So I've decided my ultimate goal weight isn't really a solid number -- it's whenever I get into an 8/10. I had decided a 12 would the finish line, but then I thought, "Hey, why not shoot for single digits?" so an 8 it is.
The thing is, how am I supposed to know how long or how much weight I need to lose to get to that point? Up until this point it's been about 20-25lbs in-between sizes, but I kinda feel like as I get smaller, new sizes are possibly going to come more often. So I don't know what to call my goal weight. I'm guessing as I'm starting to fit snugly into 12s, that's what I'll be in once I hit the number on my ticker. Should I just increase it by 10 until I hit goal? What would y'all do?
You could just go for a simple number like 150 and then fine-tune it at the end if it doesn't correspond to a size 8. I'll bet it will be pretty close.
i find its usually 20 lbs between sizes, maybe more like 15 when the sizes get smaller. at 150 i was a very comfortable size 10. im right under 5'7 for reference, but a lot depends on body shape/composition im sure!
It's really hard to say as not everyone fits into one size at the same height and weight. I'm 5'4, the same height as you, and I'm currently 144 and I still wear size 11. Undeniably my jeans are getting a lot looser, but I still find it kinda hard to fit into a size 9 (only certain brands I can fit into.)

I would guess that a lot of size 11 juniors jeans are similar to between a size 10 and 8 in regular jean sizes (I say this from experience- I wore 11s and loose 10s a the same time)
I love that you're thinking about goals in terms of sizes. They are much more meaningful than the number on the scale. But, just to complicate matters, sizes are SO different from brand to brand. I also wear different sizes on top and bottom.
I have a "size" in mind too... but it is a little difficult because I find a pretty big range in "sizes" when I'm shopping... especially with the trend towards "vanity" sizing... so I shoot for the lower number...
This way if I fit into something 2 sizes below my actual size, well than great... and if not, that's OK too... because I've found that sometimes cloths can be in as much as a 4 size range for me (which I think is just crazy)
Maybe I don't understand the question, because you just stated your goal is to be a size 8. So... who cares what you call your "goal weight"?
This! Just leave it open ended.
If you need a number in mind for sanity's sake, I understand that. But like Freelance said, pick a generic number like 150 or something. You will know by 160 if an 8 is about 10 lbs away if you are already in a 10. But as another poster mentioned, sizes vary so much that you may fit into an 8 at one store and not in another. I know I certainly won't be in an 8 by 150 seeing as how I'm in a 12 (and sometimes 14) now at 163.
I just changed my goal weight, I moved it from 135 to 140. I don't know if 140 is really my goal, but I'd like to be wear a size 6-8 (maybe smaller I have no idea what I'll look like that small), and be very lean. I need the ticker, stupid or not, I NEED the ticker to see how far I've come. Even if I get to 140 and end up finding I'm not satisfied and more weight comes off, that's fine.
Long (and admittedly unnecessary) story short, pick any number you want and adjust it as you find out what size you are closer to that goal.
The reason I need the number is exactly for LockitUp's reason -- I need to see it on my ticker! It seems insignificant but seeing that number at the end of the ticker helps a lot, cause then although I know my goal isn't completely solid, it gives me something solid to shoot for and keeps me motivated.

I picked the same goal weight as you did. I'm the same height. I'm not sure what the size will be at that weight or if I will choose a lower number. I needed something on my ticker, too, so I would have something to aim my efforts at. When I was (much) younger, at like 103-108, I wore a size 8/9/10 depending on the brand. It seems like I always wear a larger size at the same height/weight as other folks. Makes no sense, except I have always been curvy. The curves have just shifted to my midsection as I gained weight.
Gosh, it is so hard to say because everyone is different! At 168-171 I wear a comfortable size 8. However, my best friend is the same height and 140 in a size 10. Everyone is so different. Maybe do a clothing size ticker to give you a little motivation!
