Default New (I believe) Food Lists Info

I didn't see this addressed in another thread or area, so I thought I'd put it here, knowing that our fabu administators would move or correct as needed!

Hope I'm not getting too hyper with the posting, but these changes seemed fairly substantial and EXCITING!

This interesting article on Atkins was posted in another forum I frequent, we found it of note: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm..._atkins18.html

In that same forum, a reliable poster had this to say, along with info she received in today's Daily Dish email from The South Beach Diet Official website:

The South Beach Diet (SBD) continues to evolve as new nutritional studies and information come out. Recently, the results of new studies have shown that some of the "foods to avoid" may not be as bad for us as the original studies on glycemic index demonstrated. There are also some new, exciting studies about the role calcium plays in weight loss. The end result is that you can continue to enjoy all of the foods recommended for the SBD-as well as adding back in a few of your favorites! Here are the major changes:

Milk:

Old Version:
Avoid all dairy in Phase 1, except for less than 2 tablespoons fat-free ½ and ½, nonfat milk, 1 percent milk, or soy milk allowed with coffee.

New Version:
Phase 1:
Now includes low-fat milk (fat-free and 1 percent), soy milk, and yogurt (low-fat or fat-free plain or vanilla light/lite only) on the Phase 1 "foods to enjoy" list.

Phase 2:
May add light/lite fruited yogurt as a "food to enjoy" in Phase 2. Note: Since the SBD is still low in saturated fat, high-fat whole milk products will remain on the "foods to avoid" lists for all Phases.

Tomatoes:

Old Version:
Limited to one whole tomato or 10 cherry tomatoes per meal in all Phases.

New Version:
Not limited in any Phase.

Onions:

Old Version:
Limited to ½ per day in all Phases.

New Version:
Not limited in any Phase.

Carrots:

Old Version:
Avoid carrots in Phase 1 and 2; allowed in moderation in Phase 3.

New Version:
Allowed, starting in Phase 2.

Thanks very much. I have added to revisons to the FAQ section with a referral to it in the old lists.
By the way, the Atkins link does not work for me.

Hey Ruth, I corrected the link, I hope. What was most interesting about the article is that it acknowledges that because of popularity of the more heart-healthy SBD, Atkins is having to admit a few more things and be a bit more honest about what their diet is all about. I would still never do Atkins, but I found the article and its implications utterly facinating.

Hmmm, looks like that Atkins article may be misleading, but nevermind, I don't want to start a whole Atkins debate.

I really want to see if I added my picture correctly. That's from Halloween, but that really is my bald head!

Ok, why isn't my photo coming up! do i have to hit something special? I added it through User CP and it came up. Sorry, is there a tech board somewhere I should be looking at?

Lisa, you are absolutely stunning! (I'm looking at your "user options page") Who needs hair when they're as beautiful as you!
Listen, I think what you did is... you put your photo under "profile picture" instead of "avatar". Try changing it...

Hi LRLisa,

I think your picture is so cool and your smile is gorgeous, very warm & friendly and definitely not scary!

Thanks so much for the update, I am especially thrilled to see the changes in milk, yogurt and tomatoes! I wasn't sure why tomatoes had to be limited anyway. ???

Default FIX

Did you think tomatoes were a vegetable? They are actually a fruit so I guess that is why they were off limits.

Tomatoes were never off limits - just limited in the original Phase I list and not limited at all in the newest revision. Yes, they are a fruit but so are peppers and cucmbers and squash for that matter.

See the FAQ section for the revised - and revised yet again - food lists.

A mention was made above about the Atkins people backing off from saturated fats. I got an email from their website today that states they are furious about this misreporting. They are standing by their diet as is. Although I choose to follow the SB diet, I do respect those that are going the Atkins way. I've done Atkins, and have been very successful, but I hate counting carbs!

Yep, Cassidy, I saw that same Atkins message, which is why I added the disclaimer further down. I find the whole thing really interesting. Were the quotes in the articles made up from whole cloth? Possible, since it originally ran in the NYT! Or is there some question among the Atkins ranks about the best way to sell their diet and products? Again, not that I want to start a debate on Atkins, but it really gives one something to think about. And it is always good to remember the motivations behind all this- Atkins is not only a diet revolution, it is a marketing revolution, too!

Cassie, thanks for the compliments! Glad I didn't scare you.
