side effect...

Hi there,
this is my third go with atkins and am feeling really commited. I started a few months ago, lost 12 pounds and was able to keep 10 of it off eating traditionally. I started Monday and must have been retaining a tonne of water as I've dropped 8.5 lbs since Monday.
Everytime I eat low carb I experience the squirts? Does anyone else have this and are there any suggestions on how to slow this down....?

thanks in advance
Tracy

Just curious as to what you're eating & drinking. Would you mind posting a typical day's menu?

tqvirgo 10-01-2009 10:36 AM

sure!

Monday

breakast
slice of ham
1 large egg
camomile tea

lunch
cheddar cheese

supper
chicken breast tsp olive oil sprinkle garlic
salad with lettuce, yellow peppers, cucs, green onion, tbs shredded cheddar, real bacon bits oil and vinegar dressing

roasted tomato with sprinkle romano cheese

1.5 liters water
one glass diet pepsi

Tuesday and Wednesday look the same only with better lunch of 4 oz lean meat and salad

everyday I have one cup of coffee with whole cream and splenda (the caffein doesn't mess with my cravings)

the very first time I did atkins I went caffein free and the same thing happened with the pooping issue.... and this time around I've been monetoring fat, not cutting it, but making sure it's only healthy fats...
I take a multi vitamin.

:shrug:Not really sure what could be causing your issue. Might possibly be the multi-vitamin depending on what you're taking. I personally couldn't handle the diet pepsi....that would send me running....but, everyone is different.
If I may say, doesn't look like you're eating enough. Salads are great....but....where are your veggies???
Don't be afraid of fats on Atkins. Most people think Atkins is a high protein diet when in reality, its a high fat diet. Fat keeps you full & satisfied longer.
All the best to you!!:)

Hey Jersey girl...thanks. I know I need a few more veggies, the problem is I'm just feeling so satisfied. I'm not afraid of the fat, just trying to pay close attention. been journalling and everything...other than the pooping, it's been the best experience I've had changing my habits! and it's not the weight loss that driving this satisfaction either..yay!
cheers

That happens to me too :O But I always thought it was because I was lactose intolerant and eating dairy salad dressing...

tqvirgo 10-02-2009 05:20 PM

Hey Shen,

That might be the case. I have never had a dariy problem before though?? It seems to have calmed down. I'm guessing for me it's fat related. Seems to happen on the days I eat more fat, and not enough veggies....

I am not really sure though, and my prmoise to myself is to take this day by day...good luck to you!

As far as the lactose intolerance goes, I only became LI about a year ago. I grew up drinking milk like it was water, enjoyed cheese, ate cereal all the time... but then one week all of a sudden, I had a bowl of cereal that left me bloated and cramping for days (not to mention what goes on behind the bathroom door). It took me about 2 weeks to figure out what it was.

Fortunately, some cheeses are ok and yogurt doesn't seem to be much trouble every so often. But God help me if I have even a glass of milk... I regret it for days.

If you felt like it maybe try switching to Soy/Rice milk or Lactaid (my fave). I found Westsoy light that only has 7 carbs per serving. On this diet it's more of a comfort drink for me, not something I eat with other food. Makes me feel full when I'm snackish.

Milk of any kind is not permitted on Atkins Induction.
On OWL (On Going Weight Loss) low carb milk, in small quanities is permitted on the 2nd rung of the carb ladder. Soy milk would not be permitted until the 6th rung of the carb ladder (Legumes).

When I started I had various GI complaints the first few weeks but I had read enough to expect them (especially constipation, but sometimes that alternated with the opposite).

After a few months everything was back to normal (and still is, 6 months out).

I think with ANY diet you can have a fair amount of GI changes (gas, bloating, digesting, & getting rid of). Most of the time i think it's a nuisance, and that your body will eventually get used to a new normal.

My advice is to give it time.
