Apparently wheat gives me acid reflux. I've thought this before but it was just confirmed--I was feeling too down to cook so I grabbed a weight watchers spaghetti meal. Instant acid reflux. I have no problem cutting out wheat.

I'm thinking about switching to South Beach. Basically I would just have to switch to lean meat and add in yogurt, beans, and milk. I think it'd be a much better plan. If you guys wouldn't mind, though, I'd love to keep posting in the Atkins forum.

It's not set in stone. I'm still thinking about it.

channeen 03-09-2011 07:36 PM

How often do your plateaus last? I lost 5lbs quick within the first 4 days of induction and then I have been yo-yo-ing gaining and losing 1 lb. I have decided that I have hit a plateau.

Any advice on how to handle them, other than waiting them out. I am getting frustrated. I'm not gonna quit by any means but I sure would like that scale to move.

fatmad 03-09-2011 08:58 PM

hey there

I am back to induction this week after going off plan for a bit. I have tried a few times to add a few more carbs back into my diet. but its always a disaster, gets me into big time carb cravings. I start with healthy carbs, but go off the rails quickly. My blood sugars are staying good now, at least I am not doing myself in that way. But after a few days of being off the rails, I am back to clean atkins eating again.
Made a purple cabbage slaw today. One of my recipes for this has walnuts, but I will wait for a couple of weeks to make that one.
Got lots of veggies in today.

Elizabeth: Make sure you keeping checking back with us :) I hope the calorie counting works better for you! Good luck  You are still partially low carb & calorie counting-so thats good :) I am not going to lie, I have been considering calorie counting as well. But when I did it initially for 2 weeks before atkins- i didnt lose ANYthing :( So now that I am seeing results with atkins, I dont wanna change-but who knows, lol. I know every1s body is different, and it has worked for you in the past--I am sure it will still work :)

MoodyGirl: I love counting carbs, lol its so easy. Its like my eyes just got accustomed to just looking carbs, NOTHING else! Lol I understand :D

Linsy: aww! def come back and keep posting here :) I hope the change in lil food, makes your metabolism good as well :)

Channeen: Haven't had any plateaus yet, well kinda did when I fell off the plan for 2-4 days last week & got back on induction 7 days back--for me personally drinking water helps ALOT!! I still can't get enuff vegetables (12g is very hard for me). But I'm still loosing, so I am not going to change that. Just when I drink less-water, the weight goes up 1 pound--and the nxt day, back down with more water!

Fatmad: welcome backk to induction :) I agree, i fell off last week bcz I was sick-but my body feels much better on it now!

As for me, I am at 180!!!!!!!! another 4 pounds losttt :carrot::carrot: So excited, because felling off for 2-4 days didnt harm my body. So all together, I have been on induction for about 17-18 days (on & Off bcz when i fell off bcz of the flu) & lost 14 pounds! Thats pretty good for me :)

fatmad 03-10-2011 05:12 AM

did really well now for the first 24 hours. Just coming off working half the night, had egg salad for a bedtime snack so I will sleep for a while.
This is when I crave carbs so much, so its a little victory.
nighty-night!

ElizabethG 03-10-2011 12:06 PM

Linsy- That sucks about the reflux at least you know the trigger. I never did figure out what was exactly causing my stomach and indigestion problems. I wish I knew what caused it so I could just have stopped that.

FeelingThin-I am definitely checking in (like now)!!! My hubby is still doing Atkins so I will still hang around. Congrats on the 4 lb loss! That is amazing!!!

Actually my past 2 'high carb' days have been only 90 and 103 carbs. So that's really not all that high carb and I am feeling SOOO much better. No stomach issues, more energy. Lunch and dinner are still low carb, just breakfast and one snack has changed (I actually kinda wanted a MiM this morning but had no time to make it lol). Last night I made low carb cauliflower lasgana from the Lighter Side of Low Carb website. It was delicious!!

I weighed myself today and I was at 192 (cheese filled...lol that lasagna is really really cheesy). So I didn't experience a big gain switching back. So that's a plus. :)

Hope everyone will continue to do well!

Have a great day!!

Linsy 03-10-2011 12:33 PM

Elizabeth, I actually ate pasta 2 days ago and some bread yesterday and experienced a 1 pound loss. I was expecting a gain, so it was strange.

5 pounds is great! Those sweet cravings will stop soon , at least they did for me. But, around TOM they come back :/ I just will eat some cream cheese, splenda, and cocoa mixed together. It's a great chocolate fix! Hang in there! It gets easier :)

I'm guessing it may be the fat cells I'm losing releasing hormones but I'm starting to get freaked out.

Hi there! I am very late in this reply, I know...but I have had similar experience with Atkins and period/no period. My choice of BC may be the same as yours; I have not had a period since my DD was born 10 years ago...

HOWEVER: whenever I eat very low carb and start dropping weight, I end up spotting like the dickens! And having been so spoiled by not having anything in all these years, it's really a pain in the rear. But I look at it like this: the weight loss is really more important. There have been a few times when I just can't take it anymore and I actually eat a small amount of "bad" carbs each day to get it to stop.

Unfortunately for me, that little bit always leads me completely off plan in a matter of a week or two. I have had to decide for myself that I will put up with it, in order to lose the weight.

Just letting you know that you are not alone in the "weirdness". I have no idea what causes it, but you are not the only one.

Phoenix!

firkindness 03-15-2011 12:13 PM

Channeen - I've been sticking to low carb since November 8 and am down 45 pounds. During these past 3+ months I have had several stretches of up to 2 1/2 weeks where I see no action on the scale. The first one was frustrating but once the stall broke, I had steady loses for a couple weeks and then stalled again. Once you see that a stall is temporary you get less anxious about them. Just concentrate on how good you feel when limiting carbs and the losses will follow. Keep your chin up - you are doing great!

channeen 03-16-2011 09:19 PM

Thanks Phoenix...glad to know I'm not the only one.

firkindness thanks! I go down a pound and stay there for 3-4 days then finally drop.

readyfreddy 03-18-2011 04:23 PM

Hi all - I'm back. Hope you dont mind if I join in. I am on day 1. It's going pretty well. I realized I needed to up my fat after I was feeling really cravingy. I am thinking about how GREAT i feel in ketosis and trying to get through the next 3 days.

channeen 03-21-2011 09:10 PM

I love how the body can be deceiving. The scale may not move and you find yourself extremely frustrated. Then you measure and realize that you have dropped a ton of inches. Go figure! :dizzy:

Rocki 03-22-2011 11:02 AM

Hey everyone..I see this thread has been dead lately. Let's keep each other motivated! :) Where's moodygirl? I saw she posted about a 5K and I'd love to hear her progress. I have the same podcast and am on week 7, day 1 now. I've done 2-25 minute runs so far (just over 2 miles) and am super excited. The 5K I'm signed up for is May 1. I have 40 more days to build up to the 5K (around 30 minutes).

I'm going to start tracking my carb intake. I'm very frustrated with my lack of weight loss when I think I'm really doing everything right. I think the biggest thing may be not enough water and not enough veggies. I'm just not sure. I have a OMM every day (usually half of one actually b/c I make a batch of 6 and bake them in a 12 cup muffin pan, so I have 12 and have 1 per day). Is that okay? They're only supposed to be 1.5 gr carbs per muffin, so mine are really less than 1g for 1/2 of one.

Linsy 03-22-2011 07:15 PM

Rocki, try cutting out the 1MM and upping veggies/water. Last time I cut out all foods that were in the "gray area" (like splenda treats, aspartame, etc) and upped my veggies and water I was dropping .5-1lb per day for a while.

I agree! Every time I venture into the "gray area" of foods, it messes me up. I must keep on top of my water and veggies! The simpler I eat -- basic meats, eggs, veggies -- the better I do.

Phoenix!

Rocki 03-23-2011 10:15 AM

Thanks ladies! I'm going to *try* and cut down on the OMM. I love them so much though :(. I got on Fitday and am trying to track my stuff there. Does anyone use another site that's easier?

Breakfast this morning:

2 Eggs
1/4 C Shredded Cheese
Small cup coffee w/1 tbs cream
1/2 OMM with butter
2 Sausage patties
Water

That's just over 5 grams of carbs for breakfast. Is that a decent amount? What do you all do?

dietcokehead98 03-23-2011 01:12 PM

Howdy, y'all....I'm back!
I was calorie counting from January until this past Sunday. I lost 12lbs in 8 weeks and then nothing....nothing...nothing.
I'm back on low carb as it's the only thing that really works for me. I started at 223 on Monday morning and this morning I weighed in at 221. I know it's mostly water weight but I already feel so much better and motivated after that long long stall.
I work out with a trainer once a week-believe me, that's enough. And I'm really happy to be back in the low carb zone. Everyone here has always been nice (I've been on 3FC since 2001!)
Here's to steak and broccoli!

Rocki 03-24-2011 07:01 AM

So irritated with this. I haven't lost a pound in a week. I've been strict on plan since Sunday (cheated on Saturday) and still nothing. Yesterday I had a hot dog and piece of cheese for lunch and then spinach casserole (low carb) and chicken for dinner.

I just don't get it. It's very frustrating. I actually gained weight from yesterday. I'm not sure what to do.

startanew 03-24-2011 09:02 AM

Hi Everyone! Been on atkins this time since Jan. 1, down 54 lbs so far. I've reached my goal weight on Atkins before, and gained it all back when I was going through some rough stuff.
I found this group because I really need someone to talk to about low carb, seems everyone I know does weight watchers. Look forward to getting to know all of you!

dietcokehead98 03-24-2011 10:09 AM

Rocki,
You've lost 17lbs!!! SEVENTEEN! I think you're just in a temporary stall.
You don't weigh yourself once a day, do you?

Hang in there, I KNOW things will move again in the right direction. You may need to up your calories and fiber too.....

Rocki 03-25-2011 12:01 PM

Thank you, but most of that weight was from MRC (diet plan I did 3 years ago). I left my heaviest starting weight on there to remind myself that I didn't gain ALL the weight back, just most of it. I lost 48 lbs on that plan from Feb 2008 to April 2009. I kept it off until December 2009. I've, since then, gained all but 10 lbs back and have managed to lose 6. All in all I'm down 17 lbs for 3 years. Since starting Atkins on March 2 I've lost 8 lbs and then gained 3 back. I've lost 5 lbs in 3 weeks, and most of that was in the first 8 days. That's it. It's frustrating because I can't seem to lose more. I stick to the plan and I cheated twice. I know that's not good, but you'd think I would start losing again after I'm back on track and it hasn't been working that way. I think this is the plan for me, but it's upsetting that I can't make it work right. I'm gonna change my ticker and siggy to show what the atkins numbers are.

that is SO awesome! Welcome to the group. I love your avatar picture. Is that your son? He's adorable whoever he is! :)

What is a typical daily menu for you? I'd love to hear how you've been able to lose that much weight in 2.5 months. That is great! Also, do you exercise, and if so, how much and what do you do?

startanew 03-26-2011 12:26 AM

Thanks Rocki! Yes thats my son. :)
I'm in a weight loss competition for an $800 prize, so I've been playing and tweaking with my diet to try and get the best results.
I eat eggs daily for breakfast, usually 2-3 fried eggs. I've pretty much completely cut out cheese, ,sour cream and cream cheese also. So mostly just plain meat and veggies with the occasional splurge after weigh in day, lol. I also watch my calories, I try not to go over 1600-1800, usually stay around 1600. I exercise 2-3 times a week for about an hour at the gym.
One thing that works for me, and I normally wouldn't recommend this, but if I haven't lost any weight that week, the day before weigh in, I'll have an egg day. Pretty much eat only fried eggs all day. It never fails, I'm always down 2 lbs or better after an egg day. And I drink TONS of water. Thats it.
I really do want this to be a lifestyle, its not just about the prize, I am definitely planning on keeping this woe long term. I was at a very unhealthy weight, wasn't sleeping, couldn't breathe well, and had really bad heartburn. All of that has disappeared. The weekly weigh in is just a good motivator to help me along.
:)

Rocki 03-26-2011 10:02 AM

Wow, just meat and veggies? No cheese and no one minute muffins? :) That is so awesome. I just can't seem to do it. I hope you win that competition. You are doing great!

I've been in PA for 2 weeks and haven't been able to weigh myself (they're all super thin and their scale gives an error when I step on it LOL). I'll see in a few days if I've lost while I'm here.

dietcokehead98 03-27-2011 08:49 PM

What is a one minute muffin?

Rocki 03-27-2011 08:59 PM

It's that flax meal muffin others have mentioned called either Muffin in a Minute (in the Atkins books) or One Minute Muffin as people say on here. It's flax meal, egg, baking powder, splenda and butter. It's supposed to be just 1.5 g of carbs per muffin b/c the fiber in the flax meal cancels out the carbs. It's probably not as good for you as I'd like to think b/c I eat too many! :) It does mention it in the Atkins getting started programs they have out now, so I was eating them (too much as I said).

Hi Rocki - remember atkins makes you flush water- "cheating" makes you retain water so that may explain why you're up after cheats. (Although I should talk,) Atkins isn't really one of those diets you can cheat on while in induction.

How is everyone feeling?

dietcokehead98 03-29-2011 10:04 AM

Finally lost a pound. Geez.
I've always called one minute muffins "oopsie" muffins.... :)

Rocki 03-29-2011 10:28 AM

Great job dietcoke..(what's your real name??) :)

channeen 03-29-2011 01:43 PM

I am almost to my short term goal. I have been fighting to lose these 15 pounds for about 5 weeks now. So 2 more pounds and I have it. I finally got past my plateau but it took 2 weeks.

This weekend was tough for me because I was at a work function for 3 days and I found myself deconstructing sandwiches, picking the meat and cheese off pizza and wiping of the sauce, and unwrapping kolaches to get to the meat, but I didn't give in to temptation and dropped some weight. I'm happy.

I do have to say I have been adding one Atkins shake to my plan each day in place of breakfast or lunch and it has helped...and I'm full after I drink it so I'm not snacking in between. After I did that, I noticed that is when I pushed passed the plateau.

I have one month til Jamaica so I hope I can get 10 more off I would love to go 25 pounds lighter and back into some of the clothes that I haven't been able to wear!

dietcokehead98 03-29-2011 03:25 PM

Hi Rocki, I'm Amy!

Linsy 03-30-2011 11:56 AM

2 weeks in PA and down 10 pounds--that's what I get for living with naturally thin people for 2 weeks. They hardly EVER eat!

readyfreddy 03-30-2011 05:21 PM

haha linsy - can I borrow them?!

Tell me about the secrets of being naturally thin....

I'm doing good today. Not in keto yet. Hopefully tomorrow!

Who else uses ketostix?

readyfreddy 03-30-2011 05:23 PM

Great job chaneen

Linsy 03-30-2011 06:37 PM

My friend is 125lbs and 6'0. He literally deep fries half of the stuff he eats, but he only eats once a day. So he'll wait until like 6pm and then go get a huge burger with fries and eat it all. He also drinks full sugar soda throughout the day and sometimes snacks on popcorn or cookies and candy. The only vegetables that he eats are the lettuce and tomato on his burgers or BLTs. He just doesn't eat a LOT. I'd say he probably consumes around 1200 calories a day if even that much even though what he eats is incredibly unhealthy.

I adopted his eating habits because I didn't like cooking for myself in their kitchen so for the most part I just ate when he did. Since I was still eating low carb I wasn't eating nearly enough (unhealthy low amounts of calories). That's why my weight dropped so fast. It wasn't healthy but oh well. I'm back home now.
