It would not be surprising for you to gain weight when you stopped taking this medication.

As for the injections in your neck-I assume they were for pain. Most of those injections are a combination of a steroid (related to prednisone) and a local anesthetic (related to novocaine). Anyone who has ever taken prednisone can tell you (including my dog) that it makes you eat like a horse. There is more to it than that but I don't think you want all the details. Getting an injection is not as bad as taking it as a pill but most people do find they eat more and put on a few pounds and the more injections you get, the worse the weight gain problem. However, if you need the injections, you need to be aware that it is something you have to watch out for. I hope that is helpful.

Question for Jillian re:Cardio

Hi Jillian!

In my previous post, I asked a nutrition question, and this time I have an exercise question for you. I have read your book and the sections on cardio, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on steady state cardio vs. HIIT.

Thanks!

Christy

High Purine foods

First of all, like everyone else here, I thank you for all your effort to help us in our goals to become healthier people. :hug:

I am a fast oxidizer and had guessed it even before the test told me I was right. I'm a carb addict so I know that this will be difficult but I have so many health related goals that I will do what it takes.

My question is this: What OTHER options are there for high purine foods other than what is listed in the book? I have a blood clotting disorder and can not consume large amounts of vitamin K and pretty much just looking at the list nauseated me! I wouldn't be able to get any of those foods down. Suggestions?

Kristin

OzLoserToBe 11-15-2005 04:57 PM

I've made it to the short list of 200 for the Oz BL, that's kinda scary..

sidewalk = footpath
cantelope = rock melon
bangs = fringe
jello = jelly
jelly = jam
soda/pop = soft drink

You will be tested!!

Jen415 11-15-2005 05:26 PM

OZ that is great!! I read about this on the TBL Board.....keeping my fingers crossed for you!!

I can't believe that I didn't know that Jillian, THE JILLIAN has been posting on 3FC!!!!!!!!!!

JILLIAN! I just want to tell you what a source of inspiration you are! I became a certified personal trainer to try and overcome my "weight problem" (then I didn't really have one, at least not like I thought I did). I got discouraged and quit, quit smoking at the same time and with in a year I gained 40 pounds! Watching you gives me a lot of motivation. I have lost quite a bit so far and switched my major to Nutrition, which is what I always wanted to do but have felt too self conscious. I want to start 2006 not overweight (technically at 155 my BMI will be "normal") and spend the year getting in the shape to begin training for a fitness show. Your physique is one that I strive for! Just wanted to tell you that you're making such a difference just being you! I'm a huge fan!!!
