Exclamation OMG! How can I be GAINing Weight on IP??!! Please help.

Hello all,

I restarted IP 3 weeks ago. The 1st week I lost 7 lbs, hooray! The 2nd week I gained all but 1 pound back. GAH! This week I lost 1 pound every day for the first 3 days, then gained it all back. Today, I'm down 1 pound, for a total of 2 pounds lost in 3 weeks.
NOOOO!
I have been faithfully following protocol.

My coach ok'd 1 oz heavy cream in my coffee, 0 carbs, 6g fat. I even dropped it this week to see if that would make a difference, but no.

I don't eat any restricted IP food, I don't want the extra soy.

I'm on thyroid meds, but my numbers are stable. I take all my supplements and drink 2L water a day + 2 coffee and hot tea throughout the day.

How in the world can I be gaining weight on so little food???

First of all, you aren't gaining weight. You have reported an overall loss for the 3 weeks (albeit small).

For most people, IP is a simple and quick solution.
For others, health issues can interfere (and I feel your pain on that!)
Your thyroid issues are a red flag for me.

Do you know that your complete thyroid panel is stable since you restarted IP? Not just TSH?

Mostly, I'd suggest checking with your doctor. What we can do here is to check to make sure the protocol is being followed with no deviations. The heavy cream is a deviation. The extra caffeine from coffee and tea is a deviation. Again, most of the time small deviations like this aren't an issue but they could be for someone who is resistant.

The big 7 lb weight loss is mostly water. So, I wonder what could have caused the water re-gain? The small losses since could actually be fat.
Did you also do measurements? Is there a change in those?

Have you had any cheats other than the deviations you reported? You are right. Most people easily lose on IP P1. Others have hormone or adrenal imbalances that could slow or block losses.

I suggest checking with the doctor who treats your thyroid.
And also posting a weeks' worth of menus with exact amounts, including all supplements, added salt, added oil(s) and other fats & use of additions like WF or water enhancers.

Some people lose better WITH the restricted. For others, it doesn't seem to matter as much.

There are SO MANY variables!

Thanks for your comments ... I'll drop the cream again and see what happens. My IP documents say coffee is ok, w/ 1 oz milk. :: The other tea is all herbal, no caffeine.

Yes, my total profile for thyroid is controlled. That's the first thing we checked when I started ballooning up again last year. I lost 88 pounds on IP before, only a moderate 8 pounds back in the 2 years after. It's last year that I gained 70 back.

Oh, and no cheats, I record every single thing. I eat all my veg and 3 IP packets a day. Last time I could only get 2 down a day, with an occasional snack when I was hungry. This time I'm doing it exactly!

I say get the thyroid levels checked again (if you haven't done it since restarting IP 3 weeks ago).

If all is well, relax and give it time. Weight loss is a fickle thing. We know IP works. Since you're a returner, many have found it doesn't work as fast the 2nd time around (it does for some, but not for many).

It does say 1 c. coffee on the protocol.
It didn't say in your first post that the tea was herbal, non-caffeinated.
I usually also drink more than the 1 c. coffee on the protocol so I make sure I have extra water to offset the dehydrating effects of coffee.

So sorry you're experiencing this frustration.

Thanks! Ok, so extra water to offset coffee. I'll try that and no cream this week.

I'm not on IP, so I hope it's ok if I pop in here. Is there any chance it could be cycle related gain? I gain 2-3 lbs during ovulation and 4-5 lbs during my period. It works out to about every other week, which seems to coincide with your ups.

My mom had lots of success on IP. Good luck figuring it out!

Are you drinking TONS of water? Water weight gains are especially prevalent in people who are dehydrated? The body holds on to every ounce you drink until you get to appropriate hydration levels.

Great article Why the scale lies... I cannot get the url to be accepted in this post so type in www and then health discovery (as one word) and then .net/articles/scale.lies.htm

SORRY... IT KEEPS BLANKNG OUT THE WEBSITE NAME so I had to break it up. It is worth typing it all in to read it!
