Talking New To Nursing- New To Calorie Counting!

HI!!!

I've been nursing for almost 3mths and have just started watching my calories. I stay between 1500-2000 but am always at 1800 and below. Is this a good amount? It seems many people who aren't nursing and are dieting are taking in that much. I'm trying to lose 22lbs by January 1st and that will put me at my pre-preg weight. Then I'll create another goal of 24lbs to put me under 200lbs!

I've been living my new lifestyle for one week and lost a pound. I just want it to all fall off but I guess a pound is good/normal.

I'm new here so I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm going to go search for food ideas, mainly snacks, and see what I can add to my lame menu.

Honestly, I'd go in and talk to your doctor about it! He can give you a good idea of what calorie amount is healthy for your weight and nursing the baby . 1800 seems low to me... 1200 is the min. I've ever heard anyone suggest going and you need about 500 extra to produce milk for your baby .

My doctor is a reject and after my 6wk PP appt. I was excited not to have to see him again! LOL

I might call him and ask and see what he says, we'll see.

You really think it seems low? Yikes. I thought 1800 was high and have been making sure I stay below that even.

Thanks for your reply!!

Welcome!! I too have been nursing for 3 months. This time I was able to lose the weight much easier. First preg. I gained 40 pounds and only lost 20. This preg. I gained 33 pounds and have lost 43. The main difference is that I ignored the calories. I didn't eat like I was eating for two. I ate for me, when I was hungry and didn't skip meals. When nursing it is suggested to eat an additional 500 calories. I just eat healthy. I watch my milk supply. If it is seems to be going down I add a little more to my plate. Be sure to drink plenty of water and stay active. My little guy was born June 14th. When is your baby's b-day?

My guy was born July 1st! I already have supply issues already so I'm trying to be really careful. I take Domperidone right now to help with my supply.

When you need to add more to your plate, do you add anything specific (ie: more fat, carbs, calories, etc.)?

Thanks

La Leche League recommends 1500 to 1800 calories a day if you're dieting & nursing at once. I have personally found that 1600 to 1800 is good for me. Weight Watchers' POINTS system for my weight and nursing gives me approximately 1800 calories a day. So going by that, I'd say you're right on. Be careful not to go under 1500 a day, though.

If I need to add more I add meat, vegies or dairy. A yogurt is usually enough. Or a fruit with cheese.

Add oatmeal. It's a good healthy filling food...and helps your milk supply.

I eat oatmeal for breakfast with some brown sugar or Splenda and a half teaspoon of Smart Balance.
