Default Workout Music for the Over-50 Crowd

I find music provides extra motivation for my workouts and my walks, and I'm always looking for new suggestions. I know there's another thread on the go with workout music, but it must be geared to the younger crowd, because I don't recognize any of the songs!! Perhaps we over-50's can give each other some ideas.

I tend to use fast or moderate paced music for my walks, but slow music for my weights, since that motivates me to do the repetitions slowly rather than rushing through things. Here are some of my favorites. I would love to hear yours!

Fast/Moderate Songs:
Singin’ In The Rain (Gene Kelly)
Daydream Believer (Monkees)
Heartaches by the Numbers (Guy Mitchell)
All My Loving (Beatles)
I Don’t Know Why I Love You But I Do (Clarence “Frogman” Henry)
True Blue (Madonna)
Dreams (The Cranberries)
Flashdance - What a Feeling (Irene Cara)
Gloria (Laura Branigan)

Slow Songs:
Born Free (Matt Munro)
We’ll Sing in the Sunshine (Gale Garnett)
The Impossible Dream (Roger Williams)
Stranger on the Shore (Acker Bilt)
Edelweiss & Climb Every Mountain (Sound of Music Soundtrack)
I Got You Babe (Sonny & Cher)
To Know Him is to Love Him (Teddy Bears)
The Song from Moulin Rouge (Percy Faith)
My Way (Frank Sinatra)

I must be a really odd age (40s)- I don't know many of the songs on your list - other than My Way, Singing in the Rain and Gloria. The other song lists on other threads, I don't know either - when I watch the music award TV shows, I have no idea who they are. I grew up on 70s and 80s music. But am always looking for feel good songs to add to my workouts - I will look up some of these! Thanks!

Hi Chickadee. I think most of the songs on my list are 50's and 60's (I'm 55). I suspect you'll recognize some of them if you listen to them on iTunes or YouTube, even if the name of the song is not familiar. Hope you find something you like!

I'm in my 30's and I love this list - what a great idea! I think it's nice to have something for everyone - it's nice to take a break from the dance-y gym soundtrack.

Glad you enjoyed the list, dcapulet.

IanG: When I feel like country, I pull out my Patsy Cline collection. I love all of her songs.

Interesting thread... And easy to see how what we like motivates each of us to MOVE!

I'm 65.Female.

Weirdo as it sounds...I prefer instrumental music....NO WORDS...Mostly jazz or funk!! Let the music rule and leave some room in my head for planning my day, thinking about yesterday....or preferably just zoning!

George Benson (Breezin)
Candy Dulfer ( Pick up the Pieces..Also done years ago by the Average White Band)

I'm 52 and I enjoy doing my weight training workouts to tunes by AC/DC, The Clash, OkGO, Cake, Weezer, Nirvana...basically the music I like to listen to. But I also put some Yo-Yo Ma Back Cello Concertos on to do my rowing to. It's soothing and peaceful and I get lost in the music and can row a long time. I put together the music for my cardio class, so I mix it up between songs from the 60s to today. I go to the ClickMix website to compile the tunes. I can manipulate the BPM for the songs so we can get a consistent tempo for the whole hour. They stay fairly current with their music selection.

I watch my soaps while I'm exercising, so no work-out music for me. I am 67 years old. The young girls who work at the tanning salon always have current hip hop music playing and amazingly, I have really gotten into listening to it. LOL Mostly I don't understand what they're saying, and I think that's probably a good thing, but I like the beat.
