I know that maybe I need to look deep within myself, and know that I need to stop. But I just can eat and eat and not even be hungry and still eat. I will eat because I don't have anything else to do, I just like the way that food taste in my mouth. I like to satisfy myself. I will drop the kids off and go and order food even if I just ate at home. I dont know what the deal is, but I can't let it get the best of me. I will tell myself that I am not going to do it anymore, but then WHAM! hits me like a sack of potatoes and I am still just eatineatingeating. Does anybody else do this and how do you handle it?
I love food. I like reading about food, planning food, cooking food. I even really enjoy grocery shopping.
I just had to learn how to do that healthier. It's almost like a game. Can I do that with less fat? Can I do that with less sugar? can I do that with less calories?
I eat with measuring spoons and measuring cups on the table. I research what I'm going to make before I make it or eat it.
You kind of shuffle your priorities from actually eating it all, more into the planning and learning parts.

HAHAHA! I just downloaded about 100 pages from the USDA about different foods and their nutrient content.

Yes!! I eat and eat and eat - hungry or not I eat and eat! One day this week alone I sat and ate 1.35litres of ice-cream in one sitting. Prior to that I had four hotdogs and for breakfast a large bowl of cereal.
I've thought about it and I have put it down to boredom, loneliness, comfort. I feel sick afterwards and tell myself 'never again!'. Of course it does happen again. I think this is going to be the toughest habit to break in my attempt to lose weight.
I actually hate preparing and cooking food, so my fridge and cupboards are full foods that are bough 'ready to heat and serve'. I will have to change that too.
Things that did help me in the past (but obviously I never continued)...after sitting down to a proper meal the first thing I'd do is get up and brush my teeth, I found that the clean, fresh feeling of my mouth curbed my need to eat. I also found chewing on a piece of sugar free chewing gum after a proper meal helped in a similar way.
Watching TV is a bad time for eating for me too. I found, and hope to start doing again soon, that exercising while watching kept me busy enough to not think of eating.
I always had cut up fruit and vegies available in the fridge too.
I love to eat too. I've found now one of my tricks is to pay even closer attention to my cravings. If I can't stick to plan, I think okay, what do I really want. I don't let anything 2nd best satisfy me, and I also know I'll appreciate the item more in a smaller portion (eating half a container of ice cream I've realized is much more fulfilling than eating the whole thing, not only do I have the other half to look forward to but the taste doesn't get old as fast unlike mindlessly eating a whole container). Sometimes I find I even really crave veggies! Or healthy meat! If it's something bad, I just try to include it in my daily calorie count and know that if I eat too much one day, I'll usually be not as hungry the day after. Working out helps my hungry sometimes too...but the energy to get started isn't always there
First, Throw out the junk food in your house (throw out the ice cream).
Second, Sit down and write meal plans AND snack plans for the week. You don't have to decide which day to have them.
JOURNAL. It takes practice at first and this is the best tool to learn how.
FIND alternatives AHEAD of time for your favorites. Instead of chocolate ice cream have fudgecicles (some are very low cal and low fat and low sugar). I also eat an icecream sandwhich (just one) (they too are not created equal) to substitute ice cream.
Just remember, your food doesn't have to be boring, you just have to relearn how to look at it.
Find the nutrient dense food list and buy some food on it every week.
VARIETY. Don't get bored. Make a master list so you'll be able to better think of what to shop for when you run out of ideas.
