Protien powders and bars

now the atkins has certain problems i.e unelss you are majorly organised eating out can be quite frankly a pain. i used to in the old days of mega training snack on protein bars. has anyone got any ideas of a low carb bar? the lowest i can find is about 11.5g. which in its self isn't bad but i can only have one a day.

Eating out on Atkins really isn't all that difficult....bunless burgers, steak, grilled chicken, veggies, salads, eggs.....I've usually been able to make something work. Lots of restaurants are happy to make substitutions like swapping veggies for potatoes etc.
As for "protein bars".....in an emergency when no other low carb foods are available....they're OK. Atkins Nutritionals advertises them as being "appropriate for Induction".....ummmm, NOT true. They contain ingredients like milk, soy & peanuts....which are not on any acceptable foods list Dr. Atkins ever wrote. And....the carb counts on those things are a total mystery:dizzy: They claim not to contain sugar alcohols....but, they contain glycerine and they deduct for it because they claim it does not affect blood sugar:shrug::shrug: Don't believe this! You may be interested in reading this article....it explains it much better than I can....but, I promise you, its an eyeopener and ANYONE on Atkins needs to read it!

I personally, do not trust any of these so-called "protein bars"....and I've read many labels. Most are packed with sugar alcohols and inappropriate ingredients for anyone doing Atkins.
IMO, if you want a snack....you're better off with a hard boiled egg or some string cheese.

when i said out. i meant away from home i.e at the gym shopping etc not eating in restaurants. if i'm out in town there is very little and i mean very little that is A) affordable and B) allowed.

You might want to think about making your own snacks to take with you. Hard boiled eggs, string cheese. portion out some nuts. Much better than anything thats processed.

Thats the thing i'm not the planning type i'm what you might call spontanious, i.e i'll just decide and go to town and go. no planning or i'll go somewhere planned i.e hair cut and on the way home i'll decide to take detour

Years ago, I was stuck with jury duty while on Atkins and had to grab a snack out of snack machines.....and they had single serving bags of pork rinds. Do you have those in the UK? I mean the small bags like chips and popcorn come in....snack bags....but pork rinds in them. Heck, in a pinch, at least it's something you can eat until you get back home to make a proper meal.

I totally agree with what you wrote. The last time I did Atkins (in the 90's) I developed a craving for the chocolate/coconut Atkins bars and had to break myself of that habit midway through....as they were totally stalling me. I honestly feel I'm better off just staying away from all that stuff and sticking with the healthy real foods I'm eating. I did not realize that the products/corporation......was not necessarily endorsed by Doctor Atkins...until I read what you wrote about that here somewhere. But it made perfect sense to me....I can't imagine him endorsing many of these products during induction.
Also....those bars gave me stomach aches...they have a laxative type of effect...caused stomach cramps for me....I think it's due to the sugar alcohols? Or inulin? Something in those bars caused it....as I was fine once I stopped them.

on a non atkins type topic of bars i used to make my own bars for when i played rugby/football. i was a defensive tackle on a team with a rubbish offence so i did spent alot of time on the field.

i'd make oat flapjacks mixed with coconut and almonds set with golden syrup with a thick crunchy layer of chocolate with powdered sugar. the ultimate energy food. all the types of carbs you could want from instant energy to mid and long term energy release one of those would see me through a whole match. and quite frankly they are to die for!
