Question
Untill about 3 weeks ago I was doing Atkins. I got very frustrated with it because I wasn't loosing any weight. My blood sugars were great! That was my original reason for going back on it. So, I started doing Sugar Busters! and now my blood sugars are all out of whack again! I've also been feeling crappy the whole time I've been away from Atkins. I'm just wondering if being away from Atkins is the cause of me feeling so awful. Depressed, just sooo tired all the time and just generally not so hot. I'm getting back on program today. My beloved husband says he wants to get on program with me too. So, could it be eating the starchy carbs again that's causing me to feel so bad?

Dad is a long time type 2, insulin dependant (2 injections per day) diabetic. His Dr. told him if he could not get his blood sugar down, he would put him on more insulin. He's been eating "Atkins style" for about 2 months now & his #'s have come down considerably. Staying away from the starchy carbs (potatoes, pasta, rice, bread) is the ticket to controlling your blood sugar....especially if you are diabetic. |
Yes, I am a diabetic. I was diagnosed when I was 39, which was 9 years ago. I've certainly learned my lesson about starchy carbs that's for sure! Back on program as of today. Thanks for the suggestion of the book. I'm going to go to ebay or Amazon and see if I can find it.

I am not diabetic and can't offer any suggestions on that, but I wanted to let you know that I had a big plateau just after starting - I lost 5 pounds the first week (expected, especially as I had a bit of an indulgence before starting) and then spent 4 weeks without losing pounds (although I did think my clothes were getting looser). I was kind of frustrated but was really happy with how I was feeling (energy and lack of hunger) so I re-read the basics of Atkins & other low carb starting phases, made a few changes, and stuck with it -- it still took a while and the scale is not moving terribly fast for me, but it's definitely in the right direction, and more importantly I feel I could live eating this way forever.
Health is a lot more than a number on a scale. Blood sugar benefits to eating low-carb are huge, and I do think that eventually the scale catches up. If you've dieted a lot in your life (I have) I think our bodies are very protective of giving up fat stores. I'm just trying to show my body that it's not under attack - and that I'm patient. |
