Talking Rate of loss is crazy!

I hope that these aren't famous last words but my rate of weight loss right now is unbelievably fast on this low carb diet.

A bit of background:
I am 58 years old and have always lost weight extremely slow. My last big push started in 2008 and it took me 2 years to get from 300+ to below 200 pounds. I just looked at my weight log and it took from Jan 14, 2010 to March 22 to go from 204 to 198. I was working hard at it too. I weighed and measured my food, stuck to 1200 calories and was exercising 4-5 days a week at a gym.

Then my father was diagnosed with cancer, and, for several reasons related to that, I started eating badly and gained back up to 250 over the course of a couple of years.

Fast forward to 2013, in March I was feeling desperate about my weight. My knees hurt badly, my mobility was decreasing, and I just could not stick to a healthy food plan. I decided to try a local bariatric physician.

I started on March 20. At first she put me on what seemed like an extreme diet, low carb, 800 - 900 calories and 20 net carbs per day. We gradually raised the calories and carbs and now I eat about 1100 calories and under 50 net carbs per day. I often find that I am perfectly happy with 30 to 40 net carbs a day.

I expected, and got, fast weight loss at first. I am amazed that my rate of loss stays so good! When I started getting close to 200 I mentally prepared myself for a slow down. I weigh so much less than in March and eat so many more calories that it was logical that my loss would slow down.

My rate of loss has not slowed down. Actually my rate of loss has been faster in August than it was in June and July. On August 1st my weight was 205.2. I hoped to get below 200 by the end of the month but was prepared for it to be sometime in Sept. However, on Saturday I saw a whoosh down to 198.8. This morning I weighed 197.6. My head is swimming this is so unbelievable!

I am kicking myself for not embracing low carb sooner. It is so much easier and better for me. I just wanted to tell someone and thought that this is the appropriate place.

Great job. Very awesome.

I am going much slower and that is ok. I 'started' May 1 at 282-284 and I am now at 252. I say started in quotes because about that time a great restaurant opened up near us and I went a lot. And eat very high carb.

What I started on May 1 was a lot more exercise which has remained constant. My biggest problem has always been exercise and food choices together.

Well getting better and better at low carb, which was the key because I am less hungry and I have more energy to exercise. So low carb was literally the key.

I had the modest goal of 250 by the end of the year originally and then hopefully 230 by next June. Then 200 in 2015. But hopefully below 250 soon which will be great for me and big to be closer to 200 than 300. Then I will revise to 240 by end of this year..And maybe revise that again :-).

I of course can't help and think about how great it would be at 200, but try to focus on the next 5 lbs then 10 lbs.

Time2lose -- congratulations on finding a plan that works for you. I'm going through the same thing as I switched over to Atkins/low carb last week after having regained 15 of the pounds that I had lost. Well, as of this morning, I only have 3 pounds left to get back to where I was.

I know I'm extremely carb sensitive, and I imagine with your results that you are too. So happy for you that this is working and showing great results.

I'm glad you've been so successful. I lost 100 pounds in about six months doing low carb.... and then stalled for the next six. I'm finally now just budging the scale again, but I'm keeping at it, because I feel a lot better when I'm eating low carb.

I've lost 20 lbs in two months!! I am in a state os disbelief. Even though I knew that low carb works, it is surprising the rate at which it is working. I am definitely going to make it to my goal of the 120s by June 1, 2014.

I find it so surprising that if someone decides to stop eating meat they are treated like saints but as soon as someone decides to do low-carb and/or avoid grains they are treated like there is something wrong with them. I knew that different bodies handle things differently. I have a cousin who can eat as much pasta, rice, and bread that she wants and maintains a beautiful body. I, on the other hand, have to work on it. My body just can't take the grains.

Congratulations on your weight loss! I was wrapping my head around the idea of trying low carb (20 net carbs) for about 2-4 weeks as I've stalled in my weight loss journey. Advise would be appreciated!!!

Seaurchin Not to scare you off, but read up on "carb flu". There is a withdrawal period that can sometimes hit you pretty hard with headaches and lack of energy, but when it clears, you feel amazing.

seaurchin, Sorry that I have not answered. My internet was down for a week and I only had my phone. I am terrible at typing on the phone!

I don't have much advice but I do recommend that you read up on low carb. Like RadioJane said, you might want to read up on "carb flu". My doctor told me to just take some over the counter headache medicine but I have read that salty broth helps.

Let us know if you decide to try low carb.

Also, I jinked myself. I am not losing as rapidly as I was but still faster than I did with just calorie counting.
