What's the best artificial sweetner?

I've tried Splenda but I don't really care for the taste it has when I make things like tea. I've seen Truvia advertised. Can anyone recommend a good sweetner that is acceptable to use with Atkins that doesn't leave a bad taste (one that would be very close to sugar)?

Atkins recommends Splenda, limited to 3 packets per day.

Truvia (a blend of stevia and erythritol) has 3g carb/packet & stevia has 0g carbs. I did not care for stevia at all as I thought it had a strong licorice-type aftertaste. Based on that, I didn't try Truvia.

I don't know if the fact that stevia is not recommended by Dr. Atkins is due to the fact that its use was not widely known when he published his books.

if you are in the right area Smokey Mountain sweetener is pretty good. Ordering it online gives you enough for a lifetime so I'd tend to shy away from that in case you don't like it.

Agave nector/syrup isn't too bad. It has some low carbs in it but it's SUPER sweet so just a tiny amount will do. This can easily be found in health food stores.

Agave Nector would not be suitable on Atkins. It is mostly frutose and 1 Tbsp. contains approx. 16 carbs:eek::eek::eek:

"Agave syrup consists primarily of fructose and glucose. One source gives 92% fructose and 8% glucose; another gives 56% fructose and 20% glucose. These differences presumably reflect variation from one vendor of agave syrup to another.

There is some concern about the health effects of fructose, since Agave has a fructose content much higher than high-fructose corn syrup. Due to its fructose content, agave syrup is notable in that its glycemic index and glycemic load are apparently lower than most if not all other natural sweeteners on the market"

Thanks! I couldn't find any definitive stats on agave

Stevia is great! I'm not on Atkins but I use it in my coffee and am very sensitive to sugar. I'm fairly sure it doesn't have any carbs.

In my opinion, the best artificial sweetener is no artificial sweetener at all. For me, all it does is encourage my sweet tooth and that makes it more likely for me to eat things I really shouldn't be eating. I don't need to be drinking sweet drinks....I need to drink more water. I don't need to be eating desserts, even if they're artificially sweetened and low carb....the better choice for me would be to enjoy the sweetness of fruits that are lower in carbs, such as watermelon and berries (when it becomes appropriate to incorporate those into my eating, of course).

I dont know about Atkins, but I use Ideal. It taste better than most artificial sweetners to me. And one pack only has 1.5 carbs & it is made with Xylitol which is better for your teeth.

Luckybustert 08-24-2009 03:25 PM

I've tried the Xylitol and it is pretty good as far as artificial sweeteners go, but PLEASE be careful if you have dogs -- Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs.

I have been using Splenda for so many years that the taste of real sugar disgusts me. I also use it for cooking, most other sweeteners can't stand the heat.
