Default Frost warning tonight

Coaches

There's a frost warning for "low lying areas" in my area tonight and tomorrow night. I'm in a bit if a quandary about what to do with my rose bush. If anyone can help please chime in! I have this rose bush in a big pot. Its got buds on it and wants to flower again. Right now it's on the porch and that area didn't get frost for a while, so I'm not too concerned for all my plants out there (Bay laurel plant not withstanding. It always concerns me.) I wanted to transplant the rose bush from the pot to the ground. Do I just ignore the fact that it wants to flower for the sake of getting it planted so it survives the winter for me? Is there enough time for the rosebush to establish itself before winter comes? Is it doomed to perish no matter what I do?

Other than this food was 100% op. I.completed my ceramic mugs today and await 7 more to make up my Halloween series.of 13.mugs. 2 are already sold without having been completed. Instagram and Facebook posts brought me customers. May this be a sign of revenue streams in my future.

I start teaching a six week ceramicnhandbuilding class tomorrow. 3 students but 4 people, as one student has cerebral palsy.and his mother will.be his helper for the class. The toughest part for me is the communication. I'm unconcerned about the ability. I just want to be able to understand what he wants to say directly not via a helper. I don't know how his presence will affect the other two students. Usually it goes ok. I have a couple of years of teaching mentally and physically challenged adults art and from what I could see I didn't have to worry about the art part. I'm glad I can draw on that now.

Weight wise scale dropped to 274.4. Good. Dr is on Tuesday. I was 276 a.month ago Tuesday. Would like to be 272 or less but that's asking a lot. I did help.myself.by doing the suggested next workout #3. This was a core interval workout. 6 rounds of 5 exercises. Each exercise done for 30 seconds. It felt like it was going to go on forever, while at the same time each exercise of 30 sec felt super short. It def.made me sweat which is good and needed. I again did it at night, around 9pm, which my body knows is insane. So this is part of the strategy to shake things up and keep the body guessing, push it out of its routine. Derek, the exercise guy keeps telling me it will be "fun". For a few seconds, maybe. Mostly I can hardly stay focused on the exercise. My mind wants to run away.much more than.my legs want to move for the "fun" of it.

Credit for doing whats right for me even if it feels wrong and I don't want to.

Have a good night.

Thumbs up Saturday-New Zealand becomes 1st country to grant all women the right to vote (1893)

Diet Coaches/Buddies - Made the second trip to the library to pick up my reserved book, Disloyal by Michael Cohen. Hard reading but wanted to form my own opinions. The librarians stand waaaay back; I put my library card on a small tray such as is used to present a restaurant check; the book is brought out to the table and dropped like nuclear waste. My trip to the Public Works Department to leave off my old HP printer failed because their website hours didn't match the restricted hours on the sign at the gate. Then, my attempt to pick up "bags of books" at another branch of the library failed because THAT library branch wasn't open as advertised on their website. Updating websites to match current reality seems to be failing when staff isn't allowed in the office.

Eating was on plan with no daytime snacks, CREDIT moi. The big green salad was made with supermarket cukes but still with our garden's cherry tomatoes. The Gala Apple for evening snack served me well - as always. Excitement was receiving a package with an ordered birthday gift for the DGD.

onebyone - Ouch for a frost warning - seems so early here in dwindling summer - he said in his continued denial. I join you in being suspicious of an exercise guy who says it will be "fun".

Joy (gardenerjoy) - Love your DH's solution to keeping up with his friend - at a social distance. Congrats for keeping your book club alive with Zoom.

Karen (karenrn) - Kudos for "I need to make a very realistic plan" - hard to do sometimes when realistic doesn't match desired. LOL at the resolve to only buy one pair of hiking shorts at REI. Understand how that might be a challenge for you - when I go to REI I want several of everything.

curlyjax - The seasonal changes to the leaves of trees is just the best. Kudos for watching travel shows to keep in mind that this situation will change.

VertOlive - Congrats for being on track with your eating plan; 600 calories so far isn't very many for a day.

DH enjoyed his little outing. They walked a bit in the park after lunch. Most folks weren't wearing masks. He and his friend did. The young people, respectfully, got way off the path to let them pass. It made him feel old but, also, venerable.

I probably had more calories than necessary yesterday, in an attempt to address fatigue. It didn't help. I got a good night's sleep last night, which did help, so I plan to do better today.

I could only eat half a baked potatoes and a few steak tips last night (takeout) without feeling full which concerned me, but a bit later I was hungry again-and got into the highly addictive peanut butter filled pretzels from Trader Joes. Over ate them and did not feel pain. I'm tossing out my sugary gum today- which I had to mix with trash to stay out of- as I was using them for a sugar hit. Gave myself a break from all exercise yesterday other than am stretches.
Today I need to switch out the fall clothes, do groceries-dump-bank run, and supervise/be around fo DS's project of tearing down an old shed. It's cool out so perfect weather for it.
I don't have any social plans whatsoever but DS is here to keep me from talking to myself all the time I'm learning to get more comfortable with this, as the return to regular life won't be here for quite some time. I find Sundays difficult at times, particularly now with no church other than zoom which I find a bit depressing, so I need to find some new sunday rituals.

Good morning coaches,

Food was on plan yesterday, but the plan was generous. I've made a very realistic plan again today and I did hike this morning with a friend. She is a slower hiker, but I love her company so it was very worth it. She has gone into business making chocolate chip cookies during the pandemic and delivering them. She wanted to do something that is positive and fun and it's working for her. The proceeds go to the animal shelter and she says she has met some very nice people. I did go to REI yesterday and they didn't have any shorts in anywhere near my size, either a couple of sizes too small or a couple of sizes too large. The gal at the door said things are a bit limited and being changed over for winter. Winter? Really? We don't really have winter. I wear shorts to hike in all year long. So when I got back to my car I ordered them online and will pick them up at the store when they arrive. I also purchased a pair of inexpensive denim shorts at Kohl's because I need a replacement for the ones that are wearing out. My husband and I really do wear shorts most of the year.

Curlyjax I wish you could get in to the doctor sooner. Of course I am hoping you will learn that it isn't anything serious and won't be feeling so worried.
GardenerJoy I'm glad your husband enjoyed his outing. I just have to get out or I'd lose my mind.
Bill I have a hold on Disloyal, but it doesn't look like I'll get it for months. I hope by the time I do I won't care about it anymore cause we have moved on (fingers crossed).
Onebyone I wish you could send a bit of the cold air my way.
VertOlive I think I need to know what you ate so as not to want anymore than 600 calories. In any event I don't imagine it will last unfortunately. Once in a while I think we just have those not very hungry days.

Waving to TokiDoki, Maryann and Penny! Have a good day everybody.

Good Morning, Coaches.

What a luxury to post on a laptop with a second cup of coffee in me. Grateful.

The air is fresh with a touch of fall. The Air Quality Index which at its worst read nearly 300 is down to 37 this morning. I am going to experiment (play) with the latest additional to our battery lawn care system. DH says it is the last piece we didn't have - the leaf blower. I think there might definitely be some comic relief by about 11:00 a.m. This outside work plus machines and stretches at the gym will mean I have intentionally exercised four days straight. This is a BIG deal. It is critical for me to keep moving to avoid serious health issues like my back going out or stress during distance learning.

I had a major meltdown during Googlemeets as the internet which was supposedly fixed dropped me from the class but left the freshmen in. When I came back, rap music was playing and God knows whatever else. It set off a panic attack. I know it really wasn't a big deal but as a 31 year veteran I am hardwired to never leave a class for ANY reason - bathroom breaks, phones, anything. On the same day I had tried several new strategies and met with only minor success. I called DH and announced my December retirement. He talked me down from the ledge. We decided instead that I would begin teaching from my high school classroom again. The internet is much more reliable. I have a large smart TV which I can put the students on which leaves my laptop completely free from which to to present. This is much easier than splitting a small laptop screen. Finally, since I can only be on campus between 6:30 and 4:00, I will have to leave and go workout. I will still do some Saturday hours at home but there is more of a break.

A Beck advantage to all this is I have to prepare the food I will eat during the day again since nothing else is open. Like Penny my weight was in the upper half of a decade that is not my final destination. I do NOT want to go back to where I was.

Karen: I agree with the idea of making a living plan and then sticking to it. Thanks for reminding me that has worked for me before.
BBE: I love the Herons as well. We grow rice and I think it is the herons' favorite place to land. We also have a famous flyway for geese. ( I think that is right. Maybe it is just ducks.)
Curleyjax: It is scary to dwell on health issues. DH just came back with a highish PSA and now has to go to a specialist. I did a little research but then remembered the chances are greater he could get hurt in a car accident. First things first and sometimes the first thing is to divert my mind with a leaf blower

Wave to all.

Post Warning: long and all text. No pictures! Imagine! In this day and age!

Hi Coaches!

I've had something to do every day this week. Potter's guild stuff. Side projects. Today someone called the makerspace.where I am making the halloween mugs (i post the images online underneath the business's banner since I am also making them to promote an upcoming one day workshop about... you got it..making halloween mugs! lol.) He said he saw my mugs and my designs and loved them and wondered if I did custom work. (Yes) Then said he'd want 20 mugs if possible. I had to consult my mug thrower, Y, she makes them for me. I could handbuild them but no. I don't need to add to my already lengthy process. I would rather split the dough. Worth it. So I ran the prospect of making 20 mugs by her. She said wow and then yes, of course. My email was given to the caller, though his phone number was passed on to me. I prefer to wait for an email but won't wait longer than a day. If we are to make them we need to be on it. I still have to make and finish two previous orders for sculptures: the Japanese Bobtail cat urn, and an atv with two riders (complicated). This week they need to come into existence so they can begin the long slow careful drying process. And then the Potters' online sale will be introduced Tuesday night at our first.guild meeting on zoom for the 2020/2021 year. More chatter will come toward me about that.
Busy.
Lots of balls in the air.

Almost normal but not. Our covid cases are increasing daily. We had 400 in the province today which prompted the premier to roll back the amt of people allowed to gather. 25 outside down from 100 and 10 inside down from 50 I think. I wondered if my class of 4 plus me would.end up cut. We're on the edge of that. I'm not sure the new rules apply to.me where I work because we are north of Toronto so maybe not a problem like those bad Torontonian's that all of Canada loves to hate. (True.)

I think we are seeing the results of Labour Day Wknd and back to school cases starting to show. Anyway I told my new clay students to take their clay and tools home in case we get shut down. My last class made boxes of stuff during quarantine. They were glad to have the clay.

So today I completely forgot to do my daily workout. Broke my streak at 3. Yikes! I'll just pick it up again tomorrow.

Scale was back to 276 today after 274 yesterday. Everytime the Dr is looming on the horizon the scale doesn't want to give me a low weight. I really have to work for this weightloss. Its no joke how difficult it is. I'm hovering between 20 and 22lbs down for over a month. I started May 27 so I am closing in on 4 months on plan. That's a good plan for me. I can manage it. Some weight loss is better than none and the trend is down.

Wow this was so long
If you read, thanks for reading.

Good midnight, everyone!

I had a little caffeine in my coffee this morning since the last of my decaf was not enough, and now I'm unable to fall asleep.

No change in my weight but today I was on plan. The air is good again and I plan to go for a long hike tomorrow (today) if the rain stays away.

Curlyjax, I am sorry you are having some health concerns. Hoping for the simplest answer.

Maryann, the air is glorious after all that, isn't it? I'm glad you have a better solution for your teaching.

Karen, family issues are so stressful sometimes. I think you are wise to stay out of it and let your husband deal with his brother.

Bill, I need another class. I miss taking a class and traveling. I'm not sure about doing a class online though. I might have to consider it.

Onebyone, you have a lot going on. I bet Bill's wife would know about the rose bush.

Joy, you are cruising along with the exercise. I'd love it if people got out of my way when I walk in the park. lol

V (having trouble remembering your username still for some reason), I always say enjoy those reduced hunger days while you have them because they sure don't last.

Thumbs up Sunday - Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan begins 1st circumnavigation (1519)

Diet Coaches/Buddies - This time my trip to the Public Works allowed me dispose of my HP inkjet printer. Big deal for me because I don't like getting rid of anything. Ever. It always hurts that an item that has some amount of life remaining goes to the scrap pile - even though I hated it myself. Some consolation: I set it in a bin on top of three other printers - all newer than the one I was leaving.

Walked around the local reservoir looking at birds in the morning, CREDIT moi. Was a particularly successful trip when we saw 7 Green Herons and two different species of hawks at one location. Later, more hawks were spotted and some migrating fall warblers. Fall warblers are notoriously difficult to identify; they all look alike in their Fall feathers.

Eating was on plan with no daytime snacks, CREDIT moi. Dinner was inside since we don't eat on the patio when we'd have to wear coats. The simple dish of fresh spinach sauteed with a crushed garlic pleases me every time we have it. My brain retains the childhood Popeye notion that spinach will make me strong, LOL.

onebyone - Just terrific that you're so busy that you have to turn down paying work. What a success you've made your career. Kudos to you for that.

Joy (gardenerjoy) - LOL that your DH had to suffer the indignity of young folks being differential. I remember the first time a kid called me "Sir" - I looked around to see who he as talking to, LOL. Congrats for allowing yourself a good night's sleep.

maryann - Kudos for four days of intentional exercise. Wish the services in our neighborhood would use battery leaf blowers - the gas ones make such a racket. Ouch for the new technology disrupting your class.

Karen (karenrn) - Yep, of course REI won't have shorts when it's time to buy winter clothes. BTDT. Glad that I don't have a friend delivering cookies.

curlyjax - When I become Czar, Trader Joe's will not be allowed to sell stuff like peanut butter filled pretzels - just too hard for many of us. My version of that is Oatmeal Cranberry Dunkers; I can eat the whole container.

Penny. - Yay for some clean air at last.

I'm in a rut on exercise and I'm not doing the strength-training that I planned for this month. Oh well, consistency is more important to me than variety. The variety will return as long as I continue to be consistent, because I'll get bored and because I like how I feel better when I do my muscle-building yoga routines.

Exercise +35, 985/1400 minutes for September

curlyjax: I got divorced in my 20s. One of the things I read was that everyone thinks that Friday nights would be the worst when not in a relationship, but most people find that it's Sundays. After all, hanging out with friends on Fridays is just as cool. But Sundays turn out to be really long without a partner to share them with. After learning that, it got easier. I developed some cooking patterns and some planning-the-week patterns that made a difference -- something I could look forward to all week and then implement on Sundays without interference from anyone else. As you say, Sunday rituals make a difference.

maryann: Our school district opened its classroom for teachers, largely because of the better technology that could be provided. I like your reasoning -- I think that could be a terrific solution for you.
Sorry your DH is dealing with a high PSA. That's been an issue for us all year. DH has been putting off the next step of an MRI for months because we've been so isolated. Since I do the grocery shopping, he's only been in one building besides our house since March -- the license office. We did a little research and also found it's probably nothing to worry about, but we can't stop it being a worry, anyway.

DD made a surprise visit home- so I'm definitely not lonely this weekend She is doing mounds of laundry since it costs money there- I pointed out it costs money here too for me, ha! and picking up some stuff. I made salmon for dinner as requested- then got into her dessert. I know we're supposed to use CBT to stay out of things but its much easier when they aren't in the house. Still I'll get back to my routine later today and all will be well.
]I'm wondering if this bloating is due to excessive stomach acid, which I have had a few times in the past and treated with omeprazole. I found some notes I wrote the last time it happened and it seems very similar, which makes me feel much better. I am still on track to see the gyn in a few weeks, and will see my pcp later this week if the bloating continues for sure. Thanks for the empathy everyone, it makes me feel so good to know you are all here.
Today I have got to find my winter clothes since that didn't happen yesterday. And get a walk in as that didn't happen either.
Gardenerjoy- thanks for the thought about Sunday rituals. It's definitely tougher without seeing folks at church in person.
Maryann- classroom internet sounds like a good idea, and a break between home life and work makes sense. Yay for a productive workout with the leaf blower!
Karen- it is so annoying when they don’t have clothes for the current weather. Wearing shorts all year round does sound nice, I must say.
Onebyone- your ceramic stuff is always so interesting, I love hearing the inside story about artisans. Too funny that Canada loves to hate Torontonians. I have lovely memories about Toronto, the first country I traveled to.
Penny- good to hear from you and glad the air is good again.
Bill-fresh spinach with garlic, how yummy! I really miss our swap shop being open with the hope that castoffs will be enjoyed by someone else.

I just joined 3fc and read a success story that mentioned the book and thought this might really help me. Went to book store and bought a used version of The Beck Diet Solution and have just started it. Will get to day one while I am at work today. Will welcome any input on getting started on this journey. TIA

Drat! Lost a big post due to the continuing internet problem. SIGH!!!!

Welcome, Serendipitous. The most successful part of Beck for me was I didn't have to change the food at first. I had to begin by focusing on my food habits.

Yesterday was successful. I finished the backyard and sat down and ate dinner which I haven't done in awhile. Weight is four pounds up from ticker. Today I will order a few of the Dr Greger 21 tweeks that have been successful.

Wave.

Thumbs up Monday - International Peace Day (since 1981, by United Nations resolution)

Diet Coaches/Buddies - Joyful time at the DGD's 5th birthday party. She seems a foot taller - hard to adjust to her growth both physically and verbally. Just six adults celebrated with her outside despite the chilly weather - designed so that we were COVID conscious as best we could. No masks while eating - which was most of the time. The gift that consumed most of her time was an old fashioned 3D Viewer. She loved being in control of putting the disks in, taking them out, shoving the viewer into the face of some adult to exclaim about a stingray. She has the skill to peel away her aunt for private time even while right at the table. Then her grandmom. Then me. It works since it allows the remaining five to converse as if adults.

In deference to COVID, DD had four separate events for the DGD's birthday. The good news is that we had good communication in our small group. The bad news is that we missed seeing their other friends whom we've come to know over the years. DD solved the obvious problem by buying a bunch of birthday cupcakes instead of cakes for each event. However smart my DD is, she miscounted cupcakes and had to make an emergency run to the supermarket for a small cake for our event. The good news is that she bought a small one so that we all had only a small slice and weren't tempted to take seconds. The DGD's piece was cut; then the large '5' candle was attached; then she blew it our so that she didn't blow over everyone's cake. Funny times.

Eating was on plan enough, CREDIT moi. Snacking at the party was mostly beet-lemon hummus with veggies, but also a bit too much cheese. The beet hummus wasn't too strongly beetish - I enjoyed it. Would never have bought it myself. DD served modest platters of food so that everyone only ate reasonably. I ate no more food than I would have at home. That's a fine party in my book.

Joy (gardenerjoy) - Yay for consistency. When my doctor told me that my PSA was high, I asked what we'd do. "Nothing. All men your age are high. You'll die of something else first." I suppose that was to give me solace, LOL.

maryann - Neat that you could work outdoors without complaint about the air quality.

curlyjax - LOL at your DD discovering that laundry costs money at school. As if it'd been free all those years at home. Hope you get to feeling better.

serendipitous - Great that you started with The Beck Diet Solution - the Pink Book. I like that for starting. My only recommendation is to take seriously her advice to learn the strategies - even when they seem simplistic or stupid; you'll keep using them over and over again. And don't try to make lots of personal responses right away. It can be tiresome and detract from the real benefit of posting here for support. It'll take a bit of time for us to emerge as separate folks. Glad that you've joined us.

reality check
If you are thinking: I'll figure out how to squeeze in these diet and exercise activities when the time comes.

Face reality: You're setting yourself up for failure. Extra time will not magically make itself available. You have to plan your life around diet and exercise activities - not vice versa.
