Question I used to be 5'6"

So, I'm 38 and lost an inch somewhere around 2002 during/after pregnancy. I figure hips spread (along with everything else :/) which probably made my height dip?

Anyone else lose height from pregnancy or age? Is this common? I don't want to get any shorter but I guess I can't control gravity vs. spine.

I've been 5'6 since high school... Or at least I thought so until I went to the doc a couple months ago and they measured me at 5'5. I really don't understand it? I'm 29, I have an 8 year old daughter. I don't know where my inch went either. However, I still won't accept it. I've been 5'6 forever and as far as I'm concerned I still am I refuse to lose an inch in height, I thought that only happened when you get old!

I swear pregnancy did it. You have to figure the extra weight + hips spreading = slight spine drop. Glad I'm not alone.

I would be upset if I found out I was shorter. I'm not sure why but I would. I've never heard of shrinking, but I have seem people get taller after weight loss. Mysteries to me!

I refuse to believe mine! I was always 5'2.5", because I was adamant about having that extra half! Now I am 5'2". It's silly, but it bothers me!

I've heard theories that pregnancy causes you to lose height because the extra weight pushes the arches on your feet down. I have no idea if it's true or not, and I haven't measured my height since my son was born this year.

This is going to sound so weird!! I actually grew about an inch when I lost weight. For the longest I was told I was 5'3 1/4 inches. Within the last 2 years (different people measuring me) I am now 5'5. I was shocked but I was happy. Now I can weigh a little more

Lightbulb

Hey, good point! Maybe I'll get some of my inch back now that I've lost weight. I'll have to check next time I go to the doctor or have a measuring tape around.

I was 5'2" at my highest weight and am now 5'3", which is the opposite problem you've had. But I actually think the weight I carried before made my body sag and spread, let alone had me using poor posture! But I definitely gained some height after having my growth plates closed for at least six years.

I always thought I was 5'10", but I found out at a doctors appointment a few months ago that I'm actually 5'9". I think it has more to do with not measuring myself properly. I'm kinda glad cause I feel like I'm too tall.

I thought I was 5'2",ever since I was in high school I believed that but measurements taken at my Doctor's office showed 5' even, I didn't believe that and the next 3 times I went in I asked them to measure me again, the results were 5' even, measurements taken by different people on different scales but all at my HMO. I now believe them. I attribute that to better measurement equipment.
