support from your doctor
Went to my doctors today and actually went over a lot of things.
Okay, firstly I am amazed, I have had the same doctor my whole life, never really discussed my weight on such a personal level. I read on a forum that you need to approach your doctor, that in some causes they, even though are professionals, do not push the issue (unless life threatening) because it is indeed a sensitive issue.
So if you want to talk to your doctor it does come down to you, do your research, how being overweight is an emotional issue and tell them that this is very important and you are seeking their advice
It took me almost half my life to do this and now that I did I am through the moon. He is so supportive. We discussed my changes in the last month, exercise, the importance in making the right food choices - getting enough lean protein, milk and dairy (low/fat free). My appointment was over an hour long and in the end he gave me a referral to a nutritionist!
Basically he said since it was very important to me they can clear up some of the questions I have, those ones that I read about on websites (like the whole diet soda issue). So next Tuesday I have an appointment with someone that knows more than he has. I still think it was extremely nice, both the efforts he has put in and also for the referral.
