I was feeling quite lonely/sad again after work; there's something about the afternoon that isn't the best time for me. I did go out for a walk and then called an elder from a past job that I kept in touch with, which was nice for both of us. I felt better in the evening and I did eat any sweets over it. Today I'm also having a haircut (like gardenerjoy) then going to an outdoor craft/art festival, and may treat myself to a hotdog, I haven't had one in such a long time. And maybe see my widow friend tonight. I have got to make a meal plan this weekend too and get groceries. I love mornings, I always feel so much better!
Bill- of the things I miss about city living, street parking is not one of them. I think i've lost my ability to parallel park.
Karen- I'm not such an inspiration about getting things done It partly depends on my mood which seems to fluctuate. A list is always good to start with.
Maryann-very cool idea to use Monopoly, makes things much more concrete.
Penny-yay for on plan and smidges.

The hair appointment went well and I still made progress on the projects that have captured my attention at the moment -- follow-up from Thursday night's book selection meeting and writing a blog post about the Ratcliffe Highway Murders to publish in October as part of a month of macabre and spooky features to share.

We skipped Home Chef for several weeks in a row, but our repertoire is pretty limited, so it was nice to get a box yesterday. Last night's salmon dish was enough of a success that we'll try re-creating it on our own -- salmon with cherry chutney alongside roast potatoes and broccoli.

Good morning!

Yesterday was on plan and weight is down another smidge.

I procrastinated until 8 o'clock last night to make the ratatouille but it is done. I'll make some rice in the cooker and add some tofurky "chicken" for a yummy lunch today.

Have a good day, everyone!

Happy Saturday.

I am drinking fully decaffeinated Good Earth tea and have a gently cross wind blowing through the living room. High of 80 today. Just gorgeous. I had forgotten that people actually come to California for our weather. Last night we went to my School's football game. Two of my ex students are the stars. Sadly it was a blowout and we went down in defeat but I saw many of my kids and the weather was perfect. Happy Fall. Monopoly went well. The students were frustrated with the extra taxation in "Socialism" and rent control. They didn't like the "no fail" aspect. They want something in between "Capitalism" and it. They are not going to get it with the "Communism" version. We will debrief by comparing everything to our society today.

Food remain OP. Credit me for not going to "no sugar added froyo." Weight is down a smidge. I am going to the gym for the first time since Peru. No outdoor work to justify skipping. I added a super cool Wind Spinner to the front yard following my rule to add color that I can't kill.

Haircuts abound, I guess. My is as about as short as it can get without a buzz. No comes the week of growing in before I am comfortable again.
Penny: I am going to do a big batch of cooking. Breakfast sandwiches. My neighbor brought over packs of English muffins. He works as at a bakery. I am going to turn twelve of them into freezer friendly morning treats for DH.
BBE: DH just brought home a bucket of heirloom tomatoes from a farmer buddy. Tomatoes will be our side dish for sometime to come.

Thumbs up Sunday - International Talk Like a Pirate Day (since 1995, Albany, Oregon)

Diet Coaches/Buddies - Ahoy, me hearties! Our brains need lighter fare right now. I'm celebrating the successful return to earth of the four civilian astronauts after three days in orbit. Celebrating, but jealous. That was so easy; I could do that. Might just have to consider using a spare $200 million to give myself and three friends a joy ride. DW suggests that a Tesla Model 3 is more realistic but who needs realism. Excitement was dropping DW off at a city sponsored shredding truck. She'd brought a magazine along with her backpack of old banking statements but the line moved quickly. She wanted to walk home since she'd cover a route that she hadn't walked for years. Came upon a turkey blocking a car in the road. Behind the car a guy on a motorcycle kept beeping his horn. Another guy on the sidewalk yelled out, "There's a turkey you stupid jerk." Motorcycle guy drops the kickstand and races over to the sidewalk guy. They go chest to chest yelling at each other. The turkey slowly, at its own pace, finishes crossing the road. The car moves on. The two guys keep yelling. The motorcycle remains in the street. DW decides to continue her walk home so we don't know how the story ends. My guess is that it's just another symptom of the tensions of pandemic isolation.

Eating was on plan with no daytime snacks, CREDIT moi. Dinner was grilled salmon and grilled asparagus with a garden-grown tomato and cuke salad enjoyed on the patio. Talking into the dark - which wasn't hard since dark arrives a tad earlier and earlier. "You know we're stretching this summer thing," DW suggested.

Joy (gardenerjoy) - Does that ever sound yummy, "salmon with cherry chutney alongside roast potatoes and broccoli." Hadn't thought of cherry chutney on salmon.

maryann - LOL at "to add color that I can't kill." Kudos for avoiding the "no sugar added froyo." Methinks it's neat that your kids are rebelling about the laws you made.

curlyjax - Yay for a haircut and an outdoor craft/art festival - good events in life.

Penny. - I can guess what "tofurky chicken" is made of, but can't guess what taste it's imitating. Perhaps I'm confusing it with turducken which might be harder to make vegan.

I had a successful haircut yesterday, and enjoyed a really good hotdog. It was worth every bite. The art/craft show was nice, but I should have called a friend to go, it wasn't so fun by myself. I did refrain from buying anything, and instead bought some good quality inserts for my shoes. Eating in general was pretty bad yesterday but I went shopping and have a plan now for the rest of the week. I ended up hanging out with my widow friend and helping a bit with her starting to clean out her moms house which has a ton of stuff. Then we went to feed the cat of her friend, and I was struck by the contrast of how uncluttered and peaceful his place was. It does encourage me to keep going with clearing out.
We ended up eating too much but I did bring some leftovers too. Today I'm skipping church and need to mow more of the lawn and get some other things done.

I had achy joints yesterday following a long walk the day before, plus the flu shot yesterday morning, plus an hour's vigil standing on concrete. A minimal amount of exercise seemed appropriate. That seemed to work and I'm ready to return to a more usual amount of exercise today.

DH turned 65 this year and got his first HD version of the flu shot. He woke up with muscle aches all over. He's going to attempt to do at least a little PT. We're finding it hard to keep him consistent because so many things impact his ability and motivation, including the PT itself which can leave him so beat-up that he's not willing to do it again for a day or two. Oh well. We'll keep experimenting until we figure out what works best for him. Here's my reminder that it may be something different than what the PTs suggest and it will almost certainly be something different than what works best for me.

Good morning!

Yesterday was on plan and weight came down a microsmidge.

The rain was so heavy it woke me up in the middle of the night. I had to get up and look out the window and it was pounding! We don't get that here often- it's usually pretty light, so that was exciting. It's supposed to return to sunny days this week so I will use that time to put away the deck cushions and umbrellas. Clean up.

Bill, tofurky is just a brand of fake meat products.

Have a great Sunday, everyone!

Good Morning, Coaches.

Happy Sunday.

Day was technically OP but I ate too many English muffins. I am tempted to throw out the additional cinnamon raison packs. They are seem to be a red light food. It is hard to toss free food though. I did make breakfast sandwiches and will do another round today. I am doing a quick trip to get cukes, olives and fresh moz so we can have greek salads and caprese salad with all of our tomatoes.

No gym yesterday but I spent 3 hours booking our Galapagos flight. I went from $3300 round trip to $1450 round trip. Time well spent. I am finding it more difficult not eating until 11:00 am. Maybe that means it is starting to burn some calories. I will keep it up for the day. My Prolon Fast kit is due tomorrow but the coaching sessions start Sept. 26. The next Mon. is when I will begin. I am going to try and cut all flour by then. I am glad to be doing this thing by stages.

BBE: LOL about the turkey. There are so many turkeys around here, that incident wouldn't happen. People might come to blows over mask wearing, however.
joy: thanks for giving the update on your DH. It spurred me into getting my DH results on an app so I feel more in control of the information. There is a messaging component and our appts are there. With watchful waiting (the approach we took) he has an appt in Dec. which seems a little far way. But again, I am not the Dr.
curleyjax: I spent the day going through drawers, mail, and correspondence. It feels wonderful to have them cleaned up.

Good morning coaches,

I did some housework for my exercise yesterday. A friend was coming over so I used that as motivation to get moving. I've known him for years. We worked together in the ICU in Washington and then here and we used to be hiking buddies until he started having different joint issues. Anyway he wanted to hear about my backpacking trip including looking at the map and photos. That doesn't happen often for sure and was fun. After that the day got away with me with errands and then another friend coming over and out to dinner. I am doing well with not drinking, but I will say it's a bit annoying being around people when they get quite tipsy. I have loosened up my diet the past couple of days including eating all the fries with half a burger last night. The salty fries are showing on the scale.

This morning I hiked the Holbert Trail that's 45 minutes away with my early morning friend. We like the trail because a lot of it is in the shade if we go early and it was only about 77, but the humidity was in the 70's. Yuck! We had some rain late yesterday afternoon and the ground was moist. I've been awake since around 2 this morning, so I'm sure a nap will be in order. Tomorrow I go get my food plan so I've done very little grocery shopping. I don't want to bring the wrong things in the house. A little gecko just strolled by on the wall outside my office window. We have a bajillion of them right now. We also have a lot of bugs, so hopefully they are eating some of them.

Maryann That's a great reduction in the price of your airfare. Who do you go through?

Penny The way you describe the rain you just received is the way most of our rain is here. The good thing is that it doesn't last long. Nothing like the drizzle that we had in the PNW.

GardenerJoy You're reminding me that I probably better go get a flu shot. I do want to get the Covid booster since I'm over 65 and I want to spread them out a bit.

Curlyjax I'm glad you like your new haircut. Nothing like seeing the contrast between your friend's Mom's house and the uncluttered house to be a reminder for which you would prefer. It's hard to do and I don't even have the kids to consider.

Bill I guess people are just too stressed these days. Glad dw continued with her walk and stayed away from the two hot heads. You just never know these days what people are going to do. If I ever win a seat on a voyage to space, you can have my spot. I have no desire to go.

Thumbs up Monday - James Meredith blocked from U. of Mississippi by Gov. Ross R. Barnett (1962)

Diet Coaches/Buddies - Eating was on plan with no daytime snacks, CREDIT moi. Dinner on the patio continued until I couldn't see DW in the dark. And the mosquitoes were out. Both of us were wearing jackets. We might have eaten inside but the neighboring family was all gathered out on their patio. Couldn't let them beat us in pretending that summer continues.

Walked around the local reservation with DW, DS, and DIL, CREDIT moi. A really nice afternoon. DS is on a month's "sabbatical" from his company - a nice perk after a handful of years with them. He isn't traveling, but is catching up on his home projects. I found out from my neighbor about his new car. Seems that the lease ended on his Toyota Sienna - big family friendly van type. "I'll take a new one just like this," he told the dealer. "Good, we'll put you on the 8-month waiting list," the dealer told him. As he stood there with his wife and three kids who needed a car to drive home. Had to choose from what was on the lot. Got a good enough car, slightly smaller, but left a bit agog that this shortage of cars is real.

Joy (gardenerjoy) - Do continue to admire that you calculate your exercise opportunities despite your full life.

maryann - Super Kudos for getting the better deal for your Galapagos flight. English Muffins are a big draw for me; I wish they were sold in packs of two instead of six.

Karen (karenrn) - Neat to talk with someone who really wants to hear your hiking details. Love the image of your geckos and bugs demonstrating the balance of life in nature.

curlyjax - Thanks for the reminder that an uncluttered place can feel peaceful. I'm still fighting that battle.

Penny. - Hate to hear that you're putting away the deck cushions and umbrellas - as if summer were drawing to a close.

I did get the lawn mowed yesterday which was exhausting but satisfying. I managed to go a whole day without talking to anyone but my neighbor briefly and felt okay about it, loneliness wise. I was mostly OP yesterday for food. I am going to do a lot of cooking after work for meal prep, and need to make a call for my aunt. The kitchen area where I do bills etc is slowly looking better. I seem to be running late again so personals tomorrow.

Good Morning, Coaches.

Oops. I hit the snooze button for about an hour this morning. Monday indeed.

Food was time restricted again and the scale is below ticker. YEAH!!!! That is despite the four macaroons given away free to me when I stopped at the new French restaurant to check out the menu. It was closing and the cookies were day old. Yum. Fully decaffeinated and only 1 English Muffin. I call it a win.

Karen: I went through Kayak to get the airfare.

Got to run.

Good morning coaches,

Food was close to on plan yesterday except that I at the burger patty out of the left over half burger for a snack. Weight is still up a bit but that is soon to change. I go meet with the dietician today to get my food plan and then on to the grocery store to be sure we have the right foods in the house.

Yesterday I signed up for three days of hiking in early November with one of the groups I'm in. I'll drive down to Willcox AZ the night before and have a motel there for three days. We are hiking between one and three hikes each day in different areas. Of course some of the hikes are quite short, but to some of the peaks in the area. Another something to look forward to. The last day, 11/6, we will do a loop hike in the Chiricahua National Monument. I've done the loop before but it is such interesting landscape that it's time to do it again.

Maryann Sounds like you will be rested to start the week.

Curlyjax I'm sure that lawn mowing is good exercise and I bet it looks good too. How much longer until there is no more lawn moving because of winter?

Bill That's so nice that your son gets a month long sabbatical. I bet he can get quite a few projects done in that time. Hearing about the car situation with your neighbor is a dose of reality therapy for sure. I hope mine keeps running as well as it currently is.

Waving to Penny and GardenerJoy. I'm now going to attempt to hook up the Apple TV box that my friend gave to me. Had I known I wouldn't have needed the other cables I got, but oh well. I think I'm going to sign up for Apple TV so we can watch the Ted Lasso program. Dh and I don't really watch anything together and we need to find some things we both enjoy.

Have a great start to the week everybody!

Some emotional tension surfaced in DH's family with a text that went to the wrong recipient, involving a complaint about me that DH wasn't meant to see. Sigh. The complaint involved either a misinterpretation or misrepresentation, but we took the high road and addressed what appeared to be the underlying issue. We'll see if that takes care of things. Meanwhile, it's nothing that will be solved by food. And I have way better things to do with my day than to fret over it.

Exercise +50, 900/1400 minutes for September

BillBlueEyes: We considered replacing our 13-year-old car this summer, but the news scared us away. It will hopefully get us through one more winter. Then, we want a car that will take our steep driveway even when it's snow-packed or slushy.
